I love it. Hopefully someone is in Wilkins’ ear about it. He was overlooked out of HS until Furman’s coach saw what he is and placed the ball into a true frosh’s hands and said, “lead us” and it resulted in a competitive first round loss to UConn. Hope he is working hard to prove the doubters wrong. Of course, when UK and Bama pursue you in the portal, confidence should exist.

Anyone thinking this team is Momcilovic, Moreno and a bunch of role players should go watch that UConn tape when the Huskies couldn't stop this kid

This is dumb as heck. Wilkins (IMO) is our 2nd best transfer outside of Mom. I like Wilkins better than Zoom as the guy with the ball in his hands and kinda hope Mark Pope lets him play lead guard most offensive sets.

I don't agree with that. Wilkins is very turnover prone. 3.8 TO/Gm is a lot. He had 11 in one game! 5+ in 10 games. Diallo had 6 a couple games, but was playing a full B10 schedule too.

Yeah there's no way he should be ranked 521. I hope he sees that and it puts a fire in him!! On3 had him ranked 29th in the Portal. Against UCONN, He had 21 points, 4 assists, and hit 4 of 8 from three. Yes he turned the ball over a lot last year but he will be playing the 2 this year at UK so won't have the ball in his hands as much so I really believe he will have a lot less turnovers this year. He's a great addition to our team.

In his final game at Furman, Wilkins put up 21 on over 50% shooting against UConn.

I get that strength of competition is always a factor with any attempt at objectively analyzing a player (or any aspect of the game). OTOH, it's not the players' fault if he had few opportunities against higher level competition. And at a certain point, whatever math is being used in this type of thing can go haywire. Like the SRS rating Basketball Reference uses that gives a higher rating to the 24-25 UK team than the 77-78 30-2 National Championship team. Yeah, UK played a really tough schedule in 24-25, but sorry, whatever math you're using there is just clearly wrong.

This feels like something along those lines. Wilkins might not turn out to be a great player, but there's no way a freshman who averaged nearly 18 a game on relatively efficient numbers (meaning not just a chucker) on an NCAA Tournament team is the 521st best transfer.

The linked article quotes Evan Miya as saying even he thinks Wilkins will be much better than that, but the low ranking was due to high number turnovers during last season.

Miya states he thinks those TO numbers should be much lower with Wilkins not being relied on to do as much for this UK team.

Too bad we can't have jerseys with triple digit numbers... ( I suppose?)

Otherwise, I'd be cool with giving him jersey # 521.....

Yeeeeeeeaaaahhhhhhh baby !

Let him own it !

Almost comical you can put Wilkins at 521, but players like Jasper are near the top 100…
I’d be willing to wager a decent amount Jasper could put up those numbers on the 4th best team in the 23rd ranked conference in the country. Save me the UConn stuff. It’s a one off. He very well could be good. He could also be completely overwhelmed and suck or just be meh. The Southland or whatever little conference Furman is in is a HUGE jump to the SEC and the UK schedule. Wilkins is going to have to take a massive leap forward.

Eagles Ball you can go watch Oregon. Jasper wouldn't do **** even against crappy teams. There was a reason why Jasper turned the ball over whenever he got in the game and a guy like Wilkins' team made the NCAA tournament. You wanna bet who has better season next year since their both sophmores at big programs? Your Jasper's uncle aren't you? I was wondering who on this board was it.

A word of caution apart from those who think any signee for UK can below top fifty And even those will be the scrubs. I certainly think he is above 521 but will wait to claim he will be our second best player/scorer.

Should they also watch the tapes where he scored single digits against teams in the bottom of his bad conference? There are more than one of those. 🤷🏻‍♂️
Sure watch them all. The last game of the season in the NCAAT against UConn bodes pretty damn well for his jump next season. Meanwhile, you continue to show your hate for all things Kentucky Basketball

I’m not personally too sure about this. Jasper had his issues in SEC play for sure, but his numbers in the games we played against low level competition actually wouldn’t be that far off from what Wilkins was doing once you account for him still only getting around 20 minutes in most of those games while Wilkins averaged 30 on the year.

It’s also not like Furman was a juggernaut in their conference. They stole a tournament bid with their conference tournament run, but finished the regular season tied for 5th with a 10-8 record in league play and finished the year at #184 in KenPom even after the conference tournament and the better than expected showing against UConn.

None of that is to necessarily say that Wilkins actually sucks or anything. Just cautioning against making evaluations based on one game samples. His overall profile was quite a bit more mixed than the UConn game would indicate.

Jasper literally couldn’t dribble or bring the ball up the court against Iowa St. he’s awful.

Here’s the honest truth: Nobody on this board really knows how good or bad Wilkins is. There’s three full games available to the public from Furman last year that I could find. Only two of those were against real competition, and one of those was even in an exhibition.

What we saw in the UConn first half is encouraging for those who want to focus on his extremely high ceiling, where he has an NBA-potential skillset….but he also may have one of the lower floors of anyone in our rotation. We hope we see him rise closer to the ceiling than his floor. That’s all we can do is hope. Unless some of you have a Synergy account (I don’t.)

!! Still just shows how someone who is as respected in that analytics world can make a model that clearly doesn’t incorporate eye test lol
Interesting too bc I’m pretty sure I saw where UK works with Miya to do data modeling of some kind, clearly they’re not afraid to deviate from his advice/findings

UConn was after him too, which I see as a pretty good sign after they got a front row look at him in Rnd 1.

Hopefully this is a case where they slid Miya some cash and said “throw everyone off our trail so we can get him” lol

Rupp Arena begins to rumble ...... " Starting at guard .... # five HUNDRED twentyyyyyyyyy oooooooooooone ! Mr. Alex Wilkins !!!

** crowd goes nuts**

bring it on and don't let 'em forget about it !

Go Big Blue ! ( I like how that sounds... we should lobby to give him jersey #521. To my limited knowledge, there is no #521 ever in Kentucky basketball history )

PS - If we can pay them, we can number them whatever, right ? I'd love to have a guy that could foul for us so Joe Lindsay can stand there counting on his fingers and toes until he could sign #7,897,923,018,115,693 for a foul !

what can I say, I am a glutton for punishment
