That video is a prime example of why I hope Trent plays out his career here. He could hunt minutes at a smaller school (where he would likely play a significant amount), but hopefully he develops here and sees it through until senior day because regardless of production, he should be met with some loud applause

Trent will never be anywhere close to the level that Pelphrey was. However, the kid is going to make a s*** ton of money and still gets to wear the blue and white.

In this day and age, players don't care about loud applause.

Don't remember if this was posted before. Anyway get the tissues ready.

I didn't think that would get me but it did. Unless you were around before that era, to go through what the program and fans went through, you'd never understand it fully. My favorite UK team and it's not even close. My God, it's been close to 40 years! and my love for this team keeps growing if that was even possible.

I remember back in the day when Dick Enberg and Al McQuire were announcing a Kentucky senior day game and both started tearing up with Dick Enberg saying it was one of the most powerful moments he's ever witnessed.

Wish we would hire John for a role with our bball program. His passion for UK is unmatched. Was such hard worker who really developed his skills and tenacity at UK. Leader. Tough as nails player. He would really bring that old school UK grit into the program.

We don't anymore "old school UK" to the program. There's enough of that with the current head coach.

Typical uniformed response.

Exactly what we do need. Pope and Pel aren’t alike. Pope was here a couple years. John grew up here. He can express what UK is all about. The hard work it takes. Toughness. Relatability.

Need guys like John and Keightley(rip) in the program. Legends. Traditional. Respect.
Would be terrific in an AD Min spot. Also knows bball top to bottom. Would be very helpful.

Typical out of touch response.

In 2026, fans are the only ones that care about that stuff. Do you think players take it seriously when Mark Pope talks about the UK jersey as a "sacred cloth"? Today it's money, the coach, and NBA preparation.

Just don’t understand the UK bball experience.

The UK tradition still matters to many players. Moreno and Oweh got all the above. Those are the kind of guys we need and they get more out of being a UK player than most other players.

Good stuff. Wasn’t it him who tried to change his accent and sound more northern?

Moreno is from the state, grew up a fan, and was paid handsomely. Do you think Otega Oweh didn't get a huge slice of the $22 million pie last year? If he or Moreno get a first round pick guarantee then they are both gone after their first year in Lexington.

Regardless, the program only succeeds because of the quality of players and coaches. It has nothing to do with the players' appreciation of the tradition. The tradition means nothing if the program isn't winning.

Do you not think that the players need someone else, other than the head coach explaining to them what the tradition means? The biggest fanbase shows them that, as well as the random former UK players showing up to their practice.

Pelphrey is just another flamed out head coach that brings nothing but nostalgia to a program that is already struggling because it hired a head coach that brings nothing but nostalgia.

New wave UK fan.
Behind UK “win or win”
Tradition doesn’t matter.
Not much appreciation for those who helped build it.

I think it’s great to have that type passion around the program. Think he’d be great in an Admin position

Yeah kids today are all about the "tradition" and "playing for the name on the front." 🙄

I'm not a "new wave UK fan". I'm just a realist that isn't stuck in the past. If you want this program to succeed then you need to hire with your head and not your heart. Constantly looking back won't help you move forward.

Now that most top schools are paying most of their players each at LEAST six figures, tradition hardly matters. The blue blood status doesn't have the same appeal that it used to. The UNC coaching search was a good indicator for that. As a UK fan it's a tough pill to swallow, but it is what it is.

In regards to "appreciation for those who helped build it", Pelphrey has his jersey in the rafters and has been the "Y" at least once. He shouldn't get a job just because he played here.

UK currently has a head coach that hasn't done a lot and two assistants that flamed out as head coaches. Adding another failed head coach to the staff reeks of a John Calipari coaching staff, but without the elite recruiting experience.
