Any physicians here that can diagnose that? Such a tragic loss
There are only a few things that are going to kill you as quickly as it did him at 41 years old. A heart attack, which is unlikely at his age. And an MI shouldn’t cause you to cough up blood. A brain bleed, although obviously that isn’t going to make you cough up blood. The most likely would be a pulmonary embolism. Having a clot break loose from a vein in his leg and lodging in his pulmonary arteries. That can definitely cause you to cough up blood.

I keep hearing pneumonia. That’s not impossible, but he would have to have been in really, really bad shape when he first got to the hospital to die that quickly

If you consider that his job requires sitting in very tight quarters for long periods of time, it seems very plausible that a clot could have formed in his leg and gotten to his lungs.

Talking with my nurses at work, we all lean toward a PE. A PE can literally make you ‘drop dead’. I’m kind surprised DVT risk isn’t talked about more with NASCAR.
If not a PE, I would have to guess ‘spontaneous dental implosion’.

Welp. I was wrong. Family is saying it was severe pneumonia and sepsis. That means that he was an ungodly bad shape when he got there. For him to die within 24 hours of admission to the hospital with pneumonia at 41 years old is insane. I suspect EMS try to take him to the hospital today before, but he refused. He almost certainly had been ignoring symptoms for a prolonged period of time. We will never get the whole story, but the doctor in me really, really wants to hear everything that happened.

They say he had a overwhelming sepsis, which means he was in multi system organ failure. Usually, when you get that severe, nothing is working correctly, including your kidneys, your heart, your lungs, your blood vessels, even your blood. That doesn’t happen in a moment. I have definitely seen people come in that sick before, but they are usually in their 70s and 80s with comorbid conditions not 41 and reportedly healthy. Like I said, I wish I could get the whole story.

if he cardiac arrested outside of the hospital because of it the story makes a lot more sense

I could see a guy at his level of success in a sport that rewards toughness and aggressiveness being hardheaded about whether he's sick enough to go to the hospital or not.

Looks like it may have cost him his life. Feels like this was treatable if he'd gotten earlier comprehensive care.

It really can. My dad was in hospital after surgery & had one. Literally told my mom call the nurse I’m having trouble breathing & then immediately was unresponsive. Held on for maybe another 12 hours but was unresponsive the whole time.

Trying to be the tough guy or the hero is stupid. Listen to what your body is telling you. If something not right get it checked out.

Definitely, although I feel like this is a growing issue with men in general. It keeps getting labeled as fear of doctors, and it probably is that for some, but I also think that men are hard wired from an early age to put school/work/family above all else, and we gradually start believing that there’s just no time for doctors because someone needs us or else the money could be better spent elsewhere.

It feels dumb to type that out because you sure can’t support your family when you’re gone, but I genuinely believe that a huge portion of men that feel this way.
