If Tavion Banks returns in 2026-27, we would have 0 Open Roster Spots (14 players are officially signed)

AND yet again, he said, "if he gets another year, he wants to be a Hawkeye". So basically the issue is whether or not Ben wants to keep a spot open for him in the event he gets the 5th year.

But what if we get our guard and our center by the beginning of next week? We would then have one spot left. Another guard comes up that Ben would really like, but Tavion's situation has not yet been adjudicated.

Ben could choose to "roll the dice" and pass on the guard, leaving a spot for Tavion.

Ben could choose to take the available guard, leaving no spot for Tavion.

Tavion is looking out for his own best interests by entering the portal. It presents another option for him if he is declared eligible and the spot at Iowa is gone.

Interpreting the line of reasoning you seem to be expressing in your statements, you either think Tavion is lying about wanting to be a Hawkeye, or he has no logical reason for taking the action he has taken. Am I correct, or do you think something else is going on?

April 18, 2026 Update:

Ty'Reek Coleman committed yesterday; Andrew McKeever committed today.

6'7 G/F Tavion Banks (SR)
6'4 G Kael Combs (SR)
6'8 F Cam Manyawu (SR)

6'5 G Isaia Howard (JR)
6'2 G Jacob Koch (JR)
7'3 C Andrew McKeever (JR)

6'7 G Tate Sage (SO)
6'8 F Cooper Koch (RS SO)
6'9 F Joey Matteoni (RS SO)
6'11 C Trevin Jirak (SO)

It's easy to forget about the 10 guys pictured below, but they are all officially signed for next season.

Some were thinking Joey Matteoni and/or Jacob Koch might not be back; they are both returning.

6'7 G/F Tavion Banks (SR) -- status to be determined.

The other 4 signed:
7'3 C..........Andrew McKeever (JR)
6'2 G.........Ty'Reek Coleman (SO)
6'8 PF......Ethan Harris (FR)
6'7 SF......Jaidyn Coon (FR)

If it meant we could get another guard, I wouldn't mind if Tavion moved on.

Speaking of guards....

full text of tweet:

Portal guards left on the board who Iowa has had confirmed interest in:

Isaac Bruns | South Dakota

• 20 ppg, 39% from deep, 84% ft shooter
*missed last two months of season from a foot injury*

Jeremiah Johnson | Campbell

• 15 ppg, 37% from deep, 3.5 rpg
*taking confirmed visits to major programs, Iowa not listed, yet*

Tylen Riley | Tulsa
• 15ppg, 4apg, 4rpg, 39% from deep
*Marquette in drivers seat, has taken visits this past week, Iowa not one of them*

Feel out of the picture on Johnson and Riley. Bruns front has been quiet across the board, and seems like the only one currently in play.

Really hoping we can get Riley. We need another guard imo.

No, I never said he was lying. I would have thought he'd tell Bden he'd interest from the league, which I don't see him getting drafted, or he'd be back should he get the 5th year. Not just enter the portal.

Seems like there are at least 2 ways for Tavion to get another year at IOWA:

(1) Win his pending appeal (if he doesn't, he could sue).

(2) If this 5 year thing passes, he could sue to make it retroactive.

Could Ben park his son for a season to make room for Banks if he signs another player? Not be on the team for a season.

There’s no reason for that to happen. You should try to educate yourself on how to treat human beings and team members.
The reason would be to have as much talent as possible on the team.

I'm as much for the student-athlete and culture, as anybody. But even if you have to cut Peyton loose for good, that's pretty much the name of the game, these days.

Peyton would have other opportunities. He already leveled up an opportunity, as it was. Wouldn't rule out that that's what he'd want for Dad, anyway

That sends a totally wrong message to everyone if Ben cuts a player at this point, especially his son. Why would anyone believe Ben in the future if he cuts his son at this point in the process. If he has zero loyalty to his son, he will have even less to other people. We are beyond the cutting point and that's why there's still an open spot left. It's for one person to fill at the end. My guess is they're waiting on Banks and if that doesn't happen then he'll grab someone who's still looking for a home.

Peyton would be screwed and you're an idiot for thinking that Peyton would be happy for his Dad. If Ben were to have talks with Peyton during or right after the season, that's one thing, to do it now would ruin their relationship.

You really don't understand people very well. I guess that's why you tend to fight with other posters and actually think Peyton would be happy for his Dad to cut him.

I suppose Peyton could become a team manager for a year...or 2...or 3...
I don’t think that would happen. If Peyton was dropped from the roster, he’d have to end all team activities. The NCAA isn’t going to let teams skirt the 15-player roster limit by making guys “managers” for a year or two. And we all know the extra scrutiny the NCAA has for the University of Iowa.

Peyton would also lose years of eligibility under a plan like this since he’s already used his redshirt year.

That said, on the whole, I have no problem with the concept on creaning players if you need to. If players are going to have the ability to jump from team to team without penalty, teams need to have the ability to drop guys from the roster who are not able to contribute in a meaningful way. However, you do have to be mindful of how that can impact team culture, and not every coach is going to want to take the same approach.

Also, I’m not convinced that Peyton McCollum won’t be a contributor some day. It’s not like we don’t have a coach with a track record of taking lightly recruited point guards and turning them into NBA draft picks. While I know we all have PTSD from previous situations with coaches’ kids, I think we’d be unwise to sleep on Peyton McCollum. At least for now.

Hope is maybe McCollum can contribute as an upper classman. I never thought Sam Hoiberg would add as much as he did last 2 years for Fred.

but I don’t get why conversation is about him. If anyone should be creaned it should be Jacob Koch. Nothing I’ve seen tells me he will ever seeing meaningful minutes and he was a walk on from the previous coach. If he stays for next year so be it but if McCollum needs spot next cycle then Koch should go route of last guys like stokes, till, ash and kingsbury and go see the floor at some mid major. Unfortunately the days of having the gray squad with multiple walk ons minus one or 2 preferred are a thing of the past.

Lots of interesting updates from the Register beat writer:

Ben McCollum's plan for final touches of 2026-27 Iowa basketball roster

Portrait of Tyler Tachman Tyler Tachman
Des Moines Register
May 5, 2026, 6:02 a.m. CT

IOWA CITY — 14 of Iowa basketball’s 15 roster spots for the 2026-27 season are accounted for.

The Hawkeyes are returning 10 players from last season’s Elite Eight roster while also adding four newcomers — two from the transfer portal and two incoming freshmen.

That leaves one opening still available.

Iowa coach Ben McCollum said during a May 4 interview with the Des Moines Register that he has no further clarity on Tavion Banks’ situation.

Banks played four seasons of college basketball and went through senior-day festivities at Iowa. But because two of those seasons came at the junior-college level, the door isn't closed on the possibility of him being granted more NCAA eligibility.

Banks, Iowa’s leading rebounder and second-leading scorer last season, announced in April that he was declaring for the 2026 NBA Draft and entering the transfer portal, but stated, "If a fifth year (of college eligibility) becomes an option, I want to be a Hawkeye!"

With Iowa operating as if Banks won’t be able to return to the Hawkeyes, that gave both parties maximum flexibility.

“That’s why he went into the portal,” McCollum said. “And that’s probably the same thing with Iowa State and Milan (Momcilovic). It’s like, you can’t sit there and wait and save that much NIL money that he would command. So you have to operate (as if he isn’t coming back). And then if it happens sooner — so, for instance, if that fifth-year rule had come through — now you might have some NIL (money), and you have a spot. But if you don’t have that, then you have to make sure you look out for the best interest of the kid. And so, that was our theory. We have to make sure we look out for Tavion, too.”

McCollum outlined another potential scenario that explains the benefit of Banks entering the transfer portal. If Banks couldn't get another season of eligibility granted by the court system in Iowa, it's possible he could try to do so in another state, which would allow him to play for a college program located in that state.

McCollum said he does not know when Banks' complex situation could be resolved.

With that in mind, Iowa is still looking to add to its 2026-27 roster.

“Passively,” McCollum said. “We are. We’re looking for a real specific thing, so you’re not just sitting in there in the weeds the whole day.”

When asked for specifics, McCollum answered: “The only thing we’d take is another guard.”

Iowa is bringing back Kael Combs, who started the final 33 games alongside star senior Bennett Stirtz last season. The Hawkeyes’ backcourt returners also include Tate Sage, Isaia Howard and Peyton McCollum. Iowa is adding Illinois State transfer Ty’Reek Coleman to the group. The 6-foot-2 guard averaged 10 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists while shooting 50.4% from the field and 41.6% from deep as a true freshman.

If Iowa were to bring in another guard, McCollum did not close the door on that coming via the transfer portal, international, or a high school prospect reclassifying.

When it comes to roster-building for the 2026-27 season, the bulk of the work is done. But it might not be completely over just yet.

And when he takes that next step are we talking about an @EvilMonkeyInTheCloset National Championship???

The main thing I'm hoping to see out of Howard next year is more consistency on his outside shooting. 28% from 3 last year, so even if he gets to 35+% that would help a lot. Heck, Banks greatly improved his outside shot, so why not?

You look at the lack of scoring coming back and it’s pretty alarming. Koch improved a ton as the season went on. I’ve watched enough of Cam at Drake and here to see he’s not going to score. Thompson and Harris are going to have to immediately be able to put the ball in the hoop. Not much firepower coming back.
