Week four of our race season is completed.........we flew a 300 mile race Sunday.......I had three birds place in the premiums......I got 1st, 18th and 19th places......I have won every 300 mile race I have ever flown with this club.......my bird came in 5 hrs. 40 minutes.....the next bird was 2:03 minutes behind...........I will probably skip the next race (185) an focus on the 400 mile race in two weeks.........we fly our version of the KY Derby......we take the best average speed from 300, 400, & 500 mile race.........winning the first race puts me in the driver's seat.....I just need birds to get home in good time on the next two races.......hope remains eternal....no money involved just bragging rights and a nice plaque with results of the three races.....
Mr. Pidgie, I have a question, do you or other racers lose any of your birds during a race?

Yes sir. Some races the loses are very high. We sent over 1,200 birds on a race last year and there were only 62 birds home on the day......One of my goals is to have a high percentage of returns. I had 17 of 25 that came home on this 300 mile race. Probably by the end of the week it will be 20-22 of 25. Sometimes they get turned around and confused. I had a bird circle around Smith's Grove for two days before coming home. It never got more than three miles from where I released them. With GPS we are starting to get a glimpse of where they go. I hope to live long enough for them to develop GPS that have live telemetry. I would be stuck at the screen watching them fly home......I have chased this mystery for over 65 years......Oh, by the way......it's Pidgie to you folks.....no Mr. needed.....it doesn't fit with my bib overalls..... ;)

Hello All,

I am leaving shortly for what I hope puts the busy in my retirement on the downturn... Been a serious lot of work for over six months....

If the Lord doesn't take me home I should be back in a couple hours as My Darling is heading to a bible study of sorts with her friends. I have my appointment then a store stop or two for the BB and then hope to EXHALE "bigly"...

I DO hope this day brings you easy breathing!

HELLO AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe, just maybe my retirement will take on some new meaning now... (I will ALWAYS stay busy but not the way I have been....) We shall see but I hope today was the last nail finishing a HUGE item concerning retiring..... (More than just the job to retire when you burn the candle at both ends in your work life for so very long...) I've been a 16 hour a day man since I cannot remember (Well over 40 years...)... Hard to just turn that off... Had to prepare many many areas to "let me go..." Note: I AM thankful but ready to focus on my family and other's I come in contact with..... Also hoping to meet an "old" friend for the first time. If I can make that work, I will!!!

Enjoy the rest of your day...

Morning D-Legionnaires!

61° with light winds and rain in the air. Rain chances all day until around 6pm. Still need it here so, we will take it. Just hope it is moderate and not a gully washer at some point. The steady and not heavy rain keeps my shop from getting the floor wet. Suppose to rain off and on for the next 3 days. Probably flood the softball fields and cancel this weekend's softball games. We will see.

Not much going on today with the rain possibilities. Will walk the monster shortly as there will be a break in the rain according to the radar.

Last day of school here was Tuesday so dogs were barking late last night because neighbor kids (older ones) were out and about with their friends running around. That will go on for the summer. Have two of high school age right next door. 5 Marine officers on the other side of me renting a house who are here for artillery training at Ft. Sill who will probably be partying on the weekends. Could be a long summer for my wife.

Well, you folks enjoy your day and God Bless.

Good morning folks. Another day in DC. Gonna be a hot one. I like to get to my office early in the summer. I’m near Pennsylvania Avenue, about half way between The Capitol and White House, and surrounded by museums (my subway stop is called Gallery Place) so tourists abound. Last night a couple buddies and I went to get a beer at a nearby restaurant, thinking it’s be quiet on Wednesday night, and there was a line of about 50 teenagers and their chaperones from Wisconsin standing in line, trying to get seated en masse. The National Guard presence has kept a lot of the bums away, so that’s a plus.

Pulling into the station. You all stay cool.

We must have worked close to each other when I was in the South Building at USDA for over five years. (Many of those are getting or have been dispearsed now...) A friend I had that used to work for me is still there though... He may be made to move but he is not sure yet.

Hello All,

Been at it this morning, woke up just after 8. Made a pot of coffee and took care of some regular items and have been dotting I's and crossing T's with paperwork I have had piled on my desk. My Darling made me some fruit and yogart "stuff" but if her finger touches it, it tastes good and I haven't taken a bite yet. Heck, my coffee went cold sitting next to me. Had to nuke it.

After I finish this, I will start on the inside today de-dusting for My Darling. When that is done, I may have other "work" items to do but those should be finalizations stuff and nothing going forward.

I AM thankful... Take today and hug it, love it, and share it with those you love....

As a nation and as individuals, we often fail to realize how good we have it in the USA. We often don't realize what life is like in other parts of the world, how precious life is and how it can be taken from you in an instant.

Yes Sir,

I totally agree. I NEVER will forget that. Been to several places and came to realize that early as I know you have much more expertise in this area. I AM thankful!

Good afternoon folks. Gloomy and rainy in the east. Grinding out the last work day of the week, attending to routine tasks.

We were supposed to have a small cookout on Sunday, but it looks like rain all day. Blah.

My wife has been called away to provide some critical nursing care for her step-father, battling Parkinson's, a brain tumor (apparently benighn, but still capable of causing lots of problems) and other maladies. Man, we can't catch a break with the health of our elders, not surprising as my wife is 62 and I'm 70. We've been blessed to have that generation around and in. good health as long as we did.

Wishing a good day and a restful long weekend for all of you.

Hello All,

Yeah, I completed all of what was required/ needed to "Slow....me....down!" Took the BB to school this morning so his Mom could attend a gym class she likes. THEN I went to my oldest daughters house and changed some toilet guts for one toilet. I had a couple calls for other things and also with the initial leasing process for my one house, and also am having a dishwasher installed at my other house in SC. Just yeah, a day in the life....

I AM thankful though to no end.... Just too many good things for me to complain...

Our pool opens tomorrow BUT too cold for me and the BB to hit it though we may walk down the street to "Case the joint"... He's a good boy.... I am looking forward to the swimming season with him as we have good times together.

Take this wet day and use it for sunshine...There IS plenty of sunshine in any event. ;)

Happy Saturday folks. Being lazy this morning. But I'm about to brave the light rain for my Saturday hike.

Glad to see the Bert memories in the thread. I enjoyed talking with him about the Civil War ancestors we each had, his time in the state where I now live, Maryland, and his C&O Railroad memories (CSX) as someone who grew up in a tiny town built around a C&O switchyard.

Heading out. Enjoy the day.

Md, I recall the old Green Line buses with a "STEVENS" header back in the day.

Yeah, the locals in the Grove called that the Jitney. Stevens Yard was the name of the switchyard, named after a C&O executive from the early years of the 20th Century. The town was called Stevens until around 1910 or so, when they changed the name to reflect the groves of silver maple trees in the area. My parents house was built in about 1906, and was apparently one of the first four houses built for railroad executives or administrators.

Wiedemann was a Reds' sponsor. Here's an artifact from the good old days: A Crosley Field Scorecard from 1968 —the core of the Big Red Machine before they’d earned that name. If you look close enough, you can see autographs of Pete Rose (upside down starting at left edge) Johnny Bench (just to the left of Rose) and Tony Perez (hard to see, but the T is near the knee of Rose in the photo.) A few others too, like Clay Carroll and Hal McRae...I've held onto it ever since the day I got the autographs as a 12-year-old boy.

That's not bad at all if you expand it. Sounds like a great memory. Wiedemann beer. Do they still make that?
Production by G. Heileman stopped a good while back. A local small craft brewery picked up the name maybe 10 years ago. What they make today tastes different to me - meaning not as good as my memory says it was. But who knows.

Cardinal fan here, but I followed several Reds players over the years. One was a guy known as the Professor. He also played for the Cards. My first in person game was at Sportsmanship ParK. Jim Brosnan an was warming up in the bullpen and the crowd was sparse. You could really hear the ball pop when it hit the catchers mitt. Impressed the heck out of me as a kid. He wrote several books. The Long Season made the White Sox put in his contract that he was forbidden to write anymore books. He retired instead and wrote pieces for several major magazines.

Hello All,

We missed church today. We went down to one service and just missed it. Not thankful about that but it happened.

Taking it easy. It is not raining now but as MdW stated it has rained and rained and rained here. The BB can't swin and I was so hoping we could hit the pool but just too cold her to even think about it....

Will try tackling some paperwork today to get that pile down to a hill's worth. It seems the last mountain so I am not complaining..

Enjoy your day(s) today. Make it something good... You can do it.

Good morning everyone.

I was sure glad to see Moreno drop out of the draft and come back to UK. If we get the other M&M brother we'll be tough to handle.

It's sure nice to read your all's baseball memories. I was a huge Reds fan in the Big Red Machine years. The Reds and the KY Colonels kept me from being a big UK fan until about 77.

I've been busy doing my usual spring things.....fishing, hiking, trail maintenance work (building a new section of hiking trail), and weedeating.....never finished with that.

Time to scan through RR and see if everyone (anyone) is more upbeat w/ Moreno's return.

Have a good one.

Happy Memorial Day!

I hope all is well with you folks and you can relax on this day (if that's what you want to do).

2 co-ed softball games yesterday and we won both of them. Sitting at 10-0 for the season with about 4 games left. There is another team sitting at 10-0 as well and we will not play them in the regular season because there are too many teams in the league (says Lawton) so, we will probably meet in the end of season tournament. If the tourney started today, we would be the overall #1 seed because we have scored more runs than them. That team also has the son of one of the guys I played ball with many years ago.

We had a big lead in our second game yesterday so, I tried to go yard (mostly base hits for me) in my last at bat. Warning track power left it short. It looked originally like it was going but fell short.

Had a guy from another team come and ask me if I would like to go with him and his team to a men's senior's national tournament in Colorado next month. I thanked him but told him no, did not really want to travel that far to play ball. I Used to when I was younger, but I am content with just beer league ball these days.

Well, I will send this to my publisher and get it out to you folks shortly so...

GOD Bless and enjoy the day.
