Seems like a good place to put this one. Awesome version. After Shannon Hoon died and Blind Melon folded, Rogers went to Law school…now a lawyer in Philly.

As a guitar player myself, this list is absolute garbage.

Also, a forum I participate on that is basically comprised of guitar players, professionals to beginners has widely panned this list. Definitely some of the solos deserve to be on the list, but some for the listed artist isn’t even their best one. Coming from Rolling Stone, this is what their writers came up with, and I bet a lot of them don’t play guitar.

I play as well, complete garbage, BUT I didn't look at it that closely to see how their criteria might have swayed the list (and don't care enough to look at it).

People will always say these lists are "crap" because they don't agree with their personal opinions. I agree there are some solos that are overrated and some that are underrated. The fact that it doesn't include more than 1 jazz solo is criminal, but I get it, nobody listens to jazz anymore.

I was happy to see Phish's Stash and Wilco's Impossible Germany on the list. A few of my favorite rock solos by two of the best rock soloists. Personally, I would put Sultan's higher. Knopfler's use of chord tones in the solo makes it better than most rock solos which just run up and down the same scale.

April 12, 1970, Miles Davis performed Bitches Brew at the Fillmore in SF on an evening when his band was opening for the Grateful Dead. The reaction apparently to a band member of the Dead was how do we follow that? This is just one reason why lists are worthless by and large……. Here is another.…..

Coincidentally i have been playing Bitches Brew as background music at work. A younger person in my office heard it and asked " where has this been all my life".

I have a similar Rolling Stone New York Times list to drop today and am interested in what everyone thinks.....in the meantime, my Dad turned me on to Billy Strings. His kind of 'country/bluegrass adjacent - guess lack of drums makes this more bluegrass...' is my favorite because the songwriting is honest and earnest and reminds me of where I grew up in Western PA. He gets to work on the solo at around 4:00 or so, but the whole thing is worth a watch. Kid can play....

I preface this by saying that my musical talents is limited to dropping a CD into my stereo and my education is just exploring. That being said, one of my favorite guitarists is BB King. I've always preferred rougher blues acts like early John Lee Hooker, Hound Dog Taylor ("When I die, they'll say 'He couldn't play ****, but he sure made it sound good'"), T-Model Ford, etc. and used to find BB's music a bit too clean. However, when he played at Eisenhower Auditorium back in '97, I camped out overnight for tickets because I at least understood his status. First in line, I got six front row center tickets. Seeing him live was one of those few 'Holy Fu@#%ing Chr!$t' moments I've ever had at a performance. Electrifying. Even with his minimalist style, I believe he once said that "notes are expensive, use them wisely." the music that came out of his guitar was amazing. I believe he was in his seventies at the time, but it was an incredible show. I'm not an autograph seeker, but I asked him to sign my ticket when he shook my hand at the end of the show.

One of my favorite YouTube videos is of him playing at Farm Aid in 1985. He breaks a string in the middle of his solo for How Blue Can You Get and he keeps on singing while he restrings it himself with the band never missing a beat. It starts around the three minute mark.

Always surprised when "Working Man" by Rush gets overlooked. It's a great guitar solo.

Glad to see you are a jazz aficionado. You know what they say about jazz musicians.....best in the world. I play trumpet in a jazz big band in the Atlanta.

I have been listening to:
Thelonious Monk - live in Paris (1967).

Damn good stuff.

Nice! If you have time - Keith Jarrett’s live concert in Cologne I believe is the best selling live jazz album ever. He wasn’t going to perform because the piano they had for him wasn’t tuned properly, but he did and it’s really incredible.

Hey grant did you ever listen to Joe pass at all. He’s in a class by himself. His chord melody playing was incredible. He played guitar like it was a piano and if they would let jazz solos into the list. The list would be all jazz musicians.

Of course. The term virtuoso gets thrown around too easily but not the case for Joe pass. So many great jazz guitarists that nobody knows.

None of Skunk Baxter’s 3 ridiculous solos from My Old School?

No Terry Kath’s insane solo from 25 or 6 to 4?

Hell, I could listen to Joe Walsh’s outro to Walk Away for hours.
