OT: Hawk Baseball finishes strong in Des Moines; I went to Thursday's game and it was great; Alivo can sling it

The hawks have some really good players, Purdue hit the ball well and got off to a 6-2 lead after 4 innings but Kyle Alivo of Iowa came in and shut them down over the last 5 innings allowing only 1 run and not many baserunners.

Alivo had fastballs at 95-96, and offspeed pitches with a lot of movement at 86 (probably a slider) and low 80s (changeup?). He had the batters off balance.

Alivo just a redshirt frosh, wow.

Hawk defenders made some great plays and Nerat capped off the offense with a grand slam iirc.

Hawks finished the sweep the next two games and had a reasonable .500 Big 10 record on sort of a rebuilding year I read

Great call/post! Heller doing a great job.

What I seemed to notice this year is a lack of a dominant #1 starter. Against the top teams, the hawks seemed to really struggle in game one and then go toe to toe pretty well in games 2 and 3 (ucla aside!). But I think if they can keep the staff together and not lose anyone in the portal, next year could be better.

Iowa plays Illinois on BTN at 1PM in the first game of the B1G Tournament today.

The first 2 rounds are double elimination, so if they lose they’re still in. But if the Hawks want any chance at making the NCAA tournament they will have to win their first 3 games in the B1G tournament. Realistically they will probably have to win the tournament outright or at least make the final to have postseason hopes.

I don't follow CBB super close - are there other post season tourney opportunities aside from main college world series tourney? Seems like this team is hitting a stride and would be great to get some post season game reps, even if they don't make the NCAA tourney.

The tournament is 64 teams. It starts as 16 separate regionals, which are basically 4 team double elimination tournaments. Then the 16 regional winners go to super regionals, where 2 regional winners play a 3 game series. The 8 super regional winners go to Omaha to play in the college World Series.

Unfortunately there’s no NIT or anything like that. Good (and bad) news is that Iowa is on #1 UCLA’s side of the bracket in the B1G. They probably have to reach them in the Semis and beat them to make the postseason.

MSU at 5PM on BTN.

Hawks have soared from 75 to 55 in the RPI rankings after this 4 game win streak. Need at least 10 more spots to make the tournament, probably 15. A win tonight and on Friday against USC might be just enough.

I had ruled out any shot for making the NCAA tourny without taking the BIG tourny.
If they win today and get to Friday vs USC....woo hoo...got a chance!

Offense is cooking...keep it going!

Asking a closer to go 6 innings (I think) isn't always the best idea. 2 plunks in the top of the 9th to give MSU lead 4-3.
