For every example where this might work out for a coaching situation, there are probably many more examples (both college and pro) where the coach from a smaller team could not translate that success to a larger team. Many times the smaller team coach cannot handle the larger atmosphere of a bigger club. Let's hope HCMC can make this work!

I think first and foremost you need to be a good gameday coach. I think of Urban Meyer - killed it at Bowling Green and Utah and just did it bigger and better at Florida and OSU. He was an excellent gameday coach before he became an elite recruiter. But, I think there's a limit to this kind of success transfer. Luke Fickell, for example, is still a very good coach and always will be. But, he can't elevate a 2nd tier B1G team beyond where it is to be honest and most of the factors for that he can't change - namely that it's Wisconsin. We got to see what a really good recruiter could do for us for over a decade and the X's and O's are what did him in. Certainly had teams that could compete with OSU, Michigan, Oregon, etc. - just couldn't get over that last hump and given all the hiring mistakes and on field decisions/game plans the 'now or never' moment played out the opposite we all would have liked.

Landscape in CFB has changed so much; the money is such a big factor now. I will be shocked if Indiana can sustain their success (unless they keep getting tons of cash) and even then it's no guaranteed (Tennessee, A&M, Texas, Texas Tech all spend mountains of cash with nothing to show for it). I think Campbell is a good X's and O's coach and he knows how to run a program. He knows how to outpunch his weight. But, will that transition? No idea. Like what I see so far though.

That's the best comment I've heard about the Campbell era. I'm optimistic that he'll turn PSU into the type of team that Harbaugh built Michigan into in the early 2020s, meaning a bludgeoning, no-nonsense style which PSU used to have but lost along the way. Under the last coach, although we had good success overall, it was done too much with smoke and mirrors.

Campbell has been successful at Toledo and ISU, but this is a step up. I have no doubt that he can coach football, but he must be able to recruit, if not at the level of OSU and Oregon, pretty close to the level of them. I'm hopeful that he'll be able to come close to that with what he's going to be able to sell, like a refurbished stadium, etc.

Like I've posted before, who in their right mind could've predicted that Saban would win seven NCs after he went to LSU after a good but unspectacular tenure at MSU?

Sure...fair...but almost all coaches take that path. It's rare for a Ryan Day or Marvin Freeman to take over an established program. Sometimes that works...sometimes that fails miserably as well. All you can do is hire the best available and be prepared to move on if he fails.

Not really sure if Coaching, Motivation and Development matter much in the new era of College Football. It’s all about $$$. Not sure that College Football will actually survive with a 105 payed players. How many schools can actually sustain the money it will take. How many other sports will end up dropped, in order to keep a football program going
