Easy to justify that when you win 30+ games, win your conference regular season/ conference tourney, and are in the hunt for a FF and National Championship!

It’s when you spend that much, and have zero star power, lose 12-14+ games, play on Wednesday of your conference tournament, and are a half court prayer away from losing in the first round of the NCAAT, that it becomes a major problem.

No truer words, they just released the top preseason 40 teams yesterday, eight SEC teams, no UK. Pope in his interview appears absolutely oblivious to the real problems with the program.

I was thinking the same thing. He acted like everything is right on track for a great run next year. I hope that he has this super power to put a positive spin on things. Otherwise he is oblivious as to how down this fan base is and how week this roster is. I like the guy and I think he could do really well if he could land NBA lottery type players. He has proven that he can't. He blew off the fact that he got 14 of the top 20 players on campus and landed none of them, by saying "I wish I could have gotten all 20 on campus." Hell, that would have just made him 0 for 20.

UT’s desperate to finally end that “zero final fours” stigma …especially after repeatedly coming so agonizingly close in recent years.
Unfortunately, going to push them over, IMO

Money is not going to be a problem for any school if they want a certain player bad enough. This is why NIL screwed everything up, it gets worse everyday. Now you have football schools willing to pay more for players than some basketball powers. It’s a whole new world and money and greed rules the college sports scene even more than it did before.

I have avoided using the internet to express my concerns over the state of UK basketball but my concerns are there for sure.
The problem with the internet is all the lies and falsehoods being published everyday no matter the subject. You really do not know what is true and what is not.

If all these $$$ figures being reported are true, I do not see a sustainable future for college sports with this as their model. Just do not see it.
I know there are many who post on here who know and understand financial accountability. Spending this kind of money for the return on what is being spent will not hold up.
You figure all these teams spending upwards to 30 million and not win a title, boosters will find other avenues to support their schools. At some point I see a fight on the horizon with government and quite frankly, the public coming.

You see all these politicians posting 'free college education" and then having schools starting to cut programs because of all this NIL money needed to buy a team now, it is only a matter of time before s**t hits the fan.
You can disagree with me all you want and that is OK, but the fan base of college sports is dying as much as it is growing. Younger fans do not mind all this NIL and buying a new team every year but coaches hate it and older fans are being turned off by all this.

I read more and more where fans are not watching games like they used to. It seemed it was a sin to miss a game but today, people are finding other things to do with their time.

One could say us older fans not watching these days while younger fans being OK with all this will even itself out, well this is where I disagree. Most younger fans do not spend the money to travel the way older fans travel nor do they give to the school the way older fans give.

I cut back on what I donate and buy when it comes to UK due to the Sharpe situation a few years ago and then this year with JQ.
My wife just bought me a whiskey bottle for the 1978 Championship team that cost over $1500. I had looked at buying one for a long time but did not want to spend that on a bottle anymore because I just feel all my UK stuff will mean nothing in a few years to a younger generation. I was thinking about buying another gun for my collection instead.

The sad part of all this is, most of the players getting millions in NIL will never make a dime in the NBA. So we are basically paying all this money to watch kids play college sports.

We are going thru a phase in college sports right now that is just not sustainable financially. Just not. The return has to be greater than the investment or the smart money will dry up.

It was nothing for me to spend over a $1000 to get two tickets for a game in lower level to watch a game a couple times a year with my grandkids. Not anymore. It is just not the fun it once was.

I wonder how many who post on here bashing Coach Pope were cheering him in Rupp when he was hired. He is the same guy who was cheered for his passion while wearing that UK jersey when he was hired now call him weird.

Just saying.

Already starting to see some schools cutting smaller programs to feed CFB, CBB, etc., I feel absolutely the same way, I don’t care nowhere near as much as I once did, the nostalgia is dead.

On this same page, players were quoted as saying they wanted to play for Barnes because he is an “Alpha.”

Rick barnes, Bill Self is about to retire thats why they got some of their players. Last year we spent a lot and didn't do well. Guess who else spent a lot Indiana, Louisville, BYU, and how far did they make it? We were ranked number 2 in transfer portal rankings last year. How did that pan out? Michigan did well. The reason we didn't pan out is partially due to injuries and partially due to players not panning out. If you get Lowe/JQ playing we could maybe have 8 losses. They overspent on players but in this portal I see alot of overspending on players who come from really crappy teams.

Yes, so when I look at UT's roster, I think - okay, that's what a $20M roster looks like. Now compare that to whatever the hell we had last year...

That is where the frustration is. What a waste of limited booster $
yeah the roster looks good but how is it going to mesh. I bet next year is the year you'll see teams overspending for players and the team doesn't do well. Plus yeah Juke Harris appears to be a good player but he did come from a real bad Wake Forest Team. ACC wasn't that great of a confrence. We have a guy like Wilkins played for a bad conference but actually made the tournament and played some solid teams.

Same. I used to be a die hard. I never missed a UK basketball game. I would even call in to work to stay home and watch the big matchups. I think i watched about 6 or 7 games last year. And probably 4 the year before. The Covid season started my decline. Then add in 5 years or so of Calipari not caring anymore. Now 3 years of Pope.

I spend most of my time now following UK Football, and going to LSC games with my friends. We find that to be more fun, and tickets are dirt cheap.

Recruiting rankings don't mean squat. If they did, Calipari would have 20+ National Titles.

exactly people are going on about how good a certain team is without them playing on the floor. How much you spend don't mean anything either. We seen that last year as did Louisville, Indiana, and Byu. Michigan probably spent a lot but their players weren't injury prone and their were no its my team like times at the beginning of the year when Aberdeen and Oweh did that.

If you donate any amount of money to a multimillion dollar institution you’d be better off to just burn it. You think these places would help you if you got into an emergency situation and needed help? They’d laugh in your face even after all the money you spent giving to them.

A Very Wise post , great take . We just saw a few sometimes play , sometimes dog it , sometimes care , sometimes not , to get paid MILLIONS to play college ball. What a crock , I hope I live long enough to see it all crash and burn .

I can envision myself , a fan of 50 plus years , having very little to zero interest in the Basketball program. Attending games is even further down the line. I'm that over it .... fire Pope , buy some players , might give a wet **** , barely

Really makes me wonder where UK is, I believe Duke is pushing $30M.

Its like I posted numerous times on the old board: UK benefited for years because no other sec school cared about basketball.

That's no longer the case.

If you don't believe me, just go to the sec tournament. It used to be 99.999% blue on the streets. Now its probably 65-70%. Still the majority but not even close to what it was.

You see the league's push reflected in coaching talent too. Now basically every team, besides us, has a big name at the helm. Talent is way up.

So we haven't really been in decline so much as everyone else just got serious about basketball and we haven't adjusted.

Sure. But I can tell you I would 10/10 take their roster over ours.
