Why?

She will have two years of eligibility in 8 days.
If the NCAA adopts the new ‘5 in 5’ rule (which is quite possible and expected), both Medina and Whiting could be awarded an extra year of eligibility. That is also true for any player that can be accepted into graduate school.

For the Iowa women basketball, a program that is well known and respected for academic excellence, that would mean an older/more mature team. As a result of this (as well as the new dynamics of the transfer portal), recruitment in the future is more speculative than ever.

On the 22nd the NCAA will change eligibility to 5 years for anyone eligible to play next season and are under the age requirement.
That is the proposal for now and it is expected to pass, but it is not a ‘done deal’ just yet. I personally am in favor of it and hope that it happens.

I think a lot of members here are not aware of this potentially imminent rule change or they do not understand the implications. The impact of the ‘5 in 5’ rule change will have far reaching repercussions.

First of all is the resulting increase in the number of graduate student athletes participating. Of course that will necessarily increase the average age of teams resulting in an increase in the overall level of play. It could also potentially level the overall playing field as the very best 5-star players opt out of the fifth year and are drafted into the WNBA after their four years.

It will also reduce the number of opportunities for [marginal] HS seniors to receive a college education from athletic participation. (The same thing happened with the extra year for Covid except this proposal is a permanent change.)

The NCAA is also considering separate rule changes in the future that could limit transfer privileges.

It's Jan's Twitter/x. I don't have an account, so look at pages sometimes with xcancel.com. Maybe that doesn't link properly through the forum. Try pasting the address into your browser? Or just look up her post yesterday, if you have Twitter.

For someone with no social media ..you sure post alot on a social media site.
I started posting back in 2014, eight years longer than you but have 1200+ fewer posts. Not that active in totality. When I worked I seldom posted.

I started posting here in the early 2000s under a different name. Not sure what your point was.

And there is nothing correct about my join date or number of posts. My name on the previous site didn't have a space between my first and last name so my name did not match up to pull over the the info.

It truly is sad what has become of society. Last week I had a young woman walk into me while standing on the sidewalk. She was focused on taking pictures of herself while walking down the sidewalk. Crazy
I have people almost walk right into me all the time, and I want to scream, "hey, look up from the damn phone". There is evidently a new neck injury related to people spending so much time looking down at their phones. Its beyond ridiculous. Just got home from getting a quick bite at a fast food place and the Mom and two daughters sitting across from us spent the entire time, each of three, on their PHONES! People, put the phones down and interact......

I usually speak loudly "Look Up" when walking up on anyone walking towards me looking at their phone

Back to 27 recruiting. Jan was in Minneapolis for a tourney several weeks ago. Seubert and Mya Wilson both played and named all tourney. I think Jan really wants to add Mya to the 2027 class.

I was scrolling through the live at the lakes X account, They showed a clip of coaches in attendance posted on May 19th, Jan was the first coach shown. Synopsis on Jada from writer covering tourney posted on X.

Read on a gopher site, posters bemoaning the fact that Chloe Johnson wasn't looking at the gophers. Unfortunately doesn't look great for the Hawks. She has visited UCLA, USC, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. Has plans to visit Duke and North Carolina also.

They hard going after the Wilson sisters hard though.

If Dawn Plitzuweit is able to tighten the borders in the years ahead then the Gophers will become a B10 powerhouse program because Minnesota consistently produces D1 talent, highly ranked prospects…..and Plitzuweit is known as a pretty good recruiter (and coach). Time will tell.

Stanford is not the program it once was and there has been a few articles about the players not liking the current coach

And with Stanford joining the ACC, get used to sitting in a plane seat

Always like to read the players quotes as to why they selected a college. Most of the time it gives comfort in why they didn't select IA and that we didn't meet all their main needs. Other times it's a head scratcher.

From her quoted statements, 2028 guard Jhaliana Guy committed to Stanford because she wanted:
1) "I want to be the best student possible while playing the game I love at a high level ... I crave winning as much as I care about being a great student."
2) "Having the opportunity to be constantly surrounded by success will only push me to be an even greater version of myself."
3) "Stanford is all around a winning school in all aspects within sports."
4) "There is a wall on campus that displays all the national championships they have won and it left an enduring impact on me. I want to be a part of winning another one with Coach Paye."
5) The coaches "showed nothing but love for me and my family."

6) #1 basketball goal? "I’m going to the WNBA."

Bulletpoint takeaways:
1) Academics: Pursuit of a world-class education
2) Playing high-level competitive basketball
3) Strong winning culture and legacy
4) Prestige of the program tradition
5) Opportunity to compete for national championships
6) Get ready for the WNBA

Obviously the new kid on the block factor is I need more mins to get more money later.

Another factor hampering the class of 2028 in committing early (at least right now) is if the 5th year eligibility is added.

Guy has reported offers from the who's who of college basketball. USC, TCU, Michigan, Stanford, UCLA, Kentucky, Alabama, Arizona, Houston, Ohio State, Iowa, Louisville, Miami, Clemson, Florida, Mississippi State, Syracuse. Add Illinois to the list also as the HC is from Guy's hometown of Clinton, IA.

Since Paye never won a Natty as HC with Stanford, it seems the college is more important than the coach when choosing Stanford.

Suspect UCLA could pop to the top of her list now (at least from the list above) that they have at least one recent Natty now.

If I was a prestigious college with world-class education that had at least one Natty + a wall to look at, I'd be giving her a call.

We'll see if see stays true to her top wish list or deviates from it a little. Kids do change when they get a little older and new priorities take hold. It could be why Stanford was dropped.

I had high expectations and world class ambitions when I was admitted to college also…,.. then I took a hit off a bong half way through my freshman year and my life plans changed forever …….just kidding, sort of….. OK completely.

As you stated priorities change as kids get older, As a skeptical old guy I think the desire to see her value on the open market may be a pretty big part of the decision (Nothing wrong with that at all IMO), The landscape continues to evolve quickly.

I believe the chaotic situation at the Stanford WBB program and the allegations against the coach have a major influence on her decommitment decision. A decision to leave the state went wrong. It's impossible to predict what she'll do now. Will she give up on leaving the state and prefer to stay home, or will she stick to her decision to leave home and choose a new place? There's no way to know. We only know that now we have a new chance, and we can hope that she chooses to stay in Iowa.

Jhaliana Guy from Clinton/IA #19 in the 2028 class decommit Stanford and reopen her recruitment. Huge opportunity for Jan Jensen and LaSondra Barrett.

Iowa is surely still interested, but they won't probably have any number offers until they know what they have. Probably the same for most schools. A new commitment somewhere is probably a ways off yet. Another year?

She announced her commitment to Stanford in early 2025, even before any recruit in the class of 2027. Since that didn't work out, perhaps she's not in a hurry now. It doesn't really matter when the commitment announcement will be. But recruitment restarted yesterday, it could last weeks, months, or even more than a year. That doesn't matter at the moment.

All this buzz about a kid that hasn't played a minute in high school yet! I know the summer programs are good but the kids are certainly not anywhere near mature for these decisions.

If you're referring to Guy she'll be a junior next year, so already 2 years played.
