It sounds like Sinner had heat stroke. Sinner is, in my opinion, one of the all time over achievers; the first time I ever saw him play I didn't think he'd ever win a major as he just didn't appear to have the required athleticism. But nobody told him...

He’ll be back but he needs to work on his game and his self for a second because he’s been dropping more games than I feel like he should

Edit: actually open checking he’s won every single game before this one since like January so I think he did actually have heat stroke

Never seen anything like that come apart...especially by a world #1 and an absolute overwhelming favorite to win the whole event. Lost at one point 18 straight points and then 18 of the last 20 games. It was purely a conditioning issue

He had a 30 match (it's match, not game) win streak until today

A+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Alcarez is maybe the fastest pro tennis player EVER and has a beautifully well rounded game. He can attack or defend, beat you at the net or drop shot you to death. If he improves his serve a little more he'll be practically unbeatable.

Alcaraz more natural talent but (at least until today) Sinner has been a cyborg. He absolutely wilted in the Paris heat
Yep. This appears to have been 100% a physical thing. He didn't have an actual heatstroke (he'd have ended up in the hospital if he did), but he was probably headed that way, and couldn't reverse it enough to maintain any decent level of play.

Sinner looks like a slow guy (pale white guys with red hair don't usually scream "speed"), but covers the court unbelievably well. But Alcaraz is the fastest player to ever play the game, and it's not even really a debate.

Sinner and his team are going to have to figure something out with his preparation. Is it something in his genetics that makes him more susceptible to cramping and having heat related issues?

Isner commented on that post match.

Wow!! Serving the match at 5-1 in the 3rd set and absolutely comes apart.

I’ve never seen him do that, if they took a bet on the winner of the match at that point you could have made a killing.

Idk about over achiever, he is a tremendous baseline player, he’s tall and he gets to a lot of balls guys can’t. Hard server like most these days. He’s smart.

He’s Nadal 2.0 without the injuries so far.

Young Nadal could have a claim. He got to more balls than any human ever. Not saying Alcaraz isn’t as fast because he is but they are close.

Did anyone see the 17 y/o French kid (Kouame?) that won a five-set, five hour match? People that don't follow the game closely have no clue what kind of physical condition these guys are in. Five hours in 92 degree heat is just insane.

Djokovich, when anyone says EVER, they are usually under 25-30. The young players have no idea what it takes to play 20-25 years tennis at Top 5 caliber. Ankles, knees, hips, feet shoulders and hands plus the hours everyday, the diet to stay healthy, plus knowing two years during COVId you were not allowed to play for bogus reasons. Djoky deserves one more title.

Yes, but there's a subtle difference. Nadal would get to everything but often hit kind of defensive shots. Really effective ones, especially on the forehand since he generated more topspin than anyone ever had before, but shots designed to just keep him in the point. Alcaraz gets to balls that make normal top 50 players have to lunge and gets to them so quickly that he's able to generate enough leverage to put the other guy on the defensive.

Yeah, Nadal was really good hitting forehands down the line being left handed like that. Most player are used to hitting to a right backhand and he would tee off on it. I agree though Alvarez is lightening fast and hits crazy shots.

I'm almost 70 and have been watching tennis for 60 years.
Almost all the guys who have won multiple slams have been very fast; if I had to rate them in pure speed I'd rate Alcarez #1 and Borg #2.
I'm rooting for Novak in this one.
Borg was a machine. If he never retired so early he may have won 20 slams. That was back when guys didn’t have over 10. Now we have three guys over 21 and two others who may get there eventually. It’s insane how dominate the top 2-3 players are now.

Novak goes down to the rising star Brazilian. Watch out for this kid! Now's your chance Zverev!

It's someone's chance. Only 6 guys have qualified for the final 16 so far, but now there's no one left who's ever won a major, and only 3 who've ever made a final, one of whom (Casper Ruud) looks like he's headed out.
