Defense, interior scoring and rebounding will be the 26-27 teams weakness

Interior scoring just received a massive strengthening. If we get the type of PG play Im expecting plus now having Momcilovic added for tremendous spacing, Malachi Moreno is going to absolutely eat this year. Last season he had an ELITE .764 free throw rate with only a 16.4 usage rate. When he gets the ball on the block in a position to score teams hammered him.

Ever team has a weakness. What is your way to early predictions of next years teams potential flaws.
Mine were yours at first especially the interior defense and rebounding and worried about getting pushes around with our slenderness inside. But Franck made me feel a lot better about that. And Pope may have to experiment with more zone next year cover for some on the ball defensive weaknesses but an aggressive zone with athletism and length is not a bad thing at all. I can see trapping and disruption out of that that we can feed off of.

No way this team will be worse on defense than last year's team. If you blindfolded three of our guys, we would still be better than last year's team.

The one unknown that is the big factor on this point is court awareness. The 2025-26 roster had enough length and athleticism, that they SHOULD have been much, MUCH better defensively. However, the lack of court awareness as a team KILLED them. Hopefully, if the 26-27 roster has a significantly higher IQ on the court.

defense will be a weakness but its always a weakness for Pope. But interior scoring wont be . Diallo is superb at scoring from the paint to the mid range, Wilkins gets to the rim and scores, and then McBride and Moreno are good scorers in the paint. Remains to be seen with rebounding, Diallo as a PG last year averaged 4rpg and we'll need Wilkins and Kam to use their athleticism to go get some more rebounds but they both average 2 a game which isnt bad, just up it to 3 and we're good , but if Mom is going to be our PF, we need the guards to rebound more.
Yeah, I'm not worried about interior scoring, or about our 5 spot in any way. But I AM worried about defense and rebounding from the forward spots. Kam can defend the perimeter but isn't a great rebounder. McBride is a decent rebounder, defense a question mark. Momcilovic isn't known for defense or rebounding. N'Diaye could be the best rebounder/interior defender (depends on how he adjusts to the college game) but his offensive game is to sit on the perimeter and shoot a mediocre percentage on high volume from three. Hawthorne is the wild card. Noah is actually a pretty solid rebounder. You're right, we'll need our guards to crash the boards. We WILL be tall and long across the board, so maybe we can use that to our advantage. But defense and rebounding are largely about instinct and drive, you have it or you don't.

Turnovers. I have no idea how our new guards' handles are. So until I go research their stats, my ignorance has me thinking turnovers, rebounding and defense will be a challenge.

And Moreno needs to figure out how to block more shots, rebound and dunk without missing. I'm not sure how Kepnang (sp?) will be - isn't he a hoss in rebounding, kind of like Dioubate on steriods?

I think you are right about defense and rebounding. Momcilovic hurts us in defense, replacing our best defender (Kam). And while he doesn't rebound well either, neither did Kam. But we have 2 tall guards, so maybe they can help out there. And Moreno was a solid rebounder. So there is some hope there.
Moreno can score inside. N'Daiye probably can too. I'm not too worried about that, just score, I don't care where from. To me the bigger question is do we have the 3 (at least 2) "go-to guys", guys who can go get you a bucket when you need one? I don't really know. While Brea could shoot, he wasn't that. I think the same of Momcilovic. I think it has to come from Zoom & Wilkins. Maybe N'Daiye too. I think Moreno will be a good scorer, but not really creating his own shot.

Man, I hope not. Last year, between poor ball security and bad decision making, we were turnover terrible. That was one of the hardest things for me to watch about last year's team. Just an absolute failure to value the possession.

I don't follow the portal closely, but I am hopeful that next year's roster has better handles and better basketball IQ. If the players develop individually and gel as a team, I think we could be really good on offense.

Does anybody know if we have regular season games next year in Nashville or MSG?
If so...please for the love of god, show up in those games.
Oweh was a dog but he was kind of a quiet dog. I want to see some Ramel Bradley level fire on the damn floor.

I really wish he would full court press and pressure. I’m tired of half court. I think need to speed teams up and shoot like pitinos teams used to do.
What's the last FF team that you can remember that primarily played full court pressure defense?

It's a half court game for the elite teams. Any really good team can handle pressure.

I think rebounding is a bigger issue if Momcilovic starts at PF instead of SF
This is my concern too. The makeup is very similar to the 24-25 team, especially if Mom plays the 3. It's deeper than that team though.

The REAL key is if the ?s become .s or !s. Kam, B. Hawthorne, N'diyae, McBride, Wilkins, Diallo...all those guys have significant ?s to their games. Can they evolve? If they do, good things lie ahead. If they don't, it'll just be another "meh" at best season.

I just hope they come out ready to play and compete and not get down 20 each game. Or get punched in the mouth like Iowa St. Did and just quit.
That’s another reason why people are down on Pope. It seems like for whatever reason whenever a team comes out ready to really compete for 40 minutes we have to many instances of just quitting. I’d love to know why that is and how he can fix that.

Presses are used to slow the game down more than speed the game up these days.
Most teams don’t even know how to press these days. Not properly. They rarely force guys into the sidelines but when I watch teams who do guys turn it over like crazy. It’s risky all game because so many big forwards can handle the ball now, but I still believe it has a place in the game.

After reading some of these post, they should just shutter the basketball program, erase the history and salt the earth. Might as well have another flood to get rid of Ky fans. Bottom line, let them play a few games before declaring they’re going to suck.

I really think we are better than 24-25 and that bunch could have been E8. Pope has yo get to the S16 minimum IMO to keep his gig

I think my fear is that I just don't know to expect from these new guards.

next years teams potential flaws....

fans not showing up to games. dead gameday environments. little if any home court advantage. no neutral court advantage.

I think the defense will be much better. Ball handling will be much better. Rebounding will be much better. Shooting should be way better.
