Agreed. Rutgers needs to do a better job of promoting themselves. It's hard to do it in the NY/Phili area as both are very much pro sports towns. I've always kidded with my friends saying Rutgers could win the Title in football or basketball and I'm not sure the NY papers and TV news would even cover it.

To an extent. Win and that can change. USC and even UCLA get airtime in Los Angles. But they win (maybe not for Football for UCLA recently, but other sports). Rutgers just has not consistently won to be a national discussion. In anything.

Not really. B1G top teams have more money from top to bottom. Alabama as an example will never win another NC with the current set up.

The SEC is still insanely talented and a better conference top to bottom. The big ten top 3 is better than the sec top 3 at the moment. That will ebb and flow like it always does. I can name 5 sec teams that can out recruit and spend every one in the big ten. Neither of those facts guarantees natties.

An advantage that SEC has is that the "SEC region" produces a lot of the best recruits and has often has stronger college fan base than NFL teams in area. Whole football programs have improved just switching focus to southeastern recruits.

NJ has great recruit base and strong HS football culture (2009-11 Bosco won or tied for national champions ) but institutionally/culturally Rutgers doesn't match SEC football vibe (or even elite B1G vibe). Sometimes I think RU football should promote itself more in line with the state's overall football culture. Like instead of vibing that Rutgers is "the birthplace" of college ball (which few care about outside the program) focusing instead that "Jersey is Football." That would resonate with much larger crowd and RU would automatically have its boat lifted in that tide.

Rutgers doesn’t match the NJ HS football culture, either.
Many kids from the parochial schools think they are better than going to Rutgers, and it would be a losing battle to base your recruiting on the idea that you are going to convince a lot of kids to stay home for college when many of them didn’t even stay home for HS and went to a parochial an hour away.

It was the correct long term strategy to go more national with the recruiting, Rutgers just needs that one season of getting some attention for being more than mediocre to break out.

Ten or so years ago when Rutgers played that series with Arkansas, all the talking heads said we wouldn't have a chance with all that SEC speed.

The B1G has a better media rights deal and graduates who earn more money than many of those SEC schools. The SEC had one advantage that led to their success- they knew how and were willing to bend rules as much as possible to win across the board.

Paying players is now legal. With that went their advantages. They can market themselves as "it just means more" and have as many girls twirling batons as they want, but it's just a money game now, and the B1G is simply better positioned. Coast to coast it's in the money centers and markets that few SEC teams will be able to consistently match.

You probably know Ron Rivera is the GM at Cal. They unloaded their head coach. Their new HC has experience at Alabama and Oregon. Would not be surprised if Cal makes a move to win the ACC championship.

You could probably list the "rich" schools in the SEC on one hand or so -- Vandy, the TX schools, probably a few others. There's a reason Saban bailed. Much easier in the BIG to list who doesn't have the bucks. The paradigm shifted when everyone can just buy a team, and as a result you get Texas Tech, Indiana, ect. And never going back to the way it was. Local talent is meaningless if you can't pay them competitively.
