He used "whilst" and "reckon" in the interview. I guess his language lessons are going well.
Learning to speak like a Brit… AND like an Appalachian!

… maybe he can even pick up a Pennsylvania Dutch accent!

In all seriousness, quite impressive that he’s learning a foreign variation of the sport… AND, despite saying he doesn’t really like it, studying Philosophy… in a different language!

I never understood that subject in my OWN language!

Apparently neither does he (despite the excellent grade). I cackled at this one.

"
- Do you like studying Philosophy?

Ono:
Philosophy. No, I don’t really get it. (Ono scored a remarkable 3.74 CGPA in his last semester).

Grade inflation, Harvard was giving out "A" to 60 % of the students. They just made a policy to cap A's at 20%.

At both the high school and college level, GPAs up and standardized test scores down https://www.wsj.com/us-news/education/grade-inflation-education-test-scores-40196419.

At my nieces recent high school graduation there were 16 valedictorians, including my niece (who had very middling ACT score, is going to a state school you have never heard of). Sixteen kids with a perfect GPA. I'd guess this is probably similar to the anecdotes of others? My high school, almost three decades ago, with almost twice the number of students, had zero with a perfect GPA.

Does anyone know whether Ono answered the questions in Japanese or in English? In other words, I wonder whether we are reading a translation into English of Japanese .

The language certainly seems like a translation. Given that the tournament was a Japanese tournament in Japan for (mostly?) Japanese wrestlers. It would make sense for UWW to hire an interviewer to interview wrestlers in the Japanese language.

Yes, that was my initial thought.

Grade inflation? Harvard accepts the best students in the world. It is not unreasonable that a large percentage would earn A grades.
Naw. It was grade inflation for sure.

In 2005, A's were at 24%.

40% in 2015
60% in 2025

Give the faculty credit, they voted to fix the problem. They have a cap of 20%. There was worry that giving out such a high percentage of A's were devaluing the degree.

Harvard accepts some of the best students in the world, others get/got in with far less credentials but because of immutable characteristics.

What makes this argument moot is that Harvard has been one top universities on the planet since the late 19th century, there is undeniable data about the increase in A's beginning in the 2010s. From the data that I have seen, circa 2005, about 24% of grades at Harvard were A's. By 2020 it was 60%. Attempt to explain that away.

This is definitely not an elite U thing, it is everywhere. Large-scale data https://www.future-ed.org/grade-inflation-hits-high-school-math-hardest/ suggests there has been significant increases in overall GPA in high schools across the country since ~2010 while standardized test scores have dropped. There are now elite universities that offer a host of remedial courses. This is "equity" in the real world; everybody gets an "A" regardless of their work output.

Maybe just maybe people are better educated now.

Wait, what; since 2010? Undeniable data that standardized test scores have dropped while grades have gone up, but "better educated"? Many of these elite universities have started (since 2010s) offering remedial courses, for the first time in their history, for these incoming freshman with perfect GPAs. UC San Diego, the #6 ranked public school in the country did not even offer remedial math until a handful of years ago, now ~12.5% of incoming freshman are taking it and 40% of those taking it had perfect high school GPA https://www.forbes.com/sites/annaes...-eight-freshmen-lack-high-school-math-skills/.

Countless other data from individual universities and on a macro scale.

We had a kid who graduated valedictorian and an award as math student of the year. He couldn't do freshman calculus. A friend of mine tutored him in math his entire freshman year. The kid had all kind of intellectual talent, but his math grades in HS were falsely high.

I'm certain almost everybody with kids or in academia has similar anecdotes. I fall into both camps and have stories for days. Empirical data also provides significant evidence to back up what we are all seeing.

Not to derail this thread to talk about Ono, but is anyone a little skeptical as to whether Ono ever actually steps on the mat? Since he has been at Penn State how many times has he wrestled?

In the interview he mentioned having one year of eligibility. Might make sense to push it to next year, not sure they need him this season.

Selfishly, I’d like to see him in the lineup this year.

Not skeptical at all. There's absolutely no reason to rush him into folkstyle and then he also had the, not make weight, issue. Sounds like he put on the freshman (American) 30.

It has been many decades since I graduated HS, but I had to work my rear off to barely get Bs in adv trig, calc, chem, adv chem, and physics. In college I had to study those subjects a little, I got 1 B and the rest As and I know it was because I had to work to understand them in HS. Grades were earned, not given.

Over the years I have argued with people that it would be better for our kids if they got hard earned Bs and Cs as long as the school was well known for college prep. Most people have developed the opinion that it is better to inflate grades which allows their kids to look better on paper.

You’d think in a world of AI that a translation with any reasonable context would get a little closer to language we’re used to seeing …
So, you'd think, and I can't speak directly to the situation. But, it looked like the interview happened while action was ongoing, which means background noise including PA announcers, crowd, coaches, whistles, probably music, etc. We run into these issues sometimes, mostly with football, and even some pretty solid tools get very confused.
