I will first start off by saying I am definitely a Dolph and Bobby fan! But Gary will be 75 next season, and in his 30th season.

With basketball being the faster paced game, vs football. Would it not be a good idea to "test the waters" with a few different announcers splitting the season to see who the fans really like? Say give 3 or so potential candidates an equal split on the season? Or is that far fetched...?

It may not be possible, as other announcers may be jeopardizing their current positions...or not

Dang. There were 62 applicants for the "Voice of the Hawkeyes" back in December 1996! Might be tough to do.

Just a thought.

Wy would any school want to let the fans pick the announcer? Just asking because I hate gimmisks and this would be one and oh yeah, what fan thinks they're entitled to choose any University employee, Next thing you know they will want to be involved in the hiring of the Dorm Monitors.

My #1 choice would be Adam Bennetti, who does Detroit tiger baseball after leaving white Sox and does every sport in off season. He is the best...an unlikely candidate, tho, as he would have his pick of gigs if he ever hit the market.

Realistically, Dolph leaving would create a big void as he certainly has many responsibilities in his current role. Almost a face of Iowa sports role....need a special guy who is professional broadcaster as well as bleeding black and gold willing to come to Carroll county I club gatherings in summertime.

I personally would volunteer but not a professional broadcaster....as a kid I wanted to be zabel.

Bennetti is great but how can you broadcast Tiger's games in Sept and also broadcast Iowa games? I guess the tiger's might let him do the Iowa games.

Unfortunately, Iowa going to the single media rights model for broadcasting games on radio has totally left fans and the Univ with any proven talents that have also been following hawk athletics. Now some connected hawks have been doing BTN games and I wonder if any of them would be good enough to be #1 play by play person.

And really when it is time to replace Dolph without him retiring then do it for all sports. Does Dave Revsin or others have Iowa connections

Would former Iowa QB and longtime announcer and play by play guy Paul Burmeister ever want this job?
Or is there a younger top radio guy.

Zach Mackey. Not sure he’s ”top,” but good enough and checks all of the Hawkeye boxes.

It would not be the fans. It would be the athletic department.

Jess is a color guy analyst and I dont think he has ever done play by play and not sure if he is smooth enough or has the voice. Maybe and if he gets the job I am behind him
I could see him potentially taking the color role from Bobby (or at least being offered). My guess is Bobby is gonna stick around until Dolph calls it quits, as long as his health holds up.

He is harder to listen to than Dick Vitale, and that takes effort.
I enjoy his commentary….. that’s why I mentioned him obviously….. I’m an old wrestler so the game if basketball isn’t really my thing…… I watch both Iowa programs and the fever……. I enjoy Jess because he’s as Iowa as it gets…… each their own

His name is Jason, and no he wouldn't take an Iowa basketball or football radio gig.

I enjoy him too. Especially when he gets a little spicy.

Technically I believe Learfield picks and the university gets to 'approve'
Possibly. But my money is on Beth Goetz getting her person, and then Learfield approves... I would wager on that. She has more cajones than any AD or Exec out there.

Beth is the best in the biz. And she is on OUR team. Love that!

I hope they do better with this choice than they did with the "color analyst" for football. Love Pat Angerer as a Hawkeye football player and his dedication to and support of Brett Greenwood is beyond words. He's one hell of a human being.

Not a great radio guy.
