Latest on MLB ambitions for the Triangle

You can puff your chest out as much as you like, but if Raleigh doesn't get a team, one of the big reasons will be its lack of a dense urban core. The Triangle is a fast growing area, but that growth is still very spread out. The whole "lots of population within an hour drive" thing matters a whole lot less than "population within a short subway ride." Every city you mentioned except Charlotte has a subway system. Dense urban development matters to baseball.
I don't know. I think the culture of the area has something to do with it. Sure there's not a great regional transit system, so people are used to getting in their cars and travelling 30 minutes or more to amenities around the Triangle, same as Atlanta or any other spread out area. Not all those folks that fill the Lenny for hockey are from downtown Raleigh.

Fair point. That said, 42 home NHL games is a lot fewer than 81 home MLB games, and 17.6k average attendance for NHL games is a lot fewer than 29.5k average attendance for MLB games. MLB is a whole other level than NHL.

yeah i'd still stick with Braves after 40 years. there is a massive, massive Braves base in NC. a Braves game in Raleigh would be 80% Braves fans. most Braves road games are 50% Braves fans. i went to the D-backs/Braves in Phoenix this year and there were easily more Braves fans than AZ fans. regarding national fanbases, the Cowboys/Panthers game this past fall in Charlotte was 75% Cowboys fans.

there are so many braves/yankees/phillies/mets fans here already that it will take a generation to make a Raleigh stadium become filled with Raleigh fans.

I mean that’s what the article is about though. The guy who wants to own the franchise is betting on the region continuing to grow

Raleigh and Charlotte went head to head for an MLS team, but Charlotte had a billionaire backer (Tepper) and Raleigh didn't, so CLT got the team. We could be seeing the reverse here.

Re: NC being Braves territory: I can remember when everyone in NC was either a Cowboys or Redskins fan, but the Panthers are now pretty beloved in the state. An MLB team in NC would be adopted quickly and passionately.

Raleigh's biggest problem is that it doesn't have a dense urban core, so an MLB team here would be reliant on lots of people driving 20+ miles to games. That's fine on weekends, but there would be a lot of empty seats during weekday games. Any decision to bring MLB to Raleigh is based on the hope that there will be a lot of urban in-fill over the next 20 years, I would think.
Nah the new meta for pro teams is to build spectacular new stadiums + entertainment districts in the burbs. The philosophy is ‘if you built it, they will come’. The Braves are making money hand over fist on their out of town campus. A stadium + bars/restaurants/entertainment situated equidistant from Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill would likely draw considerable numbers.

All good points, and I doubt a Raleigh MLB team would average the league average in attendance unless they were winning a lot. However, with baseball there is a lot less local competition for sports fan's time and money from April through August than there is for the Canes from October through March.

It's a fair point, but you're also talking about one of the most established and historic franchises in MLB, in a market that's three times the size of Raleigh. If MLB comes to Raleigh, they're not going to build the stadium in Cary, they're going to build it in downtown Raleigh or near the Lenovo Center.

The energy for the Panthers playoff game and Hornets late season stretch are comparable to what I've seen for the Canes FWIW
Raleigh supports 1 pro team and has still only had strong attendance while they've been clearly one of the best teams in the league.

When the Panthers are good the stadium and city are buzzing, unfortunately the Panthers have just been bad for 10 years. The Rams playoff game last year was one of the loudest stadiums I've ever been at.

Same for the Hornets except they've been bad for 20 years - they were 6 games over .500 last season and came in 9th in the conference and by the second half of the season even weeknight games were packed.

Raleigh is also half the size of Charlotte which seems important in general to support an 81 game home season.

Yeah Charlotte’s lack of pro culture stems from both franchises being relatively young + no sustained consistent success.

If the Hornets or Panthers start winning, they’ll develop a winning culture with rabid fan support. Similar to what has happened with the Hurricanes.

I know there are different ways to measure this, but any measurement that has Charlotte as twice as big as Raleigh is a bit flawed. Charlotte is more densely populated and the Triangle is more spread out. But if you start talking like 25, 50 mile radius from city center, I think the two markets are about the same size.

Charlotte’s CSA is about 3.5 million, Raleigh’s is 2.5 million. So not quite double for Charlotte but a decent gap.

Yeah, in 2025 it was 3.5 million for Charlotte and 2.5 million for Raleigh.

In 2020, it was 3.2 million for Charlotte and 2.2 million for Raleigh.

So Raleigh grew about 11% in that 5-year time period, while Charlotte grew about 9%. Both high growth areas with Raleigh growing a little faster.

Another way to look at it is that Charlotte is the 19th biggest CSA in the country and Raleigh is the 30th biggest.

But Charlotte is not part of North Carolina in my mind
Well I like Lake Norman

If you stick to metro statistical areas (a smaller geographical area), Charlotte's is surprisingly about twice that of Raleigh: 2.95 million vs 1.6 million. If you use combined statistical areas, which are a better measure, it's 3.5 mil vs. 2.5 mil. Raleigh still has a lot of catch up to do to get to Charlotte's size.

By comparison, the Nashville MSA is 2.2 mil, and its CSA is 2.5 mil. So Nashville is smaller than Charlotte no matter how you measure, it has a more concentrated urban core than Raleigh, and it's the same size as Raleigh if you count the surrounding areas.

This is still gonna come down to the battle of billionaires, though, imo.

The MSA numbers are misleading for Raleigh because Durham isn’t included for some reason even though they share borders.

Charlotte is the bane of my existence. If Charlotte has no haters, I’ve passed.
Tried the therapist, she hated Charlotte too. What can a man do?

Any who, here’s a link to educate yourselves as to why Raleigh is the choice.

I'm all for Raleigh getting an MLB team. Would be a dream come true. But mlbraleigh.com isn't affiliated with Dundon or the new guy wanting to bring MLB to Raleigh. They've been pushing MLB to Raleigh for over a decade, but they're just a group of fans. They don't have any pull.

That said, Charlotte is a great city. Grew up there. Couldn't have asked for a better upbringing in terms of community and city. If something as innocuous as Charlotte is the bane of your existence, then you've lived a charmed life.

Which is why Carolina North is the perfect place and we can build the basketball arena at Odum Village. 🤪

If they do come, hoping it’s designated as an American League team. Braves will always be first in my heart but I can get down with having a favorite AL team.
Same. I've been die hard Braves fan since seeing my first game as a kid at the old launching pad with Hammerin Hank. Got my gorgeous red-brimmed cap too. Lived and died with the calls of Skip, Ernie and Pete on TBS and then through the golden years of Maddux, Smoltz, Glavine, Avery. I couldn't change my allegiance now, but I could sure get 100% behind a new AL team.
