Defense, interior scoring and rebounding will be the 26-27 teams weakness

I just hope they come out ready to play and compete and not get down 20 each game. Or get punched in the mouth like Iowa St. Did and just quit.

Until Pope shows that he can be a consistent winner, I’ll say coaching is our biggest weakness. He’s way too nice and the players don’t always play hard. How many times did our team quit this past year?

And lack of talent, juice, and excitement

Oh and those 10mins every game where our guys look like they have never touched a basketball before

This appears to be popes worst defensive team he will have had here which is a scary thought. Defense, rebounding and coaching all areas of major concern,

Defense potentially. This team will have no issue scoring any way they like. Wilkins and and Zoom can drive and dish with the best of em'.

Momcilovic, Williams, McBride will command a healthy amount of respect around the 3 point line to keep that paint area breathing just fine.

We’ll be vulnerable to penetration because we’ll have to go big more than is wise to leverage our bigs’ range.

Our spacing won’t be great.

We’ll rely too much on one-pass pick and roll stuff, resulting in opponent defenses always knowing what we’re going to do.

All because Pope still doesn’t understand his own system and won’t bring in one more decent guard with range after we (hopefully) land Momo (and this list will be a lot longer if we don’t land him).

But maybe we’ll be lucky and Pope will prove me wrong by bringing in that guard after all.

I am assuming in this thread we get Momcilovic.

In that case, our offense looks to have the shooting and offensive firepower set. Offense from the beginning should not be an issue, and defensively, Pope is going to have to start off emphasizing defense and rebounding straight away. I don't think there is any debating that. We'll be much further ahead offensively just on talent alone, than we will be defensively.

We're going to absolutely NEED Malachi Moreno to become a much more central defensive presence, we're going to need him and big Franck both to hold their own inside and become rim protectors. Can that happen ? Are they capable? Maybe not to the degree we would want, but we have to see them be able to stand up physically to the punishing day in day out of SEC play.

McBride and N'Diaye will also have MASSIVE roles to fulfill while they are in there, and with the substitutions and lineup combinations Pope is going to have, he is going to have to push the right buttons to see it all through.

I'm carefully holding out and reserving judgement until I can see them play and see how Pope intends to utilize everyone, and how the defense and rebounding is. I have doubts we can get everyone to communicate and get on the same page early in the season.

So yes, defense and rebounding will be a primary issue to address. With a tough OOC schedule, we should learn quickly how well they can hold up over the long haul.

Bottom line : Coach Pope is still going to have to prove he can coach his *** off to get the most from this squad to enable him another season here. That's the cold hard truth of the matter.

A huge hill to climb.

I'm inclined to lean towards focusing on making sure the strengths are maxed out.

Make the offense sing like an elite chorus. Get the ball up the court quickly and get it moving with intention. Drive and kick, repost, force mismatches.

Then emphasize rebounding.

Make the length the bread and butter of the D. Just be long and in the way while blocking shots then rally like the devil is on your heels to the glass.

I just don't see many if any Rondo's, MKG's, or AD's showing up.
We look to be relatively stout at center and just tolerable at best on D otherwise but we will be pretty long and that is not nothing if leveraged correctly.

Assuming Mom is ours, this team has a chance to be ELECTRIC on offense. Moreno needs to take a step forward physically on the glass and we have to hope one of the hybrid 3/4s we have..(Hawthorne, Justin, Kam, ousmane) can at least be serviceable on the boards.

But this team on paper should outscore a lot of teams.

****** part about that is offense is only half the equation. We better score 100 plus because a mark Pope defense will get dog walked.

Honestly—mascot game. Scratch ain’t cutting it. Give him bigger claws and fangs and splatter blood on him like he just mauled a hiker.

defense will be a weakness but its always a weakness for Pope. But interior scoring wont be . Diallo is superb at scoring from the paint to the mid range, Wilkins gets to the rim and scores, and then McBride and Moreno are good scorers in the paint. Remains to be seen with rebounding, Diallo as a PG last year averaged 4rpg and we'll need Wilkins and Kam to use their athleticism to go get some more rebounds but they both average 2 a game which isnt bad, just up it to 3 and we're good , but if Mom is going to be our PF, we need the guards to rebound more.
