''Student Athlete'' is totally a thing of the past.
He's just continuing his professional career. 💰
Thats BEEN a thing of the past; pull up an old clemson football game on youtube and listen to them interview clemson players from 20+ years back. If we're gonna insist on playing in rome, gotta do as the romans do.

A 6-foot-11 forward from Argentina, Juan Fernandez committed to South Carolina on June 1. He is just 23 years old and has already played for five seasons in Spain’s Liga ACB (which is one of the strongest leagues other than the NBA).

Lamont Paris Makes South Carolina Recruiting Splash As Argentine 6-Foot-11 Star Makes SEC Move | College Sports Network

Sounds like a great get.

Bu i'm curious about how this is legal. We've discussed how colleges are trying to pull in G league players by arguing they weren't really pros. How do we justify just flat out hiring a pro player?

May be a sign of things to come if the professional tag doesnt apply to the foreign players.

If you do like the Romans do, you can't be surprised or complain when the Vandals and the Visigoths sack your cities.

It says a lot that there are pro athletes who want to go back to playing college ball. I'm sure it's not because they want to get their degree.

Averages 4 points a game. Don't really see it as a needle mover, if it's even allowed to go through.

Kinda ridiculous that universities supported by our taxes are now recruiting pros from foreign countries. I doubt this guy is here for 2 full semesters, and I doubt he earns many credits, if any. I've all but given up on college sports until/unless they rein in this crap.
It stopped being College Sports long before we signed this guy. I could care less these days about any commitment or signing in any sport. I will simply watch whatever game for whatever sport for whatever season. Then put it behind me.

Agreed, and I think this attitude is spreading.

Yes! That's exactly who I thought he looked like too. Did Divac shoot the 3? Didn't think so, but could be wrong. This is Lamont's last chance year!
Divac was more of a mid-range shooters. Bigs weren't as free to just hang out at the 3 point line in the 90's and early 2000's when he played.

Maybe. Who knows? I don't know what he's averaging, but Sindarius Thornwell is currently playing for the Xinjiang Flying Tigers of the Chinese Basketball Association after a year in the Polish basketball league and and two years in the Turkish basketball league before that. There is some real talent in those European leagues, lots of guys who were great college players but were marginal NBA players.

Not disputing that the system was always rigged and people cheated, but it's so blatant now. However, our scholarships should be for American kids. The whole idea at inception was to give kids a change at college who otherwise never could have done. Why deny our kids?

The entire student athlete model has been trashed by all parties involved...players, coaches, administrators, legal powers.

Getting an education is no longer any factor in consideration.

There isn't even a pretense of maintaining the student athlete model. It's done. Gone. Extinct. Never coming back.

Don't forget the fans. The fans are the ones funding this new model of college sports.

You're right. And fans may ultimately be the biggest culprits. We ultimately hold all the power. No fans = no money. But most fans want to see a W by their team's logo, by any means possible. When the CFP expands to 16 or beyond, the #16 team who didn't make the CFP the year prior will be able to boast about making the CFP the next year even if they only check in at 16 again. Doesn't matter that they aren't any better than the year prior. They can now say they made the CFP. That's all that matters. Keep lowering the bar until everyone can claim success.

Apply that thinking across the board with transfers, endless eligibility, massive NIL payments.

Just win so I can say my team won.

Just curious, how have the 7 foot players done after they left us for the portal?
