At this point it doesn’t matter if he comes or not. Mark Pope has proven to be the worst recruiter in college basketball. He literally can’t sell UK basketball, think about that. He has consistently had to overpay for every player he has gotten. This one will not be any different. This
has been a text book example on how not to handle an off season.
It absolutely matters.
He's been a bad recruiter.
So if he lands a huge recruit, that will help change that perception, at least to some degree. This is a win that he absolutely needs.
You're putting Pope in a spot where he literally can't win.

Maybe you’re right. It does appear to do that. I just don’t put a lot of stock in recruiting if it’s 100% a money grab. I’m sure the top players didn’t go to Duke because they got the highest paycheck there. Eventually it would be nice to get top recruit that wanted to play for UK and not just the highest bidder.

He doesn't. He never passes an opportunity to crap on Pope though.
Not true. I understand you think facts are attacks. You are just too emotional about Pope to open your eyes.

JMI smacked Matt jones down so he uses every chance to blame them.

No other coach at UK has a problem with JMI. Even Pope has sung their praises.

I know pretty much every major donor. None of them have a problem with JMI

But I’m open to listening. What evidence do you have that that JMI is the bogeyman?

Everyone is in the same recruiting/pay boat now. What Duke has is a dedicated GM that used to work for Nike, has major connections, and knows how to sell the brand.

Kentucky has Mark Pope and Keegan Brown.

My negative morning thoughts:

-losing another high stakes recruitment is extremely hard to come back from if you’re Pope
-national insiders were very much onto Louisville’s chances for Milan at the combine, were we in fact used to bump up the price(like Pope flat out confirmed happens)?
-National insiders also all came out as the portal opened very confidently stating Louisville would spend the most money this spring…that hasn’t quite happened yet
-I’ve never believed that UK offers a better role/fit/system. They’re remarkably similar imo

To me it comes down to whether the kid wants the chance to be a star and all that comes with it. Or would he rather have less pressure on him at Louisville. Thats not to downplay Louisville as a program. The spotlight nationally is just very different and the potential for negative spotlighting at UK this season is astronomical after last year and Pope being on the hot seat. I think that is the single most significant thing giving Milan pause from picking UK. All that to say I think Louisville is the “safer” pick for Milan.

I don't know what it is. Maybe it's the six seven in the anon's username, but I'm going to believe this one!

nvm username is changed

Bad recruiter lands Diallo, Wilkins, Moreno, Kam, Ndiaye, McBride, Big Franck …. 🤦‍♂️
the head coach of Kentucky got players.. wow such a great recruiter, let's ignore every recruiting battle and sit in shock that UK basketball has players on it's roster.

The truth is that Pope recruited with Mediocrity at BYU. By all accounts he should have really ramped up his game with the gravity of Big Blue Nation behind him.

But he hasn't.
He must be an incredible developer of talent, then. Amari, Brea, Jackson Robinson, Moreno, Oweh. I can see why Wilkins and NDaiye and others committed to UK. By your assessment, these guys are not top talent. They see that Pope develops the “sub par” into pros. Nice backhanded compliment.

Now, we know Nate Oats wanted Wilkins and Lloyd wanted Zoom and the NBA has been keeping an eye on NDiaye, but let’s not ruin this moment with those facts.

What did he wins that matters?

We will wait. How many conference titles or conference tourney or final fours?

I think he made quarters of cbi one year. Kudos.

Anybody trust these guys? I saw an earlier “MM” X-post from these guys that I thought was aligned to Moreno. Now it looks like there may have been back-door comms with Momcilovic’s camp while he was in the draft. Who knows…this is exhausting…dude needs to make decision!

He is an elite recruiter and incredible developer of talent. That's why UK finished 9th in the SEC last season.

Huh? Nonsequitur award for the day goes to you? Yes, in his two years at UK he has not made the final four or won a NC. That has zero impact on the makeup of the current roster and how it was recruited. Geez, the Pope Derangement Syndrome victims will move the ball just to find a way to express their victim hood and angst.

I think the "nuance" comes down to :

Players know and respect the UK brand, and they know what that can do for their future career. They want to play for UK.

They do not, however, have any respect for Mark Pope as a coach. They don't trust him to put them in the best position to succeed. And every one of their friends and close family members is telling them to run like hell away from him. They do not want to play for Mark Pope.
