With the Big 12 and national college football landscapes hanging in the balance, Texas Tech can't afford to take a chance on playing Sorsby

The article may be over the top in predicting major fallout if Sorsby plays, but at least the conference is taking a stand.

"The Big 12's athletic directors have drawn a line in the west Texas sand: the Red Raiders must pull their support of Sorsby, even after a Lubbock judge granted him a temporary injunction against the NCAA to play this season, despite his admission that he bet on the sport dozens of times.

Theoretically, the Big 12 can force Tech's hand with threats (though no one is seriously considering invoking a bylaw to kick Tech out of the league), and Yormark will consider his options after speaking to the league's presidents Thursday, but the onus is on Tech. Nothing is stopping the Red Raiders from ending this debacle by showing Sorsby the door."

This feels like yet another lawsuit with Sorsby suing the Big 12 for tortious interference

I agree. When I read yesterday the Big 12 could step in, I figured Sosby's attorneys would get the conference added to the lawsuit and have the injunction broadened to include them.

Im not up to speed on Texas Civil Procedure, but there has to be a way to seek an expedited appeal of the preliminary injunction. And I dont want to hear about the TT grads on the appellate court; even if they are more loyal to their school than to the law, they have to see how this is hurting their school.

I wonder if part of his NIL package is him getting paid to tell boosters what he is betting on so they can take the other side? It's basically an infinite NIL hack. Give him $100k a week, he bets it all, boosters take the other side of his bets with 10 times the wager size, and then they use the winnings to fund NIL to him and other players.

The only way for him not to play is for tech to drop him. I'm assuming a billionaire funded him and the university isn't likely looking to piss off that booster. Like others stated he likely has a decent lawsuit if he is dropped.

A decent lawsuit IN THAT COURT WITH THAT JUDGE. Nobody thinks he really has any case at all, much less a good one.

Cody Campbell is his name, and he isnt just a billionaire booster; he is the Chair of the Board of Regents. I dont know the whole power structure, but its not just that they dont want to piss him off...he may be the ultimate decision maker.

From what Ive read about Campbell, he thinks he can save college sports by exploiting these weaknesses until a major change comes along. Or something like that.

He is also putting money behind the "Save College Sports Act", so he legitimately wants to fix some of this nonsense.

But I dont know what happens if the coach and AD think its a good idea to drop Sorsby and Campbell disagrees.

The thing about Judge Ken Curry is that he has no real ties to Texas Tech. He doesnt live in Lubbock. He doesnt even have to worry about being re-elected, because he is retired. His decision may be wrong, but its hard to claim bias as the reason.

The original judge in the case, Philip Hays, recused himself to avoid the appearance of impropriety. Hays is a Lubbock native who attended Texas Tech for both undergrad and Law School. So, the case was assigned to Curry as a visiting judge.

Judge Curry attended UT-Arlington and got his law degree from Houston. He was a Judge in Fort Worth for 20 years before retiring in 2012. He still serves as a visiting Judge as needed in Fort Worth.

While his decision to grant the Injunction seems really bad, im not going to read the 512 page motion filed by Sorsby, or the NCAA response. I dont even know if the hearing transcripts are available.

Without reading all of that material, it is difficult to point out the legal flaws in his order.

If TT did that wouldn't Sorsby just take that to court as well? Apparently players can do whatever they want as long as they have a judge on their side.

Seems we should skip the middle man and just have the judicial system write out the enforcable rules for college athletics. They could probably write them on a post it note.

When i read that a billionaire is supporting a movement to "save" it, I always think of the Family Guy episode where Carter supports the Tea Party.

Judges have to be on the players side. The players are always going to be the victims in the free money free for all that is college athletics.

Is it really their fault that the ridiculously wealthy and ridiculously dumb are throwing money at them?

it's interesting that you have at least 2 camps here, one that is saying this is unsustainable and that their is a bubble that will burst and another that says that it's just the tip of the iceberg and we will have more of the wild, wild west. I'm hoping for your scenario where we return to some semblance of amateur athletics.

Seems like to me they are a couple of years late to the party. These allegations surfaced in August 2024 and yet he played for two years at CincinnatI.
