If Tavion Banks returns in 2026-27, we would have 0 Open Roster Spots (14 players are officially signed)

Keep checking on Banks for workouts, visits, NCAA litigation concerning the Waiver request, and anything else. There is just no news at all concerning him, other than what's been discussed previously. Maybe something definitive will turn up.

Keep waiting also, but beginning to think the ship has sailed, unfortunately.

No news is probably bad news

Oh good.

The NCAA will get right on that.

I hope all those NCAA staff members are not too busy to make this simple ruling.

God knows all the intense work and busy important stuff they have to deal with every hour of every day.

All that highly paid diligent intelligent professionals and their important jobs coming into work each day and working their asses off. This is in good hands.

They must be busy with the gambling scandal

Offseason Update

Updated May 2, 2026
Banks simultaneously declared for the 2026 NBA Draft and entered the transfer portal on April 15, saying he wants to "explore all options." His preferred path is returning to Iowa for a fifth year of eligibility — a realistic scenario since two of his prior seasons were at the junior college level. A ruling on that eligibility was pending as of late April. If granted the extra year, Banks would be a major returning piece for an Iowa team that loses Stirtz to the draft. If not, his 44.2% three-point shooting and 52% overall mark give him professional options overseas.

I was under the impression he never even applied/tried to get a 5th year

The entire process is ambiguous. There's a list of players who have applied, based on the litigation tracker, but many cases are not listed there because state court procedures are difficult to obtain due to high fees and limited access. It sounds as though he actually did apply for the waiver at some point. Maybe we'll get more clarity at some point. I imagine that the dockets are jam-packed.

Here's a quote from the tracker site.

"A recent trend has shifted many college sports lawsuits to state court, where tracking capabilities are limited. Unlike the federal courts, which have one universal system, state courts tend to vary wildly in the accessibility of their dockets, and many either have high access fees or are completely inaccesible online. As a result, this site reflects a good-faith effort rather than a complete database."

So a Cook County judge issued a decision today that allows a 6th year for the NW football center after the NCAA had ruled against him.

These local courts are overturning NCAA decisions all over
If banks wants to play, and Ben wants him, they can get it done.
Go local hawks!

That's major IMO. County Courts moving along with State and Federal? Why not go for it? Why not?

There’s no reason for that to happen. You should try to educate yourself on how to treat human beings and team members.

That sends a totally wrong message to everyone if Ben cuts a player at this point, especially his son. Why would anyone believe Ben in the future if he cuts his son at this point in the process. If he has zero loyalty to his son, he will have even less to other people. We are beyond the cutting point and that's why there's still an open spot left. It's for one person to fill at the end. My guess is they're waiting on Banks and if that doesn't happen then he'll grab someone who's still looking for a home.

Peyton would be screwed and you're an idiot for thinking that Peyton would be happy for his Dad. If Ben were to have talks with Peyton during or right after the season, that's one thing, to do it now would ruin their relationship.

You really don't understand people very well. I guess that's why you tend to fight with other posters and actually think Peyton would be happy for his Dad to cut him.
So, am I understanding correctly that Cam and Kael may have an extra year, with 5 for 5?

Guess that means the Hawks are done pursuing Daughtry, Davis, etc. No way Ben would Crean Peyton, Joey, or Jacob 🤣

Jacob Koch doesn’t count against the roster limit.

Not that I know of. Appears he's still waiting for a court decision. No recent information yet. Some are holding their breath while others are thinking it's over for his return.
lots of truth there, especially on this boad!
