This young lady, fresh off a stint living the "van life" has a vague concept of a plan to "build community" and will undoubtedly receive a giant chunk of taxpayer money from a city desperate for ANY kind of economic development - even the kind that will be done at public cost, will never turn a profit and will ultimately fail.

THIS kind of s.hit - not trans kids or DEI - is what real conservatives should be opposing.

Rock Island native hopes to turn former dealership building into community space

A Rock Island native is looking for community support as she attempts to polish up a hidden gem.

Madelyn Putman is working to achieve her childhood dream of purchasing the 1940s-era building at 1401 Fourth Ave. in Rock Island and turning it into a community space. The building stands out for its unique shape and sits right in front of the new Rock Island County Courthouse.

It's been home to several car dealerships over the years, but since Putman has been paying attention, it has been closed to the public.

"I would see this building sometimes as a kid, and I have wanted to own, like a bakery, cafe, restaurant, something, since I was probably about 7 or 8," the now 32-year-old said.

In her adult life, she's moved around to various places in Illinois and Iowa before spending 2021-2024 traveling full-time in her van. A car crash in November of 2024 brought her back to her parents’ home in Rock Island, she said, and had her in search of new opportunities.

In February, Putman was house-sitting up the road when she decided to take advantage of the unusually nice day and take her dog for a walk. They ended up at the building, she said, and for the first time she pushed her face against the glass.

"And that was when I realized how huge it is, because I always had just seen the front facade. I had never driven behind it, but walking around I was like, oh this place has room for so much more than just a bakery," she said. "This could be this whole little community hub, and that was where the idea started."

Built in 1940, the building was originally the home of Galbraith Motor Company, and also included a gasoline service station, according to the city of Rock Island's website. The two-story building had an auto repair/paint shop area and room for a 65-car display area on the roof.

The building changed hands a few times before it was bought by Howard P. “Cub” Buck, who owned the business until the late 1960s, according to Rock Island's website. Buck played for the Green Bay Packers from 1921-1926 and started his own automobile dealership in 1928 in Rock Island after playing and coaching football for seven years. The building was last used as a car dealership in 1991 as Austin Buick.

It had been sitting since then, which only spurred on Putman to figure out who owned the building, and how she could come up with a plan to be the next owner. She started googling and contacting the county treasurer's office until she was able to find a name and a phone number for the owner; a woman in her 90s.

After not hearing back for a few weeks, Putman decided to write a letter and leave it in her mailbox. Then a week went by. And another. And another. And after a month, she decided if it was meant to be, it would happen.

Then, it did.

A phone call from the owner's son revealed she had passed, and he was meeting soon with a real estate agent to list the building. Putman was able to plead her case and has been working with him to secure funding for the building.

The building itself is in a "pretty extreme state of dilapidation," she said, and will need everything from foundation work to insulation, along with any cosmetic updates she wants to provide to make at least part of it a cafe. For the rest of the 18,000 square foot building, Putman said, she hasn't nailed down anything specific but has a laundry list of ideas for how it can be used to serve the community.

"My goal is that I really want to create and help foster an environment where people are coming here and meeting other people. I think that people are just so starved right now for a true sense of community, and real-life connection is so hard to find, and so I would love to use the skills and experience that I have to try and help foster that for people and make a welcoming environment that people can feel safe enough to make introductions and build relationships," she said.

To help fund the building, Putman is looking into historic tax credits, TIF credits and has set up a GoFundMe account to raise money toward the project. Putman said the renovations will probably take about two years and she is hoping to secure enough funding to get started in the next six months.

Couple old couches, old pool table, foosball table with be the decor.

old farts with drink coffee on long white Sams Club tables during the day and some socially awkward home school kids will occasionally show up at night to compare yellow armpit stains on their white tshirts.

There will be a ton of soil issues on that site from all the auto/gas businesses. This will never get off the ground.
"Never" is a long time. They used to have a gas station at the "Y," right by the Fanny Bridge. That lot is now devoted to retail and office use, and it is less than 50 yards from Lake Tahoe Dam.

I just don't see how stable a non profit like that can last unless it's 1. subsidized by the city such as a recreation building of some sort or 2.) run by a religious org that can use donations for overhead costs.

I don't see how you can just make a community center without huge grants or some sort of membership.

To her point, though, there is a need for public 3rd spaces. Places where people can go that is not their home or their work and just exist. I just don't see how "I want to turn this massive building with all these huge repairs needed into a community center so people can meet other people" is a huge sell to anyone.

She wants to use her " skills and experience " that she's gleaned from living in the van to foster community relationships? Makes perfect sense.

Reminds me of the 250K Bird Sanctuary that our town just built with " free money ", kitty corner from the Feral Cat abandoned stockyards. Also the town installed another 250K worth of " pervious pavers " on a 100 yard strip of downtown, when the entire town sits in a sand bed river bottom. If a town of 900 can waste valuable resources like this, just think what goes on in real bergs through out the country...

I'm guessing that the people that built that retail/office had funds to remediate the site. The girl living in her van and hoping the city will chip into her gofundme do not.
Rule 1: Every underground storage tank will become a Leaky Underground Storage Tank (LUST) site.

Is there a gun to the city's head to give her funding? I have done a project or two like this, there is either an ROI or there isn't.
No, but the desperation in RI is insane. They just spent like $10 MILLION to tear up and rebuild every downtown street, add a pretty arched sign, new sidewalks and benches and streetscaping - all for a downtown district that is at least 75% vacant.

The plan, as near I can tell, was literally:

  • SPEND, SPEND, SPEND make it look super pretty!
  • ?
  • PROFIT!

That place would make a sick brewery, though.
Yep. The poor folks can gather together over 8.00 IPA's and hash out their other great entrepreneurial ideas. What about a dispenserary?

Seriously craft breweries have peaked and now there are more closing than opening up every year. I think Big Grove is finding this out in Omaha and KC...

As I left North Liberty this morning ( after a pickle ball blood bath ) I slowed on Penn Street as no less than 12 city employees ( likely summer help but employees no the less ) were weeding the flower beds that the city has planted in the Penn Street medians. I know a pretty median may be vital to the city but I like roads to be for driving and I'll go to a city garden to gaze at Snapdragons.

Iowa City the same. After a long fight to get Camp Cardinal built ( which will be a main arterial for years to come, only picking up more traffic every year ), they opt for one lane of traffic, a bike lane on both and 20 foot wide medians with trees planted every 30 feet, to be maintained into eternity.

That is smart traffic design and good urban planning actually.

Funny that JVW / Hogg cries about all of the excesses of IC/NL/Coralville, while he is traveling to those bastions of liberalism to freeload off of their pickleball facilities.
Unlike the waste that are dog parks, pickleball courts are filled to capacity and to avoid waiting, we start while you're still in bed. Johnson County Pickleball Association has over 700 dues paying members who have helped pay for some of the improvement to Mercer Park. God knows my county taxes don't go to roads and bridges. BTW you're the one that has to travel the brand new, yet designed like 1945 boulevards that serve to move traffic ( slowly ) around the city, then donate your tax dollars to Wright tree service to start cutting the dead trees out. Make work city programs like it's 1933. Thanks Karen Kubby...

BTW, Riverside has brand new courts that are better than IC or NL...

I like to think I pattern my writing style after Daniel Kraus, who graduated from U of I in 1997, winning a Pulitzer Prize with a 200 page novel, written in one, long run on sentence, “a stylistic tour-de-force that blends such genres as allegory, magical realism, and science fiction into a cohesive whole.” My style may be a bit over your head...

Exactly. Typical hippie libtard. I haven’t done anything with my life the last 4 years besides drive around and live out of my van. Now I think this town and random people should give me money for this pipe dream that will never work for multiple reason.
for any of this wondering. This is just part of what makes this party clueless. Torbee mentioned another thing that makes them clueless.

The remediation work to make that site approved for residential/commercial use would not be insignificant. No telling how much petroleum impacted soil they'd have to move out for disposal and then how much backfill they'd need to bring in.
