Tico starting tomorrow vs. Missouri

It seems like a desperate attempt to host to try to appease to fans, and feels like a less serious move long term to win a natty.

Oak feels like he’s trying to play things safe, like the new kid trying to be cool.

After the UCLA loss he said, “I’m pi$$ed!” But after a sweep against Tennessee he says, “welllll…. The sec is tough..” he’s been a bit of a joke when it comes to wanting to look cool. Job feels too big for him.

Had we been able to get a double bye, I’d say let’s try and win the damn thing.
Starting Tico gives him another days rest, maybe two depending on who we draw as a 4 seed.
I don’t want to burn thru a bunch of pitching before hosting a Regional though.
Next week is a heck of a lot more important than this week.

Speaking of Kev (catchers), does Serna for Missouri have any eligibility left after this year? If so, grab him after the game and get that portal commitment. I want that guy on my team.

Funny you mention him, I was thinking the same thing. We will probably lose our #1 prep backstop to the draft

Is Mershon expected to be a college catcher? Is he a bust at this point or is there just too much experience in front of him as a freshman?

This is a head scratcher. I guess get him an extra day of rest before regional play, but it feels like this was the perfect time to start Sweeney/Billingsly/Pitzer and hold Tico for the Georgia game
It’s not really a head scratcher. It’s not like pitchers are all cards in your hand, and you pick which one you’re going to play based on what just happened. Game 4 or 5 of a regional….sure….you have to improvise based on what’s available. But that’s not where we are at.

Starting pitchers have routines they have to follow from 3-4 days out in order to get ready to pitch. This decision was made before we ever got to Hoover, and definitely way before the result of the OM / Missouri game was known.

This tells me he's doing everythign he can to secure a host, and gives zero 17's about actually winning this tournament. Which I'm fine with.
Exactly. Why take any chances. I don’t think we necessarily need to win another game to host but I dont think a loss to a team like Missouri helps. It’s been nearly a week since its last start. He should be fine from a rest standpoint and his next start will come late next week.

I’ve heard O’Conner reference several times in his interviews that in tournament settings he prioritizes winning the game at hand and not planning too far ahead. So you guys might want to prepare yourself for the possibility of Tico against a 4 seed in the regional.

I'm of the mind that "it depends on who the 4 seed is". If it's Air Force and Paul Skenes is their ace, then absolutely throw your ace and figure it out later

We could slide some by losing to Mizzou. Right now we are playing #5 in the supers. We need to stay where we are. Play Tico. Beat Big Mo, then turn to Georgia and beat their a*s.

Eh... I was somewhat surprised when I saw the announcement, but if he's on a strict pitch count(ie 75-85 pitches) probably not a bad call. Get him an extra day of rest before the real postseason begins.

I agree with you on that. I’m not a fan of matching your ace against a super weak 4 seed. I just have a feeling based on the way oak is talking, he may be a start your best guy in game 1 type coach. But I could be wrong on that.

It’s not that set in stone. Any pitcher other than McPherson & Stone could have easily been given the start. Heck we’ve TBA several starting pitchers this year & those aren’t decided until the day before. Not a fan of this decision, but don’t think it really matters much. Just don’t start him vs #4 in the regional.

I don’t see us winning a regional if he starts vs #4.

Maybe. And it is a Yuge MAYBE. BOC is looking at trying to win this thing, therefore using Tico on Wednesday morning for 70-80 pitches (based on how well Chone manages the ABS) and then: Having him available for Sunday afternoon’s Championship Game. 😎😎😎

TBA doesn’t mean the same thing as TBD.

I just checked Virginia's website, and in 2023 and 2024, Virginia hosted, and started a weekend starter against the 4 seed, but not the regular Friday night guy.

Yes, but now our best guy is going out there on a day and a half shorter rest than he's used to. Pitchers are like cards in your hand, you pick which one you're going to play based on the knowledge you have available. Oak is on record being a big matchup guy. Choosing his pitchers based on matchups like L/L and R/R. I believe he picked Tomas expecting it to be OM because they struggle against LHP. He certainly could switch off to Sweeney/Billingsly/Pitzer for Mizzou and save Tico for the Georgia matchup

Necessity could. My guess is he wants to get McPherson another start & he needs another day, but he doesn’t want to hold Tico till Saturday & risk not pitching him. So Tico today & Mcpherson tomorrow. Then somebody Saturday if we get that far.

Don't expect to see him pitching past inning 3 unless he's thrown less than 40 pitches and has a perfect game working.

We will see several other pitchers this morning and they need to throw strikes.

But we really have to HIT THE DAMNBALL!
