Many in our fanbase have a habit of doing this thing where we make an assumption based on a truth i.e. Duke has a favorable relationship with Nike.....and then ASSUME that makes our inferences from that known.

None of us can definitively know what percentage of Scheyer's success is related to Nike versus what percentage is his own set of traits.

Also, the idea that he hasn't won enough titles in a sample size of four seasons is kind of crazy for a couple of reasons. Since the tournament expanded in 1985, has any coach regularly won championships at a 25% clip? No. Your expectation is that Scheyer outperform every coach in the modern era or it is substandard....patently absurd. Furthermore, the idea that having the most talent means you win is simply false to start with. Until someone can quantify the idea that the most talent equals titles, coaches that have the kind of success Scheyer has should deserve a little respect.

And, yes, I hate Duke. They are my #1 rival, personally. But as a CBB fan, I always have to feel like I'm at least trying to be objective and honest. Scheyer is being held to a higher standard than anyone in recent history.

Over the years, I laid out an unassailable case for how Nike recruited for Duke starting back when Coach K took over at USA basketball (which is run by Nike).

Im too busy today to post it all again, but Duke hired Rachel Baker as their gm. She was a bag women for Nike and ran EBYL for them which, along with Adidas, started the dirty aau underground.

She was even caught with a literal bag of cash. She even had ties to Michael Avenatti. You can read about it here because the usual suspects will never report it: https://sports.yahoo.com/duke-hires-former-nike-bagwoman-164109190.html

As if any more proof was needed.

I think we might be walking right past one another in the hallway. There's no doubt that Duke is getting helped heavily by Nike....not contesting that. You could prove that 100% and it still doesn't mean that Scheyer isn't a good coach for all the reasons I already laid out.

I don't see Dukes coach leaving. Not until he at least wins his alma mater a championship. Michigans coach could very well take off like flash to the NBA.
That is not going to happen, no matter how much they spend. He only wins when he has far better talent than the other team. When the deck is even, he seems lost, and when the pressure is on the line he can't handle it, and yes you heard it right here, he will not win next years championship.

All you Billy Donavan lovers need to check his record his first 2 years at Florida against Pope's first 2 years at Kentucky. You will be shocked, he had a loosing record.

Fair points. I think Sheyer is an outstanding recruiter. I think he carried that load before K retired. He is a young head coach and is still learning. I think he made some crucial mistakes in games that may have stopped Duke from advancing but I have no reason to believe he does not learn and improve. K built a fraternity feel for Duke. It’s a prestigious private school with a solid alum base and a great basketball tradition since the 70s with an environment like no other. Nike surely helps but Duke also helps Nike.
