I would not want us to do something like that to win games!*
But seriously, these are the teams you love to see go home.

Those oilmen are going all in on winning a national championship. They paid the pitcher $1MM. For softball!
It's really just a few. From @Rick Cleveland's article yesterday:

And, oh yes, there was the NIL deal, and this is where West Texas oil money comes into play. Tech offered a one-year, $1,050,024 contract (a million for Canady, $50,000 for living expenses, $24 for her jersey number). She apparently is a smart young lady. She took it. Who pays a cool million for a softball player, you ask? Billionaire couple John and Tracy Sellers, both former Texas Tech athletes, that’s who. John played football. Tracy played softball. They have donated millions upon millions to Tech, including to Canady’s NIL deal.
So I got curious about this and wanted to find out who these Sellers were. Well, well, he's the guy who sold a company along with Cody Campbell the football donor:

So, it really is a small group of people funding this stuff. Without these super rich, it's back to the collectives just trying to get by.

Even then, you still have to have a recruiting pitch. Tech was willing to allow Canady to hit and pitch, which Stanford did not do.

Doesn't matter. We won the right to play in the WCWS, not the 'Highest paid players in the nation WCWS'. They are who we thought they were.

It really is, So until one of you guys sells your business and/or all of your farmland for at least 5Bil, we may as well join conference USA.

or just pack it in.

Mississippi State sent me a thank you letter for not donating to NIL because they know all funds are being invested back into my multibillion dollar startup. They are appreciative that I’m playing the long game

As a lesson in how life works I set my grandson up this summer in a lawn business and am taking a cut of his earnings in return. Part of the deal is he has to do my yard for free as repayment plus some cash. I financed a mower, weedeater, blower, gas cans, and some miscellaneous small hand tools and supplies. Anybody want to buy me out?

The contracts he has picked up so far will cost you extra though, and BIG!

Texas Tech softball All Americans

2026: Four (new record)
2025 portal: Five signed and picked up

Signed the most expensive softball NIL deal ever, pitcher for $1.2M NIL (who we took back to back to the warning track and subsequently she exited the game)

At least they are getting what they paid for. Softball isn’t my thing, but if you pay top dollar you should get results.

Until this stuff somehow gets wrangled, you’re gonna see more and more of this. Lubbock is one of the worst places on the planet, but money talks.

Think about it. Red raiders are toast in football and men's basketball. WCWS is just to the north, and the women's final four is typically nearby and often in Dallas. (Except Oregon in 2030). Build their brand regionally with succuss in the lesser sports, focusing on top women's sports. It's a strategy, who knows how effective it'll be.
