A great coach can win with mediocre players. He's been iffy so far with mediocre players. A mediocre coach will struggle with great players, we saw that with the last coach. It's not really about the players, at its core.
Well, we see our rivals and other schools loading up on talent and our coach continues to whiff on everything. It would be one thing if he was being very selective with his recruitment, but he's not. He's casting for catfish but only gets bluegill. And let's be real, this roster doesn't fit "his system".
Precisely. Any coach worth a damn will be more demanding of themselves than the fanbase are. Simply a pathetic attempt to blame shift to those reacting to situation. Not those who created it.

I've seen Pope ridiculed on here for his religion, his looks, his intelligence. He has been called a liar a theif and I have even seen his family insulted. I don't think he is the fit to be coach here but some folks are WAY out of line.

They're two very different things and for some reason a small percentage of fans cant understand that nuance.
He came into the most important offseason of his career without a GM and without a full coaching staff. The strategy has been incoherent and poorly thought-out to say the least. He spent most of the critical portion of the portal season being drug around by Donnie freeman (who has never played a full season in his career) and Rob Wright. He is extremely lucky that Zoom didnt tell him to kick rocks after he kept him on the back burner trying to land Rob.
He barely made an effort to get any of the real studs from the portal. He put all his eggs in the stokes basketball for high school guys when everyone else seemed to know he was always going to Kansas. He flies thousands of miles to Israel to see a 6’8 center score zero points, a guy that averaged 1.6 rebounds per game in the euroleague, and sounds like he’s gonna whiff on him too. He’s tried to get in on guys after they already had schools heavily pursuing them and whiffed, Montgomery to UofL being an example.
He put himself at a disadvantage for no reason, should’ve had a GM scouting guys and building relationships with agents since November, instead he CHOSE to handle it this way and it’s mostly blown up in his face. The only positives are landing Zoom, Wilkins, and a stretch 4 but the lack of help around them will probably mean it’s another wasted season.

Pope is basically committing job abandonment. He has put together a terrible roster for the program’s standards and has no leads on anyone who can change that. He doesn’t even seem to be pursing anyone that can at least fill the roster out.

Is he, really? He wasnt born in KY, didnt originally plan to play at UK. Played 2 years here, was a bench player on the 96 title team. Went to the NBA and then to coach, never stepped back in the state until 2 years ago.
Its quite impressive the leeway he's been given simply for playing 2 years here. I personally think proven coaches, and coaches who have a working system that has delivered results, deserve more runway.. but what do I know.

Lowe sucked ***. He was a ball hog who made questionable decisions and couldn’t shoot. We absolutely wouldn’t have been any better and likely would have been worse towards the end of the year because Aberdeen wouldn’t have blossomed if Lowe was in the way.

Let’s judge this team when it's done. So far, Wilkins and Diallo might actually be better than the guards we had on Pope's first team.
Pope outcoached several coaches that first season. He had to, they had much better talent.
Actually half of us were like “this was an exhibition that meant nothing” after the Purdue game. The receipts are there if you would like to look them up. It’s okay Mrs. Pope, your husband loves the University and we appreciate his time here as a player and he tried. He’s just not cut out for this level of job and never was.
2024/25 wasn’t a good job? You have to be kidding me. That was a great job considering what he started with and the injuries.
Any coach that beats the eventual national champion, wins @ Gonzaga and beats that 24/25 duke team, while setting a record for most quad 1 wins, did a great job, especially when starting in April with no players, or coaches.
It's cool to critisize Pope, he deserves it, but at least be fair.
Yeah I mean I’ll absolutely cop to it. I strongly dislike Pope as a person. If I knew him personally, I’d do my best to avoid him. He is the embodiment of cringe. It’s dishonest not to admit that.
But that being said if he was doing a good job here, I wouldn’t care about his awful personality. It’s like with Cal. When he started losing, his personality flaws started being the focus of attention. They had been there the whole time but nobody cares as long as you’re winning
