Yes. The faculty decides what the requirements are. There are no hard and fast rules about what a BA or BS means. If WVU is serious about eliminating the foreign language departments, then either the faculty approve BA curriculums that don’t include foreign language or they go the online route.

Foreign languages are really under siege nowadays, a comparatively easy way to cut costs.

I realize that finances has killed the notion of education for education's sake a long time ago, but it's a shame. The original intent of requiring foreign languages was not to prepare you for what you might need to speak someday but to assist you with what you might need to research someday.

Ok so I’m late to the party but tuition going up 20 percent from 22-24? Wtf. How do they justify that amount and then room and board going up over 3k each year? Are they on crack. Do they run businesses that are profitable? If so then why don’t they have the same mindset with cost control at psu. I wish I didn’t brainwash my girls at an early age that it is psu or nothing. They could get a free ride in sc at Clemson or South Carolina.
just really shocked at how bloated psu has come with hiring worthless positions and then asking us for more money in every possible way.

Same could be said about parts of NYC in the early 1900's but the languages have changed. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

To say nothing of California or Arizona. Parts of Florida are Spanish speaking as well but from the islands, not from Mexico, and of course Texas is another border state where Spanish is as common as English. If I were inclined to learn a second language now however I believe Chinese would be the best one to learn. In 20-30 years their economy may overtake ours. I do think it will take a very long time given their political situation.

When I was a Chemistry undergrad at PSU, we were required to take either German or Russian for the major because most of the "academic research" in the field was written in either German or Russian. Russian is a fun language to speak, but not much fun to learn if you are starting out completely from the beginning...

As a chemistry major at PSU, I considered taking Russian. Then I decided that it would take too much time away from my chemistry courses, so I opted for German (and aced it ).

We will see. It will certainly be interesting. There are some smart people out there saying that China's one child law has them about 10 years away from having a collapse due to lack of people and their growth is not sustainable because of it.
The worry is that the Chinese recognize that and will rectify the problem with aggression or conquest. They changed the law in 2016, obviously recognizing the problem....they didn’t change it out of the goodness of their hearts.

Have you ever been to China? It's a sh*thole. Most of the country is rural and uneducated. They are completely dependent on stealing American/International IP and providing sweatshops for international manufacturing. Take one or both of these away and they're nothing. Sadly, US businesses prioritize profits over the well being/livelihood (everything actually) of their workers, and we are where we are. Most don't even care that China steals their IP - f*cking sad.

Learn French or Japanese. Enjoying Paris and Tokyo in their native tongue is miles better than any satisfaction you may get from speaking Chinese with your future overlords.
