I know this is hard for some of you to grasp, but NBA teams at the bottom of the first round aren’t drafting for who can help them tomorrow. They’re drafting for potential and ROI.

Late‑first teams are contenders. They don’t need a polished 22‑year‑old to give them 7 minutes in January. They need a cheap, controllable upside swing who might become a rotation piece in two years. That’s why they’ll take a raw 19‑year‑old now rather than pay twice as much for him next year when he’s more developed.

That’s how the league works. It’s about upside, projection, and long‑term value, not whatever box score you’re clinging to from January.

Hope that clears things up for those still trying to connect the dots.

Note: ROI is ‘return on investment’. It means: “If I put X in, how much more than X do I get back?”

I think the vast majority of people have a firm grasp on this.

Here! Maybe this will help!

I just don't believe, for a second, any of this. Fans are looking for something to wring their hands over. He'll be here next season. Stop. Relax.

When you sign a contract you don't have leverage . You have options. Go pro or come back.

You're locked in buddy. Pope has the leverage on this one fellas. Not Moreno.

So you managed to get yourself banned yet again?
They wanted me banned. I was going to get banned. If I don't want to get banned it's easy i can just have the same status quo post like most. I can just say yea tied for 7th is great baby! Keep up the good work Pope!

But no I'll choose ban Everytime because what's the point? Ban me but here I am. Suprise. Quite odd.

I would like to know what got me banned tho. Only thing I can think of was saying something gay on the gay thread. But why isn't everyone that posted something gay banned?

They in fact can out ***** me. I forget this is a Matt Jones and hang my tits out Ryan lemonds site. I'm sure Saul smith stole his girl. Blew her guts out then sent her back to him the next night before hitting the strip club.

I understand your valid point, of course, but if Pope feels like Moreno is a huge key to having a competitive team, is it unthinkable that a renegotiation could possibly take place ??

It can take place if Pope allows it. All the leverage is in Popes hands. Why's that so hard to understand?

I get what y'all are saying. Have been saying. But he really doesn't have any leverage.

Y'all are making it sound like he's using a lottery to gain leverage. He's not a high draft pick. He would have to have a better situation in the NBA to have leverage. He's not in a better situation if he leaves. UK IS THE BETTER SITUATION FOR HIM.

he has no leverage. Pope can be nice and renegotiate if he wants to. But that's isn't leverage.

I'm not arguing, but the possible "leverage" I see is simply the perception that we simply HAVE to have him to be successful. I can see Pope calling him to talk ... that's all. GOOD LUCK to Moreno in whatever he decides.

Use the Tennessee QB last year as a example. That was some good leverage wasn't it? Shows the coach has the choice to play them games or not. He didn't have leverage. He played himself into a worse situation.

I expect Pope to be held hostage tho and end up with a mediocre roster year after year

in the category of what ever it’s worth, Inwas with a good friend from Lexington this weekend who is close to Morenos brother. he told me his brother has significant influence over Malachi. He believes MM is coming back. he also thinks he will ask for more money to do so.
could be nothing or it could mean MM gets a slight pay bump and returns.

Some troll on here must be hitting up all the public libraries, and going computer to computer using different IP addresses!

Id say, the dude needs to get laid, but that’s probably the sole reason why he has nothing better to do than to troll nonstop on here😂🤣

^^^This...Seems like someone--me--has been saying this for days now. Several of you came to the same conclusion as me but others thought my take was completely wrong. Well...now KSR (and others) have arrived at the same conclusion as me. Here is their article headline posted just moments ago:

"Malachi Moreno has plenty of leverage ahead of NBA Draft withdrawl deadline"

In a 45-minute sitdown on The Assist with Kyle Tucker from Monday, CBS Sports writer Isaac Trotter went over plenty of post-NBA Draft Combine headlines with Tucker. Some believe that means he has a promise from an NBA team and is going pro. Others, including Trotter, see this as a leverage play by his agency, one that could net Moreno more money from Kentucky when all is said and done.

Hey Moreno I'm sorry to tell you once you sign a contract you don't have leverage anymore..

You have two options. Go pro for what they give you or come back to Kentucky for what they give you. But you will have contracts in the future and I hope you learn a lesson and use leverage before you sign a contract.

Just because ksr says leverage....isn't this a Matt Jones ksr forum?? So just because KSR says he has leverage doesn't mean he does.smh.

Obviously some ksr members are posters here. Use that leverage before you sign your next contract buddy.

Pope if you don't give me more money I'll go pro and continue the UK legacy of one and dones. I'll show the world you made a mediocre player turn into a first round draft pick. I promise I'll make you look good if you don't give me what I want.

Leverage my *** lol. Y'all are crazy. Leverage before ink on paper. Not ink on paper then leverage.

That's why I made sure to get confirmation about him signing a contract before I took my stance.

Remains he has no leverage. Ksr has been off on about 99 percent of information they fed us for two years. They don't know anymore than us.

A week from now we will have the final conclusion/answer from Moreno. He is/will use his NBA leverage and--I predict--Pope will "pony up" more cash. Moreno's recently signed contract means nothing--Pope will have to pay more or risk losing him to the NBA((whether he's ready for the NBA or not)--a risk Pope cannot afford to take as a coach on the hot seat.

We seem to forget how bad MM conditioning and stamina is And how he cannot shoot from 3 and how he his rebounding is done with one hand . the abive the rim game not great either.
His quality is passing and on the ground around the rim player. If he would played 5 on 5 he would just exposed. his brother and agent are not stupid and rightly so advised him not to participate.

as far as financial leverage, I don’t think it really matters after the last 20 million spend.

I don't have any clue how much is available. If there is enough to give Moreno more and still be able to lure Momcilovic then that would seem to be the logical move but if money is tight then Moreno may be out of luck trying to get more.

Moreno obviously has a lot of leverage on the fact the UK needs a starting center, and we would be left with a major hole in the roster if he doesn't come back.

At this point on this thread, If you are arguing with anyone who doesn't see it that way, you are wasting your time and energy with an obvious troll

He for sure met with the Lakers earlier this week. There was a post online showing Mo Williams and Mark Fox there watching/supporting him. Not sure who else he has met with beside the Lakers and the Knicks.

He "worked out" in front of all 30 NBA teams in Los Angeles on Tuesday at the GSL Pro Day. According to Yahoo sports article on it, he met with the Lakers and the Celtics after. The only specific individual workout mentioned is the Knicks.

Thanks. Any follow up chatter on how that went?
Not really. Mostly just speculation. Moreno wants a 1st round guarantee and nobody seems to be giving him one. At least not any team that has said so publicly. Pretty consensus evaluation that he is a late first round to mid second round pick if he stays but a lot of the teams picking in that area don't "need" a development Center taking up a roster spot. I've seen people like Goodman and Norlander say he'd get drafted on potential and size but likely stored away on a two way contract. Goodman even thinks that teams picking where Moreno evaluates out at won't give him that guarantee because of the situation where a better player(s) fall down the board because of health issues, off the court issues, things that make teams pause on taking them earlier. And they won't promise Moreno (or a lot of the guys in that range) because what if Koa Peat or Keaton Wagler or a Heinz Steinback type player falls and is available in the mid to late 20's. Are you going to draft Moreno as a GM and pass up on those guys? It seems like most NBA GM's think he should go back to school, and there are a couple who would love for him to stay in and grab him in the second round. Who knows though. As fans we just have to sit on our hands and wait.

Moreno started all season as a freshman big and hit the "freshman wall" and experienced conditioning and stamina issues late in the season, this is not uncommon for freshman bigs especially with a heavy workload, again he started all season.
NBA teams view strength and conditioning issues in college centers as highly correctable and not a red flag.

I don’t know if he worked out, the article I read said he met with them only. No mention of working out. I wouldn’t be surprised if he did though.
