The tournament starts Thursday at 3 pm! I myself will be spending a lot of time watching.

I sincerely hope that y’all can embrace these 38 days. What have you got to lose? You’ll see plays of astounding skill and athleticism. The last day of group stage, the drama is off the charts. I enjoy it. Perhaps the fact that I got nothing going on in my life at present is a factor. Who knows, who cares? (Don’t worry about me, we’re going to Greece in the fall.)

Anyway, y’all be y’all and if you hate soccer, well, we each of us got something we hate. Me: disco.

Those who can play soccer ... those who can't play american football... :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

Exactly for the insecure douches that are still stuck in puberty. This thread allows them to get it out and think they’re on to something.

What about the even-more-insecure douches who can't handle the insecure douches having their own thread to complain about something, so they have to come to the insecure douches' thread and call them names?

Hey, @LionJim ... can we get a red card on LaJollaCreek?

Love watching highest level skilled athletes with crowds that are going nuts. I'm not a big soccer fan, but I'll watch the USA games and probably some of the final knockout round games.

I figure its kind of the same thing as someone watching a whiteout game on TV when they really aren't a football fan. There is a some serious spectacle to it

Putting me, Lion Jim, in a position of authority would be the first domino that would result in the end of civilization as we know it.

It is interesting to see some of these former national players for the U.S. whine and complain about the team's performance yet they are a part of and own part of the futility of American soccer. It is not like back when Lexi Lalas or Landon Donovan played we racked up a couple World Cup championships.

No, but we had much less talented teams that played above the sum of their parts. Now, we've got more talent, a deeper player pool, and a group that hasn't accomplished much.

We were not remotely close to being an elite national soccer team when those guys played. I'm not convinced we played "above the sum of their parts". But even if we did that is a pathetic attribution to the futility and failure of the USMNT's performance for decades. We are playing above our skill level and still a totally irrelevant, weakling on the global soccer stage.

Back to the commentary, at least when you hear guys like Barkley or Shaq commenting they have the pedigree or championships or gravitas to say I was one of the best players in the world (or in Shaq's case the best of his era) to back it up. Just stop whining, the teams you played on were irrelevant in the big picture and so were you.

The 1994 team was made up of a bunch of college kids with a couple of Euro guys mixed in that played at mid/smaller clubs. They advanced to the Round of 16 while beating a tournament favorite in Colombia, and playing pretty even with Brazil. On paper, they had much less talent than the teams we played. They punched way above their weight that summer.

The 2002 team was pretty MLS heavy with other guys playing at smaller clubs in Europe. Again, not close to being a top 8 team in the world, yet we advanced to the Quarters. Landon was also part of a team that regularly dominated Mexico (and CONCACAF) even though Mexico probably had the strong team on paper...and also made the finals of a CONFED Cup beating a much better Spain team.

We're certainly not "totally irrelevant"...we've been one of the top 2 teams in our region for a generation (and for a while, were the top dog), and are something like the 15th-25th best team in the world. Lalas and Landon were a big part of laying the soccer foundation in this country...I'm glad they are still invested and want to see us keep moving forward. I mean, are the only former players that are allowed to criticize anything about Penn State football those guys on the 1982 and 1986 teams?

Those players from '82 and '86 and anyone on this message board. We've got accomplishments too. 😟

You know a lot more than I do about the USMNT and the history. Maybe totally irrelevant is unfair but with the resources we have we should be further along on the global soccer continuum than we are. Yeah those guys can criticize but let's be clear they never got close to winning a World Cup. Yep there are excuses why they didn't but the fact is they did not get that close. I define final 4 as getting close maybe final 8 but not round of 16.

I for one will anxiously watching for a 0-0 game after 120 minutes of play being settled by penalty kicks after the overtime periods -- unless some paint is drying somewhere in which case I will watch that instead. Sorry, I have to go with the event that has more action. Drying paint is the ****!!!

So you're saying that the US "never got close to winning a World Cup", and you define getting close as "I define final 4 as getting close maybe final 8"?

Wouldn't that mean that when we got to the Final 8, we were close? (or at least pretty close)

Ah, the great philosophical mind of Al Bundy. Never wrong!
Reminds me of the time I was at lunch with some of my co-workers. One of them who had recently become a big soccer fan said he watched a great show the night before: the 10 greatest goals in World Cup history. I replied by asking if it wasn’t the only 10 goals in World Cup history.
Waitress:”would you like a table out in the bar so you and your family can watch the soccer match?” Al Bundy: “ No thanks. I only watch sports where something happens!”

But would you rather watch your children or grandchildren play soccer or tee ball? Coached both and there isn't even a close comparison!
