Saw that The French Laundry was opening a burger place, complete with branding on the bun top. Hell. No. Burgers are best unfussy and with simple ingredients - I go ketchup, mustard, onion (occasional hot sauce), or lettuce, tomato, mayo (occasional hot sauce).

This is the French Laundry burger nightmare:

This is my favorite burger, again from Brighton Hot Dog Shoppe (who have been doing smashburgers since before anyone called them that):

Ketchup, mustard, and mayo? That sounds like a sloppy mess and a waste of meat.

No. Mustard.

American, mayo, fresh onion and fresh jalapeños is my default.

Will gladly accept blue cheese and grilled onions.

No version should be dripping crap off my elbows - it’s a handheld thing.

Perfect patty size is 6-7 oz. Less than 4, why bother? Greater than 8 and I’ll just have a steak.

Here and Now Smash burger Honesdale Pa. $10 on Wednesdays.
local beef, fried onions + Cooper cheese
comes with housemade pickles

Get em with a side of duck fat fries!
WOW.....wonderful atmosphere; brick walls, beautiful metal ceiling (wonder if it's the original), looks like the original wood flooring, sanded and varnished. If I were back in my "bar-fly days", this would be a great place to stop for shots and beer after a long day in the field.

Unfortunately, it's about an hour and 1/2 drive for me.

Thinking about taking a ride to Big Mike’s Steaks & Hoagies in Forksville and have lunch with my wife and our daughter who is visiting us from Alabama.
Seems to be a lot of homeless critters hanging around the store.

Have You Seen This Bear?
Forksville, PA — Police are on the lookout for a very carb-loaded suspect after a black bear was caught stealing a hoagie roll from Big Mike’s Steaks and Hoagies on the 200 block of Forksville.
Witnesses say the bear skipped the line, ignored the menu, and went straight for the Philly roll before making a clean getaway. “Didn’t even pay,” one customer noted. “And its face was caked with whiz!”
The suspect is described as furry, fluffy and possibly returning for a cheesesteak next time.
Authorities advise residents to keep food secured and report any sightings of suspicious sandwich activity.
If you see this bear, contact local authorities immediately — especially if it appears to be FORKED UP!

I have vague recollection of sometime in the 1980s/early 1990s, when a restaurant in Beverly Hills sold a hamburger for the unbelievable price of $10. It was national news.

Lower bun, kosciusko coase grain mustard, full slice onion, burger 1/3 lb, topped with Shuey hot peppers, and melted slice Jarlsburg cheese. Top of bun, and it's done.

Typically we grill the 80/20 meat to fat content mix of ground chuck and brisket from Heisler’s ( Wegmans has a version as well ) topped with Cheddar or Cooper, and sautéed onions and mushrooms. Brioche roll. Always delicious. ( Heinz’s Ketchup is allowed ).

it was cold this past Saturday so Tgar pulled out the Blackstone and made smashed/ pressed tacos with yellow American cheese, romaine, pickles and burger sauce. ( yes, the Tgar Instagram feed is full of easy to do nonsense ).

We throughly enjoyed them as a change of pace but our garage now stinks of grease and beef.

If you are near any of the few Max & Ermas left, they have $8 cheeseburger with fries and soft drink on Thursdays. Tough to find a better deal eating out.

I didn’t realize that they were still around. They closed their restaurants in the Detroit area when I lived there years ago. Sad because they made a good burger. The one near me was always busy too.

Dang, Max and Erma’s was our go-to Columbus eatery when our kids were young, along with Schmidt’s.

In Columbus Max and Erma’s kept their ice cream in a claw-footed bathtub.
