We had a sneaky tough draw with WCC champion St. Mary's as the 3 seed in Eugene. St. Mary's hit a 2-run homer in the first to take a 2-0 lead, but were shut out the rest of the way. State put together a couple of runs and had a good chance to win it in the bottom of the 7th but couldn't push the run across. In the bottom of the 8th, with a runner on first and two outs, we hit a fly ball that got under a chasing right fielder and the runner scored from first to win 3-2.
We face the host Oregon at 4 CT today. We actually match up well with the Ducks. They are 41-12 but they lost 10-5 to Auburn, who did not even make the tournament. The B1G is very top heavy, and Oregon beat up on the lower half of the conference all year, but they did take 2 of 3 from UCLA before losing the B1G tournament opener 11-9 to Wisconsin, who I think is a lot like State.
Oregon is likely to go with Grein in the circle. She is 23-6 with a 2.68 ERA. Oregon does not have another pitcher with a sub 4.00 ERA. The highest ERA on our team is 2.65. If we pitch well today, Oregon is a team we can score some runs on. The aforementioned Auburn club that was 4-20 in the SEC and lost 25-0 to LSU scored 10 on them, and only did that against one SEC team.
