Genuine question to the new members: why do yall like this more than Reddit? Discord and Slack also are free.

Just curious. I’ll hang up and listen.

I don't do Discord or Slack. Never even heard of Slack.

I'm on Reddit, but not very active. At least not as active as I used to be. Never been a big fan of the way comments are displayed on there though. With that said, I've been posting on Rivals (and now On3) since I was in high school on the Iowa Preps site. So this format just feels like home.

Forums like this are a relic of the internet of the past and I love them for still being around.

My rec soccer team uses slack and my lab uses discord. I don’t Reddit but it’s just the first thing that came to mind.

Not part of the most recent horde of illegals, but I did migrate over here a little while ago, so I'll opine ...

I'm not very familiar with those set ups. It's a lot of work for me to get used to how a new "exchange" works ... and I just come here to blow off steam/fill time when bored and leave. It's what I'm used to, so I maximize the time I use toward writing/reading.

I've used Reddit a little to gather information about things (helping the kid gather info on colleges, from the applicant/student perspective, for example) ... but the discussion format seems very cold and weird. It seems better for just throwing an anonymous snarky comment and running, rather than "discussing" anything. But that may be entirely the result of me not putting any work into learning the system.

Don't know anything about Discord, other than the people who usually mention Discord aren't the kind of people I'd want to follow to Discord. Seems like a young cybernerd haven, meant for my kids, not me ... but could be entirely wrong about that. I never heard of Slack.

Yeah I used to have a very poor opinion of discord, but most of my colleagues are from china, and it’s easier for all of us in the lab to use discord than it is for me to use WeChat.

I’m sure there is some difference between Slack and Discord but they are functionally the same from my experience. If you already have a good group of people for a critical mass, then they can make sense in general. But I have no idea how people would stumble upon a discord or slack group if they weren’t already in the group in real life

It’s this sport where people can’t decide whether they’re more into long distance running or sprinting. Oh and you get performance bonuses for really, really good acting. Sometimes good acting is penalized if the robots ever are involved.

Allegedly there are these things called goals, but soccer is more of an adhd girlie than a type A girl boss

questions??

I'm a traditional right back, but training my son to be a more modern wing back. I coached both of my daughters teams as well as my son for his first four years...now he plays club soccer.

When Hawkfan_08 gets here, I'm sure he'll fire up our US Soccer Thread. 💪

I basically like all the positions except center mid. In hindsight it’s probably because I have anxiety lolol

I think my ideal position is LB or RB, but my rec soccer team is heavy on defensive players so I typically play left or right wing. Lately I’ve gotten to play some striker and I wish I would have played that more growing up.

My favorite player was Drogba so I don’t know why it took me so long to play striker.

Sometimes we just stick with what we're comfortable with. My issue growing up was two-fold.

1. My left foot must have been surgically attached from another person...I can't shoot with it.
2. I was SUPER fast, but missed my shots way too often (like #88 from the movie Necessary Roughness)

...so basically I just got thrown on defense and then used by coaches for sprint drills to make their strikers faster. lol

Not very impressive humble brag - my kid was on Iowa's travel club soccer team that "won" the Big 10 over all the other schools that don't have scholarship men's teams. :p

He was offered D2 scholarships but wanted a Big 10 school experience - wasn't quite good enough for a D1 schollie.

He's assitant coaching with one of the Iowa high school power schools now.

I used to not like the sport - but once you understand it and get how actually physical it is - it's fantastic, IMO

Dude, that's awesome! Ya, it's a great sport. We're season ticket holders for San Antonio FC--tons of fun.

p.s. no humble brag. My son likely won't play at the collegiate level. He's a dependable player, but not great. He enjoys it and puts in the work, that's all a dad can ask. He does want to be a Marching Chief, though.

I made the mistake of going to an elite soccer camp one summer in high school. I assumed it would be like the summer camps I was used to at local high schools or universities, and am just a very average player for context.

But it turned out that the elite soccer “camp” was essentially just a way for college coaches to recruit and so I was orders of magnitude worse than everyone else. It was miserable lmao. But I turned out ok I guess.

It blows my mind how good the world class players are, they make everything look so easy.

They play on an entirely different level. In my experience in South Texas, the Delta between rec and competitive is growing. It makes me sad. This may be my son's last season (he's U14).

My kid is more relentless/driven/psycho than super skilled - although he is a fantastic passer/playmaker. He lead every team he was on in yellow cards. Literally stopped a dude's boot in front of the goal with his nose once and broke it. Not sure where he gets the saltiness 😉

He definitely got Mrs. Torbee's athleticism - I was a barely middling high school tennis player, but she was good at track and girl's basketball.

My biggest critique of soccer in the US is how expensive it is for most leagues/teams. I don’t have kids, but my friends with kids have told me horror stories about all the various things they have to buy *each season*

for context I’m in NC now

The important question is whether your son got his dishwasher packing skills from you or his mother

To stay in shape, the kid joined an all-Mexican rec league team here that one of his fellow assistant high school coach plays on. Those dudes DO NOT f.uck around in terms of physicality. He came back from game one bruised as hell - and he said they were easier on him since "I was the only white boy" :ROFLMAO:

He is learning about "old man strength" the hard way.

Physical? Soccer players flop worse than LeBron and the whole Thunder team combined.
