As we know the NCHSAA has sanction more sports for next year. And that’s girls flag football and boys volleyball. Any thoughts on this. Could this pull players from other more important sports. My thoughts we have enough sports going on as it is. Perhaps this could be a good thing.

I don't understand why people are so upset about this and what makes 1 sport more important than another? South Iredell has had men's volleyball for some time now. I'm sure those guys feel their sport is just as important as others.

Just because it's sanctioned doesn't mean schools have to field it.

Pisgah has had a men’s club volleyball for 3, maybe 4 years, and for us this year it pulled from kids that ran track or tennis to stay in shape but not real competitive and maybe a golfer or two and then pulled some that weren’t participating in anything. There is also a “”VolleyBuff” day now that’s kind of the opposite of PowderPuff football, with boys playing volleyball and female volleyball players coaching. It’s a pretty well attended/ hyped event so interest is growing.

As for flag football that sport is going to grow, there’s interest there on the female side and major interest on the male side. Traditional football will be held onto as long as possible because it’s a major moneymaker, but kids/ parents interest is going to cause flag football numbers to increase and traditional football numbers to decrease and that’s just the trend.

I would imagine all school sports essentially got their start from community/ student interest and this doesn’t seem to be any different

Also, during this same session it DID NOT pass by a 7-10 vote to take 1a-7a playoffs from a field size of 48 down to 32. I would have been in favor of 32 for several reasons.

Not to highjack but it came out of the same meeting.

I would have been in favor of down sizes from 48 to 32 as well.

Goldendomer.... what part of the state do you call home? I want to make sure I never go there by accident.

Tell me this is a quote from a CNN article...not your reality.

I’m from Pisgah and we still have great numbers, (per Capita, great numbers)overall but I saw an Owen youth football program a few years ago with 22 kids total, not on a team but the whole program. Erwin’s youth program folded briefly and then came back. When I was a kid Haywood County supported 5 youth programs and now there are 3, with 1 being huge and the other 2 self supporting.

I’m not hoping for this scenario but I’m a nerd brain who enjoys analytics and my casual observations point to what you highlighted in red in the next few decades. Trends can reverse.

I think it's only a matter of time before it happens but would be crazy to expect schools to spend a couple of thousand dollars on something like that right now in the current state of things.
