Two new state records have already been set in this young track & field season.

On March 20 at the UNK Indoor Invite, Chayden Hoffmaster of Cozad recorded a long jump of 24' 5.5" to break the Class B state record of 23' 8.25" set by Tyler Wullenwaber of Centennial in 2009.

On March 24 at the Southern Valley Invite, Brock Bailey of Dundy County-Stratton set a new Class D state record in the shot put with a throw of 63' 4.25", breaking the old mark of 63' 1.25" set by Steve Kriewald of North Loup-Scotia in 2000.

Looks like a couple records fell on 3/31. Fujan of Bishop Neumann ran a 13.98 in the 110m HH, which is faster than Brandt who holds the Class B record at 14.02. He also ran a 21.52 in the 200.

I don't believe those marks were wind legal....it was a little gusty yesterday. Nor am I sure wind measurements were taken. But those marks are impressive.

A third state record was also set today

Chase County is in Class C this year and not Class B, so Noah Rau's mark from last year (203' 9") is still the Class B record.

His throw this year of 205' 7" is a new All-Class record and now breaks the Class C record of 196' 11" set by Derric Werner of Elkhorn Valley in 2002.

The NFHS conversion factor for hand-held times in distance races is to round up to the next tenth of a second and then add 0.24 seconds.

So Arens' 5:02.0 in the 1,600 would become 5:02.1 + 0.24 = 5:02.34

Her 3,200 time of 10:51.0 would become 10:51.1 + 0.24 = 10:51.34

Both times are new Class C state records, breaking the old marks of 5:05.25 set by Rylee Rice of Ainsworth in 2017 and 10:59.05 set by Tamala Resh of Shelton in 1983.

A total of four state records were set on Thursday, April 16

- Avery Arens of Crofton ran in the Titan Classic 1600 meter race in Omaha, finishing as runner-up (to an 8th grader from Harrisburg, South Dakota). She clocked a 4:56.18 to lower her Class C record of ~ 5:00.00 set last week (and breaks the old Class C record held by Ainsworth's Rylee Rice of 5:05.25)

- Jaiya Patillo of Bellevue West broke her own Class A and All-Class state record in the 400 meter dash at the Kruger/May Invite in Elkhorn with a time of 54.41, breaking her old mark of 54.66 she ran in 2024.

- Noah Rau of Chase County lowered his Class C and All-Class state record in the discus with a toss of 207' 3" in Sutherland today, breaking his old record of 205-07

- And Kearney Catholic's Alyssa Onnen goes 13' 4.25" in the pole vault to break the All-Class and Class C state record. It breaks her own Class C record of 13' 0.25" set in 2025 and breaks the All-Class record of 13' 4" set by Jaidyn Garrett of Columbus in 2019

Beau Fujan of Wahoo Neumann with a new Class C state record of 13.86 in the 110 HH, breaking the old record of 14.01 set by Jaxon Knisley of North Platte St. Patrick's in 2024.

Fujan also broke the Class C state record in the 200 meters with a time of 21.60, breaking the old mark of 21.78 set by Cole Biodrowski of Fort Calhoun in 2001.

Aubrey Fujan of Wahoo Neumann clocks a 14.28 in the 100 HH breaking her own Class C state record of 14.45 from 2025.

Mia Cushing of Elkhorn sets a new Class B state record in the 100 meters with a time of 11.92, breaking the record of 11.94 set by Katy Jay of Mitchell in 1999.

Addie West of Omaha Skutt runs a 55.81 in the 400 for a new Class B record, breaking the record of 55.95 set by Sydney Stodden of Elkhorn North in 2024.

At the Drake Relays today, Crofton freshman Avery Arens placed fourth in the Mile with a time of 4:54.84.

The mile is just a little longer than the 1,600 (by almost 10 meters).

Her time would theoretically convert to a 1,600 time of 4:53.13, which would be faster than the 4:56.18 she at the Titan Classic.

Noah Rau of Chase County obliterated his Class C and All-Class State record in the discus today. He threw 219' 6" today to shatter his mark of 207' 3" he set on April 16. He now ranks second nationally in the discus.

It is amazing to me the number of records that have been set in the past 5 years. I have no idea why this is happening but nonetheless it is remarkable.

I’m pretty blown away by it as well. Kids and coaches today have access to better training with YouTube, online forums, training seminars, etc. Also carbon plated spikes and better track surfaces. Lots of other variables as well, but the main one being better training nowadays.

All of this.

And you have a group of athletes that now almost focus solely on track year round, that makes a difference as well.
