Years of sitting at a desk, sleeping wrong, etc my neck, shoulders, and upper back are pretty tight/locked up. I go to a massage therapist a couple times of a month but have never been adjusted and I'm wondering if going to a chiropractor could be valuable. Do you go currently to get adjusted? Does it offer any relief?

If I had back problems, I would go to an actual doctor and not a chiro.

When I went to my GP, they said go get a massage. I would assume a regular doctor is going to send you to a Specialist who will eventually get to nerve surgery. That seems aggressive for my needs

I go pretty regularly - it definitely helps with my ongoing sciatic nerve issue. I combine with PT and the combo keeps me mobile and able to excercise.

Definitely look for one that ONLY addresses back/spine/joint issues - mine for example has several times told me to got to a regular doc as my issue was beyond his expertise.

I have only gone a few times for some real rough neck issues. Each time I said I didn't want to do more than a follow up appointment, and each time I only went for 2 visits and everything was better by the 2nd visit.

The guy I went to in Coralville was great.

Once upon a time I was doing computer stuff in a chiro office and this old lady told her chiro that her GP thought the chiro was giving her too many x-ray scans. The chiro went off and called the doctor an idiot then assuaged the old lady's fears. I assume he probably followed that up with an x-ray.

When I was working at another chiropractor office, one of the chiros was peddling these silicone bracelets with a hologram on them. He was saying they helped focus the energy and helped balance. He would have them stand without a bracelet and jerk on them and knock them off balance. He would then put a bracelet on them and do the same to them but not knocked them off balance to show how the bracelet worked. He was selling the. For $45 dollars per silicone bracelet with hologram sticker. Some of the olds there were loading up on bracelets for their family.

I have worked with a lot of chiros over the years and I super dislike them. I now refuse to work on their computers.

There's this big boob chiro I watch on youtube sometimes. She does all the run of the mill adjusting and then she gets into this skin scraping stuff. Apparently supposed to increase bloodflow and remove toxins. Either way, looks like it prob feels good in the moment, and then you wake up the next day and it prob hurts like fucan hell.

Pretty sure chiros can also cure allergies with a couple cracks.

It's funny. There isn't a whole lot of great area in this topic. You either swear by them or they're witchcraft. You have a few like @AFM22 who are in the grey are but you don't find those people very often

Yeah, there are far, far too many quacks and charlatans in the profession. I will say this, when I had a severely broken ankle, the chiro did FAR more good for my recovery than either the orthopedist or podiatrist I also saw -- particularly in giving me at-home exercises, stretches and PT moves that sped the healing process. I've been seeing my guy since the early 2000s.

I'd say I'm in the gray area. I think those talking about curing asthma or helping avoid getting infections/colds are absolutely full of s.hit. But I have personally had a chiro help me with back spasms and joint issues that a "real" doctor did jack s.hit for and it worked. So even if it is placebo effect, I don't care - made s.hit stop hurting - so was worth it to me 🤷‍♂️

Even my guy is always pushing supplements and ointments and s.hit - I mostly ignore that advice - but have taken this stuff called ligaplex that if I skip it for a week or more, I notice my knees and hips are stiffer. Again, placebo effect? Maybe, but again, don't care.

The ones I am skeptical about are the chiros that adjust babies. Like, how do you know for sure a baby even needs an adjustment?

Yes, on a semi-regular basis. I feel like the adjustments always leave me feeling better and help any neck or back aches I might be having.

with that, as @Torbee has said, chiros have a purpose and I believe they can help CERTAIN ailments but you need to find one who “stays in their lane” far too many are snake oil salesman.

No. The first and only time I went, the "doctor" spent 5 minutes adjusting my back and 30 minutes explaining what chiropractic is and how it will prevent me from getting the flu or cancer. I finally had to just politely leave.

See that's weird to me. I'm glad I never had someone like that.

Mine explained what he was about to do, and why he was doing it. For example he said the reason why I was having pain in one area is because something was bothered in another area and the hurting muscles were trying to overcompensate.

But not anything weird like preventative care.

Mine was trying to explain how when you are not properly aligned, your nerves and blood flow and midichlorians and **** are not able to work at max efficiency, which affects overall health and immunity. He tried to tell me a minimum of one adjustment a week is recommended.

I simply wanted my back to not hurt anymore. I met with a physical therapist who did far more good for me than the chiro.

Here's the thing, 90% of chiropractors are quacks selling snake oil. But IIRC studies showed that they can actually provide benefit for lower back issues. When I first started working after college I started getting terrible lower back pain. Went to my Dr and he gave me some pills and sent me to an ortho. Ortho said I had a degenerative condition and it would only get worse and I'd eventually need surgery. Saw a chiro, he was a quack. Suffered for another couple of months and saw another chiro someone suggested. Dude had me feeling better in two weeks. Explained why I was in pain and what I could do to manage it.
Over the years whenever I moved I found a non-quack one for those times when by back flared up. My most recent good one closed her business and went to work for the VA. But I sit in good chairs these days and avoid all the things that used to trigger spasms so I'm ok.

My actual doctor told me to go to a chiropractor. I thought she was joking. I gave the guy 6 weeks, 3X per week and whatever he told me to do at home. Week 5 I was standing pain free. Still skeptical, but that one experience was positive.

Why would you be skeptical after that. There are lots of good chiropractors and they help a lot of people. Not an easy school program either.

Why? The office visits were kind of hokey. The one time he got out this clicker thing. Pressed it to my lower back and clicked it like a dozen times. I forget what it was supposed to do, but remember holding back a laugh at the time. I think the majority of healing / relief came through the in home exercise and stretching which is universally agreed on. Today you probably can watch a hundred YouTube videos on what to do for back pain.

Compression fracture of a lower vertebrae as a youngster (car accident) helped derail my MLB dreams, and also left me with lingering back issues (didn't help that I made a "comeback" later on).

Was told to go to a chiro post-accident. I did, for a couple years. Complete waste. But I kept going because I was fairly young and didn't know better. We didn't have the benefit of "Dr. Google" back then. Relief for a few moments, and then it would go back to the same ole same ole, or sometimes the "back gremlin" would settle in somewhere else and make it even worse. I learned to crack myself if I feel a motion restriction, and I now have no need for their short-term relief. You don't need to do the "fancy" stuff they do ... no need to risk hurting yourself. The only "trick" is to learn where the issue is .. often, if you have a muscle issue, and it's not a direct strain, the issue actually stems from another area.

What helped/cured? Lifting. Especially deadlifts. Heavy deadlifts (eventually) ... but never maxing (keep it to 4 rep as the lowest rep set). Sciatic problems? Gone. Lower back weakness? Mostly gone (would still appear when holding things away from my body for extended periods). Seems counterintuitive, and some will say they can't do that because their back hurts too much/is too weak. Push through ... it'll help. Or at least it did for me.

And deep tissue massage. I'll take one 90 minute deep tissue sesh over 3 months of chiro quackery.

Stretch your own neck ... that cures so many little/medium sized things in the rest of your back, it's amazeballs ... and if you do it enough, it appears to help longer-term. Lean your head to one side (or to the front), then take the palm of your hand and press and push your way from the base of your back neck muscle (your upper trap), up to the base of your skull. It hurts so good. Grab the back of your skull, at the base, with both hands and give a little upward jolt.

I think there are good chiros and the good ones are more like good physical therapists. A good physical therapist can do all the things a good chiro can do, that’s my understanding. The “adjustments” are fixing trigger points which PTs do and now that Dry Needling is getting more popular that would release the trigger point spasms then you can stretch AND strengthen the problem areas once the muscle is released from the spasm.

There is a reason every serious professional sports franchise - Premier League, NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL - on the globe employs chiros now. It works for aches/pains/inflammation/joints and soft tissue injuries. They allow them to work on their multimillion dollar investments to improve performance.
