Great update on the teams and the players on said teams. I think SHU can finish last or much higher than this guy predicts. Just too many unknowns with the roster at this point. Until the dust settles and we actually see them play a bunch of games we will have a better feel as to how the BE season will go.

And the games we played without Hines when he had a concussion?
We beat prov without him and got smoked by nova when he did play. You’re comparing a bench player to a 1st league all BE, 2nd team all BE, and a player who made the BE Rookie team. Hines didn’t accomplish any of that

We were fortunate last year on the injury front. Those other teams and examples (didn’t USC’s leading scorer miss time too when we played them?), and outside of Hines, no one missed any time. Obviously Godswill, Suemnick and Felton missed major time, but I don’t remember a SHU team in recent memory that avoided the injury bug with rotation players.

I don’t think we will be picked near the bottom based on last year. The roster has promise. And I say that as a non-Kool Aid drinker.

I do agree with the top 3 but after that it’s a crap shoot.

Nobody can tell how good any of the other teams and players are. Most of the transfers are stepping up in competition. All will need to be coached up individually and massaged into a team.

That may be true. However you can look at the rosters of all the BE teams and evaluate the players based on their pedigree and past performance and come up with an educated guess. Of course that needs to factor in the coach and his staff and what they can do with the kids on the roster and how well they fit into the coaches plans.

It will be a good sign for the BE if the team that wins the regular season title has 4-5 losses. That most likely means the depth is back to where it should be.

SJU has gone 36-4 over the last two regular seasons. And UConn/SJU combined for 36-4 last year in the league. Not supposed to happen.

Actually it would only be a good sign if the BE was elevated as a conference in terms of overall performance. If the top teams like UConn and St Johns take steps backward and there is more parity that is fine but if the conference as a whole continues to regress against top outside competition then that is not good. Depth and quality of teams go hand in hand.

Way too early predictions before any team has even had a practice together can be a crapshoot. But there is enough to form a general opinion on how teams compare to each other.

1- Who is returning? How many overall minutes return, overall points return, etc.? Players tend to get better in a stable environment

We return 4.3 points and 15 minutes per game. Not a good sign.

2- Who was added in the Portal or from European Pro Leagues? Players with track records in major conferences or quality Euro leagues are highly likely to produce in the BE. Lower or Mid-Major players will have a lower hit rate..

We bring in 3 players from HMs, all 3 were bench players. The rest are from mostly losing or mediocre low majors.

3- Does the makeup of the team seem to align with the HC's way of coaching?

There are several players that are Sha-type players - guys who can defend, play hard and don't shy away from physicality. But there are also several key players who have terrible defensive stats and don't seem to have the strength or mentality to play how Sha demands.

Sha will get some benefit of the doubt for overachieving last year. But the talent brought in by other Big East teams is real so overachieving will be harder this season. I think our Roster ranks 9th or10th but I'd probably pick us around 7th right now, sight unseen.

Did you expect us to be on the verge of making the NCAA tournament last year? We were right there on the cutting line.
At the start of last season all the experts predicted that we would firmly be in last place.
Yes, we VERY POSITIVELY SURPRISED.
You can’t make the tournament if you don’t beat any tournament teams. Our best win was vs a team that played in the first four, and our second best win was a team that played in the crown lol

The Big East must do better, much better, in the OOC games.
Except for UCONN, which dominated, the rest of the BE was rather putrid in OOC games last year. This causes us to have a lack of respect in comparison to other conferences and limits the # NCAA bids we get.
We MUST DO BETTER OOC this year.

The OOC didn’t help last year but preseason expectations weren’t there for most of the BE based on the returning players and offseason. You had two really good teams, one solid team just on the right side of the bubble and mediocrity to bad for the rest. How the teams are projected preseason has some impact on where everyone starts from a ranking perspective, I believe. And this year I think most of college basketball will be pretty bullish on the depth of the league based on the offseason.

I don’t see a 2 loss conference winner this year. There is a reason it hasn’t happened before SJU just did it the last two years. I see a 4 or 5 conference loss winner.

Far too early but I see the top 3 in the Big East not as good as the top 3 last year but the rest of the conference better than the rest of the conference was last year.

Still overall nothing special.

I might move Marquette to Tier 1 with what they retained and who they brought in the door since Shaka decided not to be allergic to the portal this offseason.
