My own impression is that you can more easily load up the side cut buns with onions relish and the like.

The Dune Dog in Jupiter uses top slitted buns. Good enough for me. Best restaurant in town. Yuengling AND Birch Beer on tap.

Dune Dog Menu

I stand corrected.

My personal take on hot dogs.....

Traditional hot dog is the only way to go. That's on a hot dog bun with the condiments of your choice. Ketchup, mustard, onions, relish, chili, sauerkraut, etc. Whatever combination floats your boat. Do you like ketchup on a hot dog?? Go for it and don't let anyone tell you it's evil.

Any other wiener serving techniques make me gag. Focaccia hot dogs?? WTF is that?? Cut up and mixed into baked beans?? That's for kids under 10 years old. Corn dogs?? 🤮

And (in the voice of Frank Contanza) there's one more thing that bothers me about some of you people. Pigs in a blanket aren't wieners wrapped in some sort of gross pastry. I don't know who invented rolled up hot dogs and called them pigs in a blanket, but they need to have their asskicked. Pigs in a blanket is halupki. Or maybe that's just a western PA thing. I'd never heard of the "other" pigs in a blanket until I was about 30 years old.
I do recommend the spiral slicing of the hot dog. It really holds the condiments nicely.

The top cut buns are more gravitationally correct. You can load your weenie, pile on toppings and it won’t topple over.

Comparatively, side cut buns tend to be sliced such that there is less bread on the bottom side of the bun than the top (much like Meyers hoagie rolls, but I digress).

You load your weenie into the bun and then it falls over and all of your toppings fall off. It’s a mess if you put chili and/or onions on top.

I know Marshall is waiting for Franklin to make a choice before he decides which side to mock.
Humbled and honored to be ubiquitous in the heads of the BWICAC.
"A bun by any other name is still a bun," WS

"Sometimes a bun is just a bun," Freud

"Oh buns! How many wars were waged in thy name!", Pope

"Once you label my bun you negate my bun," Kierkegaard

"Real buns tell you the story of the hot dogs they belong too," Tolkien

"A bun is a bun is a bun," Thorndike
"is that a dagger I see before me?" You blocks, you stones, you worse than senseless things..." It's a damn hotdog bun.

It's an open air restaurant, so pick a nice day. Also never go at dinner time. Even in the summer, you'll wait in line. 3pm is the best time.

I think I have been there. A friend and his wife used to live in Jupiter and I remember them taking me there because they loved it.

No, not that one. We all decided a long time ago that ketchup goes on hot dogs.

The debate that we need to settle is side-cut or top-cut hot dog buns.

Ketchup doesn't go on hot dogs. This isn't Soviet-era Russia. We are not this sad and disgusting as a society.

Top-cut hot dog rolls are an option, only if the store is out of real hot dog buns.

A hot dog that extends beyond the bun is blasphemous.

Kayem Hot Dogs are the best dogs out there, and it's not even close.

A hot dog IS a sandwich, but it's also unique enough for that to be largely irrelevant. Like chili - it's technically a stew, but it's just chili.

Those buns are so very hard to find. Grill them with a little butter.

Not up here in Massachusetts. They're all over the place. They linger on store shelves, because even here, where the Irish palate has pretty much ruined most food, they know enough not to use top-sliced buns, unless there's no other option. The side-sliced and top-sliced options get about equal shelf space, but when it's cook-out time, the side-sliced are the first to go, and it's a serious consideration of "do I just skip hot dogs, or do I buy top-sliced and have to spend the rest of the day apologizing and explaining that the store only had top-sliced" if side-sliced aren't available.

Aligned dog & bun is ideal, but if there’s going to be a dog/bun length mismatch, “dog > bun” is vastly superior to “bun > dog”, blasphemy be damned (pun intended.)

I like both; more 'haute' dog places with fancier ingredients seem to use top cut, but IMO that makes for a bigger biting effort since those buns are usually not cut deep enough to allow for maximum bun coverage on the dog - it sticks up too much. Side cut with normal sized hot dogs allows for better bun to dog ratio and more ingredients that are better covered by the bun. The Brighton Hot Dog Shoppe in Beaver County (various locations), is side cut and my all time favorite.

That looks absolutely decadent, and it may force me to plan a road trip.

I only ever get it when I go home or if my Dad brings some chili when he visits. They have the perfect hot dog chili which is more a 'sauce' than a hearty chili. I also got into adding the malted vinegar to my chili/cheese fries when I was little and it just works. Their breakfasts are amazing too...big fan of the fresh cut home fries and chili topped omelette...

A plague on both your house and your wiener. Or something. If I wanted any bunless bites of meat, I'd just grill some kielbasa.

If the buns aren't big enough to take my full wiener, I don't want any.

Now, back to the topic of hot dogs ...

While we're on the subject of hot dogs, if you're ever in the Pittsburgh area, Jim's Hot Dogs in West Mifflin is as good as it gets.

Order them with sauce and onions. The sauce is a zesty brown sauce, and after they put the sauce and onions on they put the dog under a broiler for a minute to toast everything.

Chef's kiss.
