A. They are hosting the national championship next weekend not next year.

B. It’s not a rumor. I am friends Barry Parkhill as he told me. Brian O’Connor basically built the UVA baseball program from scratch and won national championship. He left for Mississippi State last year because the athletic department would not fully fund his scholarships. You can have 35 baseball scholarships now. He was told he could have 22 and would have to fun raise for the other 13. When men’s lacrosse went from 11 1/2 scholarship to 48 roster spots, they told Lars he was going to have to raise the money for his scholarships himself. They didn’t even give him the 11 1/2 he had before. He had told people last year that he wasn’t going to renew his contract this year unless there were some major changes. Those changes didn’t calm and he did not take a new contract.

UVA has been successful with swimming because they have a couple of alumni benefactors who have funded the program, and it doesn’t cost very much. Same with tennis. They’re alumni groups in baseball, men’s, and women’s lacrosse, and field hockey, all of which they have been extremely good at over the years, have not stepped up yet.

As far as a subject matter of this board goes, they are going to lowball the new lacrosse coach. Expect multiple players to hit the portal, and this not to end well. Unless, they do the smart thing and Mikey Thompson from Christopher Newport. He’s an alarm in one of the best young coaches in lacrosse. I’ll bet their ego won’t allow them to hire a D3 coach..
a) Oh, whoops! I read that wrong. Corrected me again, thanks. Even worse optics, as the MLax world will descend on Scott Stadium with a ton of eyes and idle time focused on the UVA program this week.

b) This is great insight. As in, only place on the internet right now insight. There are a lot of people asking what happened at UVA with few answers provided so far. I searched a bit before I posted.

For comparison, UNC made a commitment to add almost 200 scholarships this year, taking us from 338 before the House v NCAA settlement to 532 in 2026. At roughly $50K per scholarship that is a $10 Million addition to the budget we just have to figure out how to pay for. We are currently operating at a loss, so this is a pretty major commitment.

And even with that massive increase, we are only funding roughly half of the 735 roster spots available on UNC's sports teams. So my guess is that even with this massive increase, sports like MLax at UNC will be slow to fully fund because we have already stated that FB and Baseball will receive full scholarship allotments eating up over 40 of the 100-ish men's scholarships off the top. But I bet MLax did add a few scholarships in year one of the new landscape.

So UNC is likely a leader in this endeavor, but even so MLax will probably take a while to get to fully funded. No inside knowledge, just drawing some conclusions based on logic,

But if UVA pulled some MLax scholarships, that is pretty crazy and indefensible. And yes, those players will surely bolt if their coach felt he should quit and their players had their few partial scholarships pulled.

Lax used to get 11 1/2 scholarships and unlimited roster spots. Now they have 48 roster spots and can theoretically have them all on scholarship. When this changed, they took the 11 1/2 away and told him that he could have as many scholarships as he could raise the money for. There were some negotiation throughout the year, but this might change, but it didn’t. There is also some talk of parents being upset at special treatment given to the Millon brothers. But that is noise.

In the new world UNC has a huge, little talked about advantage. Several years ago, the general assembly passed the law that UNC system schools athletic departments are only billed the in-state rate for all scholarship athletes. Basically we can have about four players from out of state for every one that UVA can have for the same price.

Am I remembering wrong? I’m fairly sure the law actually made it so we had to billing counting out of state athletes as out of state. I feel like I remember that being a conversation with the Ram’s Club having to eat an extra mil or two in costs.

No. Out of state athletes in the UNC system are billed as in-state tuition. Is a huge advantage, particularly in non-revenue sports.

I’m friends with a women’s coach from another D1 school, and when I asked her why Carolina was so much better than everybody else, she said two things – Jenny, and the fact that they only have to pay in state tuition rates.

why would they pass a law to keep things the status quo?

I somehow missed that this was reinstated around ~2020. I was correct that this waiver was originally removed in 2010.

UVa should pursue Quin Busczek (sp?) from Cornell. And if they don’t, UNC should when Breschi’s contract is up. Guy is a stud coach. And I believe has some sort of distant UNC connection… uncle may have played here or something like that? Might have that wrong…

Well, I would suggest we bring him in as a coach in waiting, but I doubt he would want to do that or find a place for him on our current staff.
