I know there used to be a bid process for hosting Regionals, but that went away a long time ago. What’s the official selection process now?

Primarily RPI but conference record/champion and quad wins/losses play a role. For example Georgia is 16. But as of now they would be a top 8 seed as sec champ. USC is 9 but is on the hosting bubble bc they are 0-8 against quad 1
Yeah. Seems kind of convoluted and contrived to put so much emphasis on RPI then totally ignore it when you want to.
It’s an acknowledgement that rpi is not perfect. I think UNC had a top 20 rpi one year with a losing record so they had to put a rule in that you have to have a winning record to make the tourney.
Let’s just win them all and then it’ll be a moot point.
RPI isn't perfect, but it is a good tool to measure especially in sports like baseball/softball with 40+ games.
The simple formula for RPI is 50% your winning percentage, 25% your opponent's winning percentage, 25% your opponent's opponent's winning percentage.
This late in the season, a win vs. a top 20 RPI team is worth around 30 RPI points, and as A&M figured out yesterday, a win against a sub-300 team is worth -30 points. Everything else meets in the middle about RPI 125. So our win against Nicholls yesterday was basically neutral. It did not help but did not hurt. Our move up was simply A&M's drop.
A sweep of Auburn this weekend could put us as high as No. 4. Getting swept could drop us to around No. 14. Win 2 of 3 and we could get as high as No. 6, and lose 2 of 3 and we could drop to as low as No. 12.

The 16th lowest conference leader is Campbell, who has an RPI of 66 (higher than a team like Vanderbilt). They would be a 4 seed somewhere. That's a decent team.

3-3 the next 2 weeks and we should be. It's going to be an accomplishment to win 3 of these next 6, hope they can pull that off.
I expect us to win 3. Hope for 4. Boyd projected that 3 wins will keep us in top 8 RPI.
The problem with RPI is you should never be penalized more for winning a game than cancelling a game. In a 55 game season, you should be able to win four or five games against cupcakes without it hurting your RPI. It seems like it'd be easy enough to drop up to 5 wins if your RPI improves by dropping those games.
You fix this by fixing the schedule. Stop scheduling sub-300 teams. Nicholls was 127 and it was RPI-neutral.
That just completely screws smaller programs. Those teams have to have somebody to play. It doesn't make a lot of sense to severely punish somebody for beating the 300th best team instead of the 200th best team. Those should both be cupcakes that don't help your resume when you beat them, but beating them sure as hell shouldn't hurt your resume if you are overall playing a good schedule. Allowing your five best wins to not hurt you would still prevent teams from loading up on cupcakes, but it would get rid of the more or less artificial distinction between beating the really bad teams and beating really really bad teams.
Just thought I'd pass this along, seemed to go with the subject.
And based on what we saw last night, that’s about far as you should go down the list non conference. Drop Lioscomb (3 games) & Alcorn. Replace them with say Mercer (3games) & Arkansas St. we’d be a top 5 RPI team & a pretty solid top 8 seed. It’s not complicated.
So what? We don’t make the rules. But we should schedule smart given the rules as they are.

Excuse me, as a Mississippi State fan, for not looking out for the little guy…
I’m not advocating us being stupid. Just pointing out an easy fix to the stupidest flaw in RPI. Wasn’t trying to imply that MSU was in a position to change it.
Based soley when it hurts us and never when it helps us.

We need to win 2 this weekend. We’ve got way too many home losses already. It cant be much more clear than that. Home losses hurt you more than home wins help. You have to win your home games.
