Sort of surprising to me given he is a legacy player and we have multiple infield positions opening up next year. Anyone know the scoop on this one?

With the portal I don’t think you’ll see a lot of freshman with minimal playing time hang around for year 2 at a program like this, outside of pitchers. You can go out and purchase a more proven player to fill voids.
Why not? If he’s an infielder you’d think there would be a chance for him to compete for playing time next year.
Probably going to the school that offers him the best deal.
If he just wanted to be closer to home I'm not sure why he signed here to start with. Every position on the field is open for us except RF, SS and C (if Milewski comes back). I've seen Mershon listed as IF, OF and C. That's a lot of opportunity to win a starting job somewhere if he is as good as his recruiting ranking.
One of my concerns with BOC bringing several Virginians with him, was if they get lots of playing time and still don’t pan out, how does affect the recruited high school players. Even though Mershon couldn’t break into the starting infield, and none of the Virginians were infielders, really have to think this was not all the Mershon’s idea. BOC has targeted specific top line position players from mid-majors with a couple years playing time. Mershon would probably be utility the way Sanders was. At least through next year. Guess he couldn’t wait or was asked to look elsewhere so he could go play ball.

He's not an inf. And has a weak arm. Sort of out of a position. Might hit. We shalll see wherever he ends up.

He was not a Top 200 prospect in the 2025 draft, so wasn’t going in Top 6-7 rounds. Ended up not getting drafted at all, which means he “told teams he was going to college”, of course.
Man, I REALLY hope that catcher is open even if Milewski comes back. He is not good.
I hope there is a competition as well but Milewski was very good down the stretch. He could be a 20 HR guy if he plays all next year.
Yeah but I feel many of the top teams stole at will. Throw was not close to tag many of the times. Maybe he works on this and improves because his bat woke up and not many pass balls that I recall. He could really make a jump
Everyone is looking at Milewski’s avg. Remember, he didn’t play for 2 weeks to begin the season b/c of an injured back. An injured back and raking at the plate doesn’t go together. At the end of the year, he was squaring the ball up pretty regularly. Would I take the Clemson C? Of course, but let’s not act like Milewski is a bad player; he’s not. I have no knowledge, but I doubt the coaches are treating finding a starting C as a critical need. Depth maybe, but not a starter.
Only thing I’ll say is his arm leaves room for discussion.
Wonder what the backstory is here? He was highly touted. My guess is he's fishing for dollars.

The Johnny Bench award winner has a 25% caught stealing average. Bases are stolen on pitchers and the befuddling philosophy of giving up extra bases and runs trying to steal 5 strikes at the bottom of the zone.

I posted elsewhere that he is barely over .200, strikes out A LOT, doesn't throw anyone out, and has way too many passed balls. What about any of that make him a good catcher?
He was only a few hits away from batting .250 and still provided solid power. Defensively, I think it's fair to say his back injury had a significant impact, especially early on. As the season progressed, many of those defensive issues largely disappeared. Even with them, he still graded out around league average, give or take.
If you told me before the season that our catcher would hit .250 with 13 home runs from the bottom of the lineup while providing roughly league-average defense, I’d consider that a perfectly acceptable outcome.
I think these people believe a good C throws out 90% of the runners that attempt to steal against them.
I’m ok with Milewski as our catcher next year. But you’re being kind. Every player in the world is “just a few hits away” from a better batting average. The fact is he hit .238 overall and .208 in the SEC. His power numbers were real good considering his limits at bats. But his defense was average at best (and I’m being kind here).
.208 in the sec is not close to .250 and he had a lot of passed balls. If his back was still bothering him, that would explain some of the passed balls and ineffectiveness throwing. but our catchers had a bunch of passed balls that didn't hit the ground.
I really hope that he is healthy next year and proves me wrong. But we can't go into the season with those stats being our only option. We at least need someone else young better than our two backups this past year incase his back craps out again.

As far as his defense goes I'm not making the argument that he was the best C in the league, but he was middle of the pack, and many of those issues seemed to have been early in the season when he was obviously still hurt.
He threw folks out at a higher rate than Helfrick, who is projected to be a 1st rounder.
I said I’m ok with him coming back. But you can’t sugar coat his stats this year. He also had 6 passed balls. I do think if healthy next year he should improve.

I get just looking at his SEC number, but I'd counter with the fact that in the NCAA tourney (5 games) he hit .368 with 11 RBIs, 3 bombs, and only 4 Ks.
Again, if you tell me our #7 hitter goes .240 next year w/ 13 bombs and is middle of the pack in defense, then I'm taking that all day unless you're saying we're replacing him with Danny Jackson 2.0.

Some folks act as if the guy was terrible. While he struggled early in the season, which seems to be due from his injury if you use a little bit of critical thinking, he really had an acceptable second half of the year (to me).
