Given our Budget situation, we have no choice but to try to get players like this and hope Shaheen can get the player to max his potential. If you’re upset we can’t get better players who bring rankings; we can’t afford them. Otherwise we’d still have Hines.

The situation is what it is for us.
Just not sure how accurate that is - could have afforded Hines (and Clark) it seems, if they wanted to return (and neither may have wanted to be here). Would have just been a different type of roster build with less $$ to spread around on depth.

If you are reading these boards you “embrace it”. Again though “”embracing” doesn’t mean we have to overstate every get or make silly comparisons or projections.
I do embrace it. That’s why I said embrace it.

Exactly. Coach Holloway and his staff will hit on some and miss on others. If I said it once, I’ll say it again…until the NCAA gets some control over this “Pay for Play” disguised as NIL, the only formula that Seton Hall can implement is to identify hidden talent and players with undervalued skills. The coaching staff has to then coach them up and have it all mesh together. This is no easy task for any staff. Sad thing is the team and the entire Pirate Nation will experience the same turnover and task every year. It’s frustrating on all levels. Year to year, until something changes, our roster will be comprised of a blend of complimentary roles players from other Power 5 Conference programs and lower level starters. I have no doubt that Coach Holloway knows what he wants in his players and will get the absolute most out of them…get the players to buy into his process, play hard and unselfish basketball and let the results take care of themselves.

Hines ended up at UConn. We lose that battle 8 or 9 out of 10 times NIL or not.

Agreed. But I'm not sure it was entirely about $$. Based on the accounts here, we could have paid both. Bud Boomer has been railing on this for years now. It is a roster allocation strategy issue, not a pure money issue.

Now if neither Hines nor Clark wanted to be here, that's another story. Seems at least one of them didn't want to be. Maybe both.

Sure we could afford both if we’re playing 2 on 2.

The money available to players is bizarre.

But we never---or very rarely----- got kids who could go to Kentucky or Duke..... or Villanova in the day before NIL.

The bigger issue for SHU is the immediate transfer rule. A school like ours loses big time because of annual free agency.

The money issue was always there, but the order of magnitude has made the difference worse.

If they got the rumored money they wanted I think without question they made the right decision. Now they need to manage this nest egg.

It was the money, in both cases. Quite a bit more, in one case.

Outside of the Whitehead year, our HS recruiting has been really bad since Amaker left. The portal can be a real weapon with great scouting. The key is holding onto the players we want to keep at a reasonable cost. I was a huge Budd & Hines fan all year long but the $ they supposedly received makes no sense based on our current resources.

Sounds like a description of a high school kid still on the JV squad.
Hope he does well, but hard to get excited about a 2.2 ppg kid.
"the makings of a varsity athlete" is a famous line from the Sopranos. It was posted in jest.
