Did Tom Davis get a statue when he was winningest coach? I've never heard that he did. If not, no statue for Fran, either. Both coaches were (at the time of their departures) the winningest AND losingest coaches in program history.
This is another great example of bad sports cliches and terminology that become part of the vernacular but aren't really accurate. "Winningest" is obviously the coach
that wins most frequently which is most accurately represented in winning
percentage. You really think a coach who is 95-85 is better than a guy who's 90-10 because he has more wins?
Another great one is "Defending National Champs". There's no such thing in seasonal sports. Every season is separate and independent from every other season. Everybody starts out 0-0. Boxing has a defending champ. Every time you step into the ring you're fighting to hold on to your belt.
