According to ESPN's Pete Thamel.
If a coach decides he wants a new challenge elsewhere, probably not.. But at least Iowa is showing Ben that they're behind him 100%, and it also seems like Ben wants to be at Iowa, so it's probably about as good of a situation as you could ever hope for.The way things are now, does that mean much?
Just hope the buyout helps Iowa if he does decide to go.If a coach decides he wants a new challenge elsewhere, probably not.. Yeah. Most any other coach I’d be worried but with McCollum just don’t get those vibes even with UNC rumors was never worried he’d leave. Seems like something out of the ordinary or drastic would have to happen to have him leave us for another job.If a coach decides he wants a new challenge elsewhere, probably not.. I think he is here at minimum a decade and it's going to be a very fun and successful time for us. As Iowa fans with decades of suffering we absolutely deserve this!Yeah. last time I was worried about Iowa b-ball coach leaving for another job is after Alfords first year when Bob knight got canned the following Sept. if only we had been so lucky….
Yeah, and it sounds like Ben turned down the opportunity to even interview with UNC. Tells me a lot about how Ben feels about the Iowa job.Yeah. Ben is a home run hire the Elite 8 cements it.Yeah, and it sounds like Ben turned down the opportunity to even interview with UNC. Tells me a lot about how Ben feels about the Iowa job.
Same regarding Alford. At the time, it seemed like Alford was a home run hire, so was glad when he had that presser saying he was committed at Iowa. But as it turns out, it wouldn't have been a big loss if he had left.
It's funny, because Ben also seems like a home run hire after just a year, just like Alford. So you can draw a parallel there, but I still firmly believe the difference can be seen in their coaching resumes. Ben won something like 12 conference titles in 13 years, and we all know about the DII natties. Alford never really had that kind of sustained success at SWMS.
The fact he is from Iowa and grew up a fan is a huge reason I think he will stay here for the long term. Beth hit a grand slam here.BMac stayed at NW Missouri for, what, 14 seasons? With all his success there you know he had to have a lot of offers. And, the one he finally took was in Iowa.
I hope he stays a long time. I like him ... a lot.
I would add to all the appropriate comments made here about finally hiring the right coach who fits Iowa. Ben will not only build a highly competitive program. He will also steer things in the right direction as the NIL/portal situation continues to evolve.
More young athletes I think will start figuring things out especially if the economy starts to deteriorate that it makes sense to not focus so much on the money and the bling. Ben seeks out players not in it for just the money who wants to develop as players and participate in a winning culture. His culture will resonate and pay increasing dividends over time.

It doesn't matter to me how you react to what I wrote. I just don't think you can presume that these NIL payments will stay so big moving forward. We may have some much tougher economic circumstances ahead which may limit how much individuals or corporations give. And these athletes will always get paid so some may start to focus more on basketball and developing as players especially if these salaries start to wind down a bit.
The way things are now, does that mean much?
