I feel like James Brown deserves a spot ahead of either Viola Davis or Clowney.

Andie MacDowell(Gaffney) and Joanne Woodward(Greenville and Paul Newman's wife) say hi

Joanne Woodward won the 1958 Academy Award for Best Actress for her groundbreaking performance in the 1957 psychological drama The Three Faces of Eve.

Sigh...it's always rather painful when lists like this suffer from acute recency bias.

Jackson is obviously on that list, as is another fellow (perhaps not routinely thought of as "from" South Carolina but it makes total sense that he spent formative teenage years there, and as a Virginian, I'm all too eager to offload him), that ******* Woodrow Wilson. Between the two of them, you probably have the twin root causes of everything that is wrong with American government and politics today.

So that leaves two spots. I won't be cheeky and suggest someone like John C. Calhoun (though his practical impact is...formidable) or, Strom Thurmond.

I'm quite happy with James Brown, though I will confess Dizzy Gillespie was awfully tempting.

Beyond that...I gotta say it...this state is pretty lame.

So i was contemplating Virginia, and thinking about some of the possible categories...

1. Politics - Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Harrison (x2), Wilson, Taylor, Tyler. That's just the presidents, and leaves out the likes of henry, clay, mason, austin and others.
2. Athletics - S. Snead, Secretariat, Ashe, G. Hill
3. Arts and Literature - GC Scott, S. Maclain, Poe, T. Wolfe, R.Stanley
4. Military - Macarthur, those who shall not be named, Marshall

Then again, we have pat robertson and jerry falwell.

Secretariat's 25 length win in the 1973 Belmont Stakes is, IMHO, one of the greatest athletic accomplishments of all time. By a horse, but still ...

Yep. I actually still get chills when I hear the audio of the race call: "He is moving like a TREMENDOUS MACHINE!"

Jackson doesn't belong on any Rushmore list.

Did you watch it live? I was sitting with my jaw on the floor. A mile and a half and every quarter mile was faster than the one before... he fu.cking accelerated through the entire race. And the quarter he ran in the gallop out after the finish line...it was (unofficially) faster again.

Btw fear not South calinkians. I took a look at Iowa, and with the exceptions of Johnny Carson, Bob feller, John Wayne, and maybe John L, it seems to be a very shallow talent pool.

(funny story - my dad told me that in the coal mining town of his youth there were always three pictures in public spaces — John L, Jesus Christ, and fdr, “in that order”. .

"Down goes Fraziuh! Down goes Fraziuh!" I think of Cosell's famous call every time I see a mention of Joe Frazier. (Spelling Frazier's name somewhat phonetically gives more authenticity to Cosell's call, I think.)
