Bassett vs Shepherd up now

Shepherd continues to get in deep but finishing is a different matter

Bassett with the 10-0 tech. He is tough to slow down. With his pace he might actually kill a couple foreigners at worlds. They get tired wrestling most Americans but Bo goes at a different pace. I think there is going to be a lot of cold spray in his matches

Shepherd vs Bassett

Great shot by Shepherd by Bassett scrambles out of it. He then shots in and gets a takedown for a 2-0 lead. Back to standing at 5:14. Bassett shoots again and gets a leg and Shepherd forces a stalemate. Shepherd is in on a leg again off the restart and Bassett counters for a takedown and 4-0 lead. Shepherd fends off a leg lace attempt. 4-0 Bassett as they stand at 4:32. Bassett in on another leg and gets behind for a takedown and 6-0 lead. Standing again at 4:07. Bassett simply races around for a takedown off the restart for an 8-0 lead. Standing again at 3:45. Shepherd shoots but Bassett counters and scores the takedown to end it.

Bassett TF Shepherd 10-0 2:29. Bassett gets the U20 spot at 65kg.

74kg R2: James vs Lockett

We're underway. Lockett goes down awkwardly grabbing at his back at the 5:27 mark. No contact there. Looks like a cramp. I'm stating the obvious here, but the guys who went through the challenge tournament logically look exhausted so far. We'll see if that applies through the rest of this match It's back underway.

James is warned for passivity a minute in. He responds by shooting as Lockett's leg but can't get to it. James drops in on a low single and is trying to drive through it and only gets one for the step out as they go off the edge. It's 1-0 James at 4:00.

Back standing at center now. No more scoring. It's 1-0 James after one.

The second is underway. James had a front head lock but Lockett turns it into a counter and takedown for a 2-1 lead with 2:05 to wrestle. James tried to throw Lockett by and score but Lockett fends it off and it's a stalemate with 1:40 to go. James shoots but Lockett sprawls back and then circle in but James pushes him out to tie the match at 2-2 with 1:10 to go. Lockett leads on criteria due to the takedown. They're locked up with 50 seconds to wrestle. Lockett shoots and James catches him and has a leg and keeps driving for a takedown on the edge for a 4-2 lead with 32 seconds left.

They restart at 4-2 with :32 to go. Lock up in the middle of the mat. There's 18 to go. Now 10. Lockett shoots and James circles. That's the match.

Jayden James D. Ladarion Lockett 4-2 and is the U20 Team USA rep at 74kg

Incredible shot by James but Lockett somehow only gives up 1

1-0 at the break

Td Lockett off a sucker drag. 2-1. 2:00 left

Both guys showing incredible defense. James close to scoring but Dee defends and gets a stalemate. 2-1. 1:15 to go

Step out James. 2-2. I thought it should’ve been a td

James in deep off a counter and converts on the edge!!! 4-2

James wins 4-2!! Wow. What a match. This kid is something else

Ah, yes, the magical cold spray! If only it worked on anyone but exhausted foreign wrestlers it would go down as the greatest medical advancement in human history.

James may be the slickest guy on the team when he gets the chance to join it. That counter was 🤯
He really is so slick. The thing I’m most impressed with is his defense though. He gave Lockett absolutely nothing. His head/hands and down blocks were textbook. Put that defense with his slickness on offense and you have a very special wrestler. And to think he’s only 17 years old!

James making the U20 World team on his first try as a seventeen-year-old is impressive! This gives him the chance to be a multiple-time U20 World champion.

Thanks for reading/conversing/following along today. And a big shout-out to @zzs006 for the PBP!

I'll catch you all at U23s tomorrow at some point. I don't anticipate being around for most of the morning portion of things but should be back early in the afternoon.

Considering how big the brackets are, and the fact that preliminaries last for basically 12 hours, there's a decent chance I won't miss much. :ROFLMAO:

Have a good night, all.

This U20 team is shaping up to be very very good. Seidel, Bassett, Robideau, and James in a row is scary for the opposition. Add in Sinclair, Cortez, and probably Merrill. Burton has looked awesome also. I think 92 and 97 are probably our weaker weights but whoever ends up with the spot will be in contention. Boyle is very good even if 97kg was absolutely awful at the open and in the challenge bracket. Mastny is good as well but maybe not on the level of some of his teammates. I might be selling him a bit short but 92kg wasn’t a great weight

Super impressive especially him beating a guy trying to make his 3rd straight team and who is a world silver medalist at the U20 level. The jump that Jayden made in the past year is wild. Arrow straight up

Last year at this event, Lockett made James look........young. James had nothing and Lockett looked bored.

James has really improved........sometimes a loss does wonders for the soul. Lockett is a bit of a mystery. He started the collegiate year on fire, beating Caliendo and then seemed to flat line a bit. Still super talented but needs to widen his arsenal.

Ross wins 9-2 in match 2 to force a 3rd match.

After he timed the headbutts, suddenly Merrill has no offense and can’t control center. SHOCKER

Are Grey Burnett, Clinton Shepherd, and Jayden James all still eligible for U20s in 2027? I would assume so and I like the chances all 3 make the 2027 U20 team... ;)
