First off, thank you to our new hosts for taking us poor Midwest vagrants in to their home turf. Now, I figure this would be a good place to get some input on Savannah vs Charleston. What I mean by that is, from what I know they are similar cities as far as history and culture go. If I’m way off please correct me. I’ve been to Savannah and absolutely loved it. The history, the culture, and the food! I only got to spend 4 days in Savannah so a return trip is on the docket, but I’m wondering if we should check out Charleston before we go back. Let’s hear your recommendations you hospitable southern fvcks!

You should definitely check it out. You could also hit up Beaufort which is located in between, although a good bit smaller, but very beautiful. Savannah is located more inland than Charleston. Charleston is a peninsula city between two rivers and you can see out into the harbor from all over town.

I visited both last summer. We stayed at a resort in Beaufort, though, which is near Charleston. Did a tour of Fort Sumter. I would have enjoyed it more if it weren’t well above one hundred.

Both have an antebellum feel to them, but definitely more so Savannah. I like Savannah a lot. The river walk is great. We stayed in a hotel with a rooftop pool that overlooked the river.

You can’t go wrong with either one.

Here are a few pics from last summer that don’t include myself and girlfriend:

Btw, it’s only a couple hour drive between Charleston and Savannah. If you got the time, do both. Both cities are great.

As a native South Carolinian, I love both but prefer Charleston. The beaches are closer and I like the small town feel of Folly Beach and used to rent an Airbnb there every year for a week during the summer. Also love the King Street commercial district and the history.

If you love partying, Savannah might be more your thing. They have one of the biggest St Patricks Day celebrations in the country and it's also hopping during other big holiday weekends.

But you can't go wrong with either.

We rented a condo on Folly Beach in 2023. Absolutely amazing place.

I go to both frequently. Family in Charleston, go to tournaments in Savannah.

Charleston much more family friendly, Savannah better for partying with open container allowed (grab a beer for the walk to dinner, get a to go pint, etc)

Probably do prefer Charleston but always have a great time in Savannah

I've been to both several times. Prefer Charleston.

Savannah seemed a bit too touristy to me. And a little bit more lowbrow in terms of trying to hawk goods down on the river. Stayed at a really nice hotel that I can't find any more.

The downtown is rich in history, architecturally gorgeous, and filled with great restaurants and bars. Great views of the Charleston harbor from many downtown locations.
Three excellent beaches in metro Charleston - Isle of Palms, Sullivan Island and Folly Beach, all less than one hour from downtown Charleston, all with their own unique culinary and party scenes. And some great side attractions, like Shem Creek, just across the bridge, party central for Charleston suburbanites, and where dolphins hang out.

Savannah is a nice place but it really doesn’t compare.

Savannah. I lived there for 3 years. They say Charleston is the grown up sister of Savannah.

Personally prefer Savannah but have spent more time in Charleston. Charleston is very small. The historic area feels like a few blocks. I typically like coastal cities but am not a fan of the beaches or ocean around Charleston. Never went to those near Savannah, but can’t imagine they are much worse.

Just seems like there is more to do in Savannah each time I’ve gone. Whereas Charleston is one low-lit, white tablecloth, overpriced greasy restaurant after another.

Daniel island, mount pleasant are nice little areas but there really isn’t much to do IMO.

Been to both, really enjoyed both.

Savannah felt like there was more to do, but Charleston felt a little classier.

Loved the ability to walk around with a beverage in Savannah and think Charleston would benefit from that as well - but the side walks in Charleston are so bad people would be falling all over the place if they were drinking and walking.

There's really very little to compare other than the surface. Both are old and historic Southern towns with horrific pasts.

Savannah is and always will be Charleston's little sister- less history, less culture, less diversity, and less class.

Savannah doesn't even have beaches.

Charleston is prettier, is an actual foodie town, and is significantly better in every metric.

Savannah is looser on laws for partying, and the river walk is fun if not trashy. Nowhere in Charleston would be that trashy.

Savannah has SCAD at least, so it's more open to other cultures and ways of thinking, which I appreciate alot. Charleston can be basic and backwards, and I hate that aspect alot (as a current citizen and a Charlestonian born and raised), but its gorgeous, polite, has incredible food, things to do, history, and culture that sets it massively apart.

Comparing Charleston to Savannah is really not even a 1:1 tbh.

Absolutely you should check Charleston out! Condé Nast’s #1 city in the world for like the past 32 years in a row. Charleston diarrhea shats on every other place on the planet. You should totally move there!

The only thing Savannah does better than Charleston is the public consumption of alcohol. But that’s easily ruined there, and easily overcome by all the other advantages in Chuck Town.

Let me warn you though, don’t ever visit the upstate of SC, don’t even drive through. Take the long way around, those ******** up there will kill ya for driving too slow on the road.

Gotcha. The beach factor is irrelevant to me as I live in a beach town in Florida, but if I didn’t that would def weigh in favor of Charleston. Might have to squeeze in a trip up there late summer early fall and report my findings. @McLovin32 will just have to wait for csb part 2 on this one😎

Ok, so as a native Charlestonian born and raised, dudes like this would be the reason not to come. "Diarrhea shats" this dude is as much a tourist in Charleston as anyone out of state jfc

Got it. Both great places. Gotta give Charleston the edge, even without the beaches. Lived there for quite awhile, miss it.

I mean, closest is tybee which is almost 20 miles from Downtown Savannah. Downtown Charleston is a much more sprawling metro (with many of its neighborhoods being literally on the beach) with Folly being 10 miles away and Sullivan's being 9 miles away.

Further, Charleston is surrounded by the intracoastal and water is everywhere, where Savannah has a "river."

Not true. The marshes are beautiful. The harbor smells like salt.

I mean, I said I prefer Charleston but Tybee is the beach in Savannah. IOP/Sullivans/Folly are still not downtown or anything just like Tybee.
