What formation are you using? Balogun and Pepi won't be on the field together unless they are trailing in a knockout stage match.

Poch ran the same 3-4-2-1 formation today that he's been using for awhile now, so I have it like this:

GK: Freese
CB: Freeman, Ream, McKenzie (until Richards is back)
WB: Dest & Robinson
CDM: Adams & McKinnie
AM: Pulisic & TBD btw Tillman, Aaronson & Reyna
Striker: Balogun
  • Ream being named Captain means he's starting every game which is crazy and an indictment on how bad our CBs are other than Richards. Freeman immediately moving to starting CB when he's a RB also says a lot.
  • Richards from my understanding is going to miss at least 1-2 games in the group stage. There's a chance that he could miss the entire group stage.
  • If McKinnie is starting across from Pulisic as an attacking mid, then you're stuck with Roldan or Berhalter as the other starting CDM. This is where excluding Aiden Morris for Zendajas or Arfsten is going to bite them.
Who are you using in a 3-4-2-1?
Surprised that Poch is putting his WC starting lineup out there for this friendly but I pretty much had it all in this post.

Why is M Robinson starting over McKenzie and Trusty? Why???????????????????

And Ream again, Ugh.....

I like Weah over Tillman but Tillman has played well for Poch

The center backs are already getting exposed since Germany is a quality team and Freese hasn't looked great thus far. I've been beating these points home for awhile now. This is why they will not advance deep into the tournament.

Not Freese’s fault on goal- was bad defense on set piece

Why are we playing 4 back when our best success under Poch, including first half vs Senegal, was a 3 back formation?

Take away set piece goal and teams look about even after 34 min which is impressive as Germany is loaded with talent

Well I wouldn’t say hate but irritated if it being such a big deal All the time with everything and pushed in our faces in spirits and almost all TV shows nowadays
Hopefully, we reach a point where everyone is accepting of each other and people's lifestyle choices are an afterthought. But as long as people "hate" the team for supporting a group of Americans that are ridiculed/judged/hated, (or feel the need to call the jerseys "ghay") then we aren't there yet.

I'm talking about the whole game up to that point. His positioning had not been great.
It would have been a really good read to get off his line and stop that goal...tough play. But we'll need really good goalkeeping if we're to make any noise.

I’m with you. I respect everyone and don’t like our jersey as I don’t think it’s needed but I wouldn’t call it ghay. It’s not that important to me but I like keeping politics out of sport.

And Dest. But he and Jedi spend a lot of their time forward, so you could really call it either a back 5 or back 3, but it's what we've been playing.
Jedi has not been forward as much as in the past, I still think he's not totally in form yet.

Dest though is definitely in some of the best form I can remember. He's becoming an issue for defenses.

Our speed is bothering Germany a bit

Weah, Aronson will add to that next half I’m sure

Really good showing...came out on the back foot, but really found our game and were the more dangerous team for long stretches. Now, put everyone in bubble wrap and bring out the subs.

I'm very stressed now watching this 2nd half with the lack of subs. Maybe it'll be the 60th minute, so please get us through 10 more minutes.

We will look better with Richards over M Robinson if he’s fit

We look on par with Germany which is really
Impressive. but it’s a friendly

Great news for USA... Richards was a full participant at practice today for the first time. I know Poch is worried about match fitness but I think there is no choice here. You have to start him and worse-case you sub him at HT or sometime 2H if he's tired. But we don't want to get in the hole vs. Paraguay which will have a large fanbase in LA (again, stupid decision by US Soccer to put the game there (yes, we control where we as hosts play!) so close to South America. Complete idiots!

The entire scheduling makes no sense. Would have been smarter to put us in Arrowhead. If anything for the start times. A 10pm est time start on a Thursday night for a domestic tournament game is ludicrous. I get the desire for maximized exposure but besides the Juneteenth game - which still makes no sense to have a noon game in the CA heat - start times are horrible. How are kids going to watch….not that fifas shown they actually care about soccer with this tournament.

More than half the country is already done with school. The Northeast is probably the largest area still in school. Teachers will put the games on if they can stream them since many will be in their last week to week and half when the WC starts.

Playing 2 games in LA is lunacy. Playing 1 in Seattle may be on as US gets good fan support there but I think it’s vs austrailia so west coast helps their fans

KC, Columbus, Minny, Cincy, Nashville - all better choices for US support and less for the opponent

I just hope US fans turnout and we need the support

It's an odd group in the back right now...Richards is playing great and had a great season, but isn't 100% and will likely be lacking a bit of fitness. I like Freeman, but he's not a natural CB. He is composed on the ball and a good distributor, but still not sure how good he is at defending world class attacking players (especially ones that are more physical and bring some size). Ream has lost a half step...I still like him defending in tight spaces, but we're playing to his weaknesses by letting Jedi get well upfield and forcing Ream to defend out in space as things get stretched.

Poch loves the 3 CB formation, but it really exposes us in a position that currently has a limited player pool. If I were coaching this team, I'd be playing a 4 man back and asking Jedi and Dest to really pick their spots when they get forward, playing a bit more defensive minded, either a 4-2-3-1 or even a 4-4-2 and going with both Balogun and Pepi up top ( at least in spots)...then again, I'd be playing Pulisic more centrally in the attack, which might be a mistake since he thrived out wide on Sunday. Water under the bridge at this point though, as the roster selection tells you we're all in on the 3-4-3 (or 3-4-2-1 or 5-2-2-1 or whatever we want to call it).
Can't play having Dest hesitant to go forward, he is the key to the offense.

It’s tough though, because getting them forward leaves Ream and Freeman on an island to defend 1v1 in space, and it’s not their strength. Ream will get eaten alive if we’re pushing forward hard against a top team.
