Happy 6-4 Day

That is a weird connection between a game score and today's date. I always think of 6-4, June 4th, and the start of the Battle of Midway which really put Japan on the spiral of defeat. I also think of all those Navy sailors and officers who died in that battle and in the Pacific in WW2, two of them were my uncles who died 8 years before I was born.
My apologies for the outrage I caused you on this IOWA football forum.
I wasnt outraged. I have been a big time hawk fan since I watched a couple of games in the late 1950's, one being the 2nd rose bowl game, another was ohio st vs Iowa on close circuit TV at KRNT theater in Des Moines about 1960 or earlier. I just thought June 4th 6-4 was a long leap to the score of that game.
i watched the movie enactment of battle of midway during a visit to the USS Midway. it was very poignant… but the 6-4 battle in state college is not an inappropriate reference here
Terrible sh*t has happened every date ever, no one thing lays claim to a certain date. But I think you know that and have just chosen to post about this for one reason or another. Anyway, what a beautifully terrible game that was.
I've always liked low-scoring, defensive football games but that one took it to the extreme. Emotional with Kirk's dad having died. Watched it with a buddy/Hawk fan at a bar, Sedgwick's in Lincoln Park (which is no more).
Also, the US Navy's victory at Midway was a long shot against a superior force, early in the war when we were backing up on our heels. A gambler may have taken the US with plenty of points, but a decisive victory was almost a miracle. A lot of brave American sailors and aircrews died, and we owe them (and their families) for their sacrifice.
After all, our all-time football captain is a navy aviator named Kinnick. We even named the stadium after him.

Look at Kirk jogging across the field to shake hands with Paterno while Old Joe barely made it past the numbers.
People like to ***** about this game but I've always thought it was a landmark in Kirk's coaching career. It showed the world that Iowa was going to be about winning ugly. 24 years later and nothing has changed. Outstanding defense, strong special teams, and just enough offense to not give the game away. It won't win us a National Championship, but it will land Kirk in the Hall of Fame.
24 years and nothing has changed? A lot has changed just not for Iowa football, especially offensively. You are right about one thing, Iowa will not win a NC with Kirk. BTW, what is Kirk's biggest win, something we can put in his hall of fame plaque? Orange Bowl?
Iowa's defense was really good but dang, Penn State's offense was pretty pathetic.
