The problem with that theory is the money it takes to change head coaches. Yeah I know, empty seats cost a lot of money too but then you’re just adding to the financial pain. The businessman in me says that we’re stuck and have to bide our time. The extension probably bought Rhule 2 more years. Even then, you’re probably looking at hiring a no name staff if you fire Rhule in 2 years. The original package we gave him was a lot but millions of that was paid by his former team. The other extension is all ours😕

I’ve been preaching for at least 5 years that we don’t have the depth of alumni financial support that some of the other B1G schools not to mention the SEC. IMO, we’re screwed as far as football goes.
As far as I can tell NU receives 80 million in donations, that is pure profit. Their profit is far smaller from tickets, and they receive a bunch from the big 10 in revenue sharing. Losing 25% of your donations for the next four years because Rhule sucks is 80 million dollars. Also, Rhule isn't going to sit at home for 6 years, NU won't pay the full buyout, and they can defer a lot of the payments in different ways over a longer period of time. If the season goes how we think, Rhule will be fired, mainly because he was blown out in his last three games, will be blown out many times this upcoming season, will be like 0-67 against ranked teams. And will be like 4-11 in his last 15 games once the season is over. From a local viewpoint the extension was stupid, but these types of extensions are extremely common in year 3-4...coaches can't recruit when their contact ends during a players career...at least that is their story.

Pretty pessimistic. I just don't know the numbers, but a four win season in year four would be hard to survive, especially with maybe two conference wins. Thanks for the cheerful thoughts.

It is kinda crazy how people tend to set their own bar for what’s good enough at whichever coach they like. And that bar keeps getting lowered for a lot of fans.
I agree. A lot of it is timing too I think.

Solich obviously had the shortest leash based on what he had to follow. Pelini had a decent leash based on who he followed, but expectations were still on the higher end and with no conference championships + no Top 10 finishes (and acting like a loon) he had to go.

Frost had forever. Being a former player & losing close games gave him more time than he deserved.

Rhule wont last past year 5 (or at least he shouldn't) if the best he can muster 7-6 or even 8-5.

IMO if Rhule gets past year 4, he needs to get to 10 wins, minimum, in year 5 to keep his job.

No AD in his right mind would fire Rhule if he wins 9 games next year.

But…but…but we’re going to meaningless bowls. It’s been 10 years since we were that wildly successful. Haven’t you heard?

Read the post I replied to.

I did. Sorry I think we’re confusing “next” and “this.” I thought you meant next year as in year 4. I guess that’s technically this year now and next year is year 5.

Anyhoo, yeah I’m sure he keeps his job with 9 wins in year 5 if he makes it past year 4.

Ohio WIN
Bowling Green WIN
North Dakota WIN

Have to win 2 out of 3 against Michigan State, Maryland, Rutgers. So we SHOULD win 5. But it is easily within realm of possibility to win 4. Of course, blowouts and stuff will matter. If we are competitive against good teams Rhule might get another crack at it next year. We are a mountain west team, literally.

Funny, everyone talks about how hard this schedule is. Well, not if your goal is just another meaningless bowl. Which it may just be based on what we’re seeing/hearing lately. All you need is 6 wins (or possibly even 5) and that’s one of the easiest schedules ever.
