Is the 2027 class a program changer?

Looks like the class is loaded, but can Rhule and company have a good enough year to keep them? Or has Rhule and TT convinced the recruits they can be program changers?

Freshman are still freshman. You aren't winning with a lot of freshman unless you have a bunch of upper classman all-Americans next to them. 15 years ago with a top 5 class, it would mean winning in 2-3 years as they mature but now we can't assume the class will stay intact whatsoever. That being said if there is legislation to actually create some limits to transfers then you never know. Obviously this year is going range from a disaster to a dud, the 27 class will come in and I assume they are all promised starting positions. The 2027 year will be a "rebuild". From Rhule's perspective, which is all that matters, is he will find himself hard to fire in 2028 if has bunch of decent sophomores that he can sell to the AD as "being ready soon".

I believe we will have a Callahan level of collapse this year, the class will disintegrate, Rhule will be fired.

We'll see. Callahan entered his 4th year with more momentum than Rhule is, and had a very good looking 2008 recruiting class that evaporated when the season collapsed. Commits included guys like Blaine Gabbert, Trevor Robinson, Dan Hoch, Jonas Gray, Reilly Reiff - all ended up elsewhere. I sure hope Rhule can exceed expectations for the season and can keep the bulk of this class intact.

Do people actually believe coaches "promise" incoming players they will be starters as freshmen? As a coach, you are doing everyone a disservice by doing that.
They might make promises sometimes...it doesn't mean they will keep those promises though.

The '27 Class is another shiny toy. "Look! Over there!"

I've been very excited about the '27 class.... until I wasn't. No more kool-aid, not more shiny toys to get me excited. Everyone has their own Rhule story and timeline on when they lost confidence in him (some are still hanging on to the hope/confidence in him). My timeline was last November. Yeah, the Minny game was the starting point and awful - but November was just disgusting. (I had started to slide the season before, but gave him the benefit of the doubt for year 3).

Tom's magical '92 class took a 9-win program and made NU elite. Can the '27 class make an average team better? Sure. But hopes of becoming elite? Nah. And that's if Rhule is even here in '27, he needed the '27 class to be in '26.

Offensive and defensive lines.

This will be the first year Rhule has QB depth for the upcoming season.
Our offensive and defensive line talent is FAR from playoff caliber lol In fact it is nearer to the bottom of the P4 teams, especially on O line and at DT. You couldn’t name 5 p4 teams with worse DTs than ours.

Impossible to say: Can we guarantee they get developed right. We have no idea if we can retain them. Can Rhule be careful enough to only add necessary pieces in the portal to prevent the newcomers that they are being recruited over?

This is one of those things that we only will know once it's passed.

I think a lot of our OL and DL issues has been coaching. Especially the DL. I do agree they aren't playoff quality though.

There's a lot of reasons to have issues with Rhule.

One of the ones I remember is promoting a DB coach with few DC stops to DC. And the other time he was DC the group went from top 15 the year before to the 60s if memory serves. All because he had a good pass defense in the NFL. Then having the gall after saying he's never had a great offense. To say well we've always had great defenses so we'll be fine. Trust me guys.

Nothing would be worse if we had to deal with Freshman Raiola to dealing with another true freshman.

Gonna take a stab: Northwestern, Purdue, Colorado, Rutgers, Boston College, Colorado, UCLA, Mississippi, State, Baylor, Kansas, Cal, Arkansas, South Carolina, Maryland, Michigan, State, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, State, Syracuse, WVU.

Surely there’s 5 in there.

Raiola was a top 2 or 3 Freshman qb in the nation. Literally most Freshman qbs in history have been worse. I don't blame him for getting his uncle a job, and getting himself playing time for his first two years of college. He lead us to back to back bowl games, and carried himself in the right way. Sadly it felt like he was expected to be the man in the room because there is no leadership on the team, that isn't fair to do to a teenager when there are millionaire coaches and guys who are like 25 on the roster. Do you think Tom would have looked at his players and blamed them for pushing boundaries, getting more money, getting more for their family? Somebody has to say no in the right way to keep them happy but developing.

We made a bowl game last year because of Dylan, Emmitt, decent run blocking, a really good secondary, and decent special teams. Dylan, Emmitt, our secondary are gone. our ST coach is gone. Giving up 7 ypc on the season is going to look really bad when we are relying on stopping the run to win games because every other unit is subpar.

This is a long response to a simple point. I would prefer every freshman sit. Don't care how big of a name they are.

You are correct it is a disservice, but in the modern era players aren't going to sit at a place like NU. Every 18 year old knows that Nebraska sucks...the team sucks, the city sucks, the state sucks(to 18 year old national recruits), they could go to L.A, Atlanta, Florida, Boulder, Austin...Nebraska has nothing to offer but cash and playing time and a great game day atmosphere. Kids aren't getting an education if they don't want one...Nebraska used to be about winning, a supportive environment to get a degree, and a place to stay out of trouble. Those things either don't exist or don't matter anymore.

We made a bowl game last year because of a cupcake schedule and Emmett. Nebraska had mediocre-at-best run blocking with their 82nd ranked yards per carry (4.21 ypc) and 11th in the conference.

The secondary shouldn't see a step back. Hartzog missed the entire season and then left. Buford got benched for Guthrie. Singleton was either good or bad, rarely consistent. Ceyair Wright couldn't even get drafted despite being a Midseason All-American. Secondary might even be better this year, especially with Aurich's system. Addison Williams is killing it. McDougle should be very valuable. Marshall returns. Guthrie returns healthy. You have Rhett, Conn, Benning, Jones, Charles, Evans, Odem (5 Star DB).

Special Teams *shouldn't* be a difficult thing to coach up and keep operating, but Ed Foley sure made it look like it was harder than a surgeon performing a heart transplant surgery while blindfolded and upside down. Ek's departure should not produce a drop off in ST.

Nebraska gave up 4.82 yards per carry last year. You think they're going to be worse than Rutgers last year who gave up 6.79ypc and 210 yards per game???? Come on now.

When haven’t we come out of the gate hot. All the top 40 maybe top 30 schools off er every Tom dick and Harry. Then legit top 20 schools wait and pick and choose. Half these kids that make us the top 10 today won’t be here in 3 months when Georgia, OSU or whoever decide they want them. It’s a sugar rush right now.

Guess what - nobody on here cares about Iowa’s recruiting. So get lost, nut job.

Our game day atmosphere isn't anything special or unique. Many teams with as good or better.
